Default How long does it take after you start working out to see results?

I just started working out about 8 days ago... I've been doing cardio on the stair stepper for 30 mins. plus arms, lunges and crunches. While I've noticed my butt getting slightly firmer and larger, I haven't seen any other changes that are motivating me to keep going. I know it hasn't been that long and people have said that the bigger you are the quicker you will see initial results, (I'm a size 5 trying to go to size 2/3), so I don't really know what I expect out of it. It's just really unmotivating to look in the mirror and see the same old shape after what feels to me like several days of hard workouts. How long does it usually take to see the first results in like arms or stomach area?

Since it sounds like you don't have much to lose (in terms of dress size) you should notice results in a few weeks. Also, that is dependant upon if the weights you are using are high enough for you (no using 5 lb dumb bells for bicep curls...you won't see results).

Anyways...usually a few weeks before you start seeing anything. Don't get discouraged. Take a pic of what you look like now (front and back in as little clothing as possible) and then take a pic of what you look like in 1-2 weeks and compare them. Chances are, you'll see more results that way. When you are looking at yourself everyday, you pick up subconciously on small changes, so you won't notice much right away. With time-lapsed pics, you will see the changes much more.

Don't get discouraged!!! Keep it up and you'll be where you want to be in no time!!

Oh, and in order to see results in your abs (if you have any fat there) you need cardio and a really well-balanced, low fat diet. Good luck!!!

    Great advice from Venus.

For me, if I cut down on carbs and do cardio everyday, I swear I see results in a week because I lose a ton of water.

Dont do the 5 lbs weights like she said.... do as much weight as you can for 8-12 reps. (I use 20 for my biceps) hehehe
THAT hurts, but you get muscle, and cut up.
    Good luck

When I used to work as a personal trainer I'd tell my customers to wait 3-5 weeks before noticing a difference. You should, if you work out regularly and eat healthy, reach your goal in a couple months. Good lucK!

P.S. Speed up results in the waist area by taking up pilates..everyone I know who's started is now hooked!

Veruca...OMG...I started Pilates 5 years ago because my back was hurting and I was tired of going to the Chiropractor!! I am completely and totally hooked!

Pilates really DOES help tighten up the entire abdominal/lower back areas! Gives you that flat, tight, toned definition that every one craves so much! My only advice with Pilates is that you invest in a Certified Pilates Instructor for the first several weeks/months. It is very form specific and you can actually hurt yourself if you do not do the movements correctly. Once you get the basics down, then you can use just the tapes or whatever. I still go to a Pilates studio...it's kinda pricey, but the best way to get onto those machines!

About a month ago, I decided it was time to slim down/ tone up a little. I literally noticed a difference in 3 weeks. That's a real motivator too. Just walking, doing crunches, weights for my arms, stretching and lots of squats has helped a great deal. But as Lexi said, drink only water (no sodas!) and juices and eat healthy. you sound like you're pretty small to begin with so it shouldn't be long. only 8 days so far? be patient and good luck!

Is it true that you aren't supposed to work out the same body parts everyday? I want to go for it and do a full body workout everyday but I read fitness mags and it says that's bad to do. I don't see how working out a lot could be bad... but is it? Do you girls ever do crunches every day?

I do at least 50 crunches a day. that helps me no matter what the mags say.....every person is different body-wise, so you have to do what you see working for you.

No, you absolutely should NOT do ANY exercise everyday. Your body needs time to rest those muscles and repair them. If you workout (not cardio, but weights) everyday, your chances of sustaining injuries increases tenfold. You will also exhaust your body and find that after weeks of working out, you aren't getting very noticeable results. This is simply your body burning out.

The absolute best way to workout is (I follow this workout plan):

Monday: Cardio for 30 minutes, upper body workout with weights (chest, back, shoulders, biceps, triceps)

    Tuesday: Cardio for 45 minutes

Wednesday: Cardio for 30 minutes, lower body workout with weights (quads, hams, calves, abs)

    Thursday: Cardio for 45 minutes

Friday: Cardio for 30 minutes, upper body workout with weights

    Saturday: Cardio for 45 minutes

    Sunday: Day of rest

Monday: Cardio for 30, lower body workout

    Tuesday: Cardio for 45

Wednesday: Cardio for 30, upper body workout

    Thursday: Cardio for 45

Friday: Cardio for 30, lower body workout

    Saturday: Cardio for 45

    Sunday: Day of rest

Just keep alternating that way. On the days that you do weights, make sure you drink 2 servings of a protein shake. Your body needs lots of protein to help repair the muscles. I also drink Cytovol. It helps "oxygenate" your cells and will help prevent any soreness (from lactic acid buildup)...and drink plenty of water. And, stretch...stretch after your cardio workout and before weights and then again after weights.

Hope that's not confusing...LOL...sorry...if you have any questions, please feel free to PM me!!

    Happy lifting!

Shape magazine says that muscle groups (including your abs) shouldn't be specifically targeted and worked on more then two times a week. I'm sure if you leave a day or two for muscle recovery, exceeding this amount per week might not do too much harm. Remember to warm up and lightly stretch before your work out..then cool down and stretch a bit more heavily after your work out. This helps you avoid injury, work to your full potential during a work out, and gain flexibility (which we know helps improve performance in our profession).

DO NOT work out the same body part everyday!!!

When you do resistance training ( weights) you tear your muscles... during your rest period, your muscles repair and this is when they grow. ( muscles do not get gian size during your work out.. they swell and then they go down) So if you constantly keep working out the same group of musles, day in and day out you will end up breaking them down.

    Seraya.
