Default Vitamin Deficiency or just weird cravings?

I usually don't pay much attention to stuff like this, but a customer of mine witnessed me chomping on my ice (I usually order a glass of ice and chew it) and said that its a sign of your body being low on vitamins. During the same conversation, he had ordered me dinner (a salad with three sliced tomatoes) and said that tomatoes were the same thing, that if you crave ice or tomatoes your body is lacking something.

Any of you heard of that? I guess this is a question for all you diet health gurus.

I chew on ice all the time, I crave it, I also crave tomatoes constantly! I'm talking take a tomato and eat it just like an apple. And ice just pop it like candy.

I heard that chewing ice is a sign of sexual frustration! lol...probably not much truth to that one, though.

Not sure if it's like this in all cases, but while i was pregnant i also craved ice. The dr. said that my body was low on iron. he gave me iron suppliments and i didn't crave ice anymore after about 2 weeks.

Craving ice is a sign of iron deficiency. I never heard that tomatoes meant anything, but that would make sense to me. I am anemic, and anytime my bf asks what I want for dinner, my answer is, "Anything with tomatoes." (or sometimes mushrooms ???)

You might want to have your iron checked. If you need supplements I can tell you which ones are better for not upsetting your stomach. I'm always taking those things.

Yes, The doctor or a local clinic. I am severely anemic and I take a prescribed liquid iron supplement.

I chew ice constantly, but it's a habit for me, I've done it ever since I was young. LOL. I don't bother with ice water, I just want the ice.

I have heard a lot of weird cravings though, that are a sign of vitamin deficiency. A woman I knew who was pregnant actually picked up a hunk of dirt and chowed down on it. She had some kind of mineral deficiency (she wasn't taking her pre-natals). She also craved clay.

I'd definitely get checked out though, to be on the safe side. Generally, chewing ice is a sign. I've never heard of the tomato thing though.

    Good Luck to you.

Weird, my friend, when a child, would pick at the drywall next to her bed and eat it and is severely anemic.
Last time I got my iron checked it was almost too much, yet I frequently find myself craving tomatoes.
Right now I crave nori. hee.

Welp, I went to the doctor this morning because last night at work I became severely light headed on the verge of passing out. He says that I am showing signs of being anemic.. I guess what I'd like to know is how does one become anemic later in life or is it something that can happen off and on throughout adulthood etc... (I forgot to ask that question and it came to me after the visit).. so he drew some blood, told me that I'm a bit pale looking and asked about fatigue and when I said that I can't seem to get enough sleep and the cravings I'd had he ordered blood work. He did say that tomatoes and ice are common cravings of those who have low iron.

Just an FYI. Who would have thought?

The pamphlet the doctor gave me says that wanting to eat dirt is actually very common for anemic people.

I don't have insurance, but I go for yearly checkups at Planned Parenthood. The doc there always pricks my finger and checks the blood for anemia. That's one excellent place for anyone to get checked w/o insurance.
