    Default allergies to metal

I don't know if any of you are as severly allergic to nickle as I am, but I finally was able to find a lady who makes jewelry with out any kind of metal in them.

My trademark used to be a piece of ribbon lace tied around my neck, but I could never wear anything else because I'd get a rash

Last weekend, my mom and I went to a women's expo and there was a lady selling jewelry she made, and she custom made me a necklace with out any metal - even in the clasp. It was really very simple, she just took a crystal (it was sooo pretty), put it on some clear stretchy stuff, and measured it so I would be able to fit it over a pony tail. Anyways, yesterday in the midst of packing up to move and vaccuuming I lost it - I think I vacuumed it up, however teh people at the front desk wouldn't let me look through the vaccuum bag "because you can't just go looking through vaccuum bags" whatever, I had rubber gloves of my own. They have since changed the bag on the vaccuum to prevent me from sending anyone else down to get the vaccuum (jerks). I was so sad that I had finally found a necklace that I could wear and it was gone. I emailed the lady and she is sending me a new one, for free! which is awesome, but told me just to pass the word on about her to any friends, etc.

So because she's so awesome, I'm telling you all about her...I'll post a pic of my necklace when I get it (she's mailing it either today or tomorow). If any of you are like me and can't wear any metal (and I'm allergic to everything - 14 carrot gold, sterling silver, "nickle free" stuff, you name it I'm allergic to it...the only thing I can wear is titanium but that is super hard to find)

If you are interested at all let me know and I'll get you her email address.

Hey Jillian......I have slight allergies to metal..no rashes or anything , just lethargy. Anyway I make all of my dancer jewelry from elastic and Swarovski crystals. I get tons of compliments on it's originality and beauty. The crystals are very sparkly, but look so much more modern than the standard rhinestone stripper jewelry..... I'll post a few pics of some of the stuff later.

Did you know people can suddenly become allergic to metal? My ears bleed now if I wear stainless steel posts. Icky.

i make jewlery too, no metal useually... just glass, plastic, ceramic, and hemp or cotten.... they are not that great... they are more earthy then formal... mainly i do it just for fun, something to keep my hands busy, here are some pics: http://hempknots.textamerica.com/

lethargy from metal??? wow.. I have a nickel plated copper bracelet that I never take off. its very worn, thats how I know there is copper in it but I am tired a lot... hmmmm.... i was thinking about becoming a caffine druggie to combat that...... what about gold? does anyone know someone or is alergic to gold? my wedding band is white gold, well its off white now because I need to polish it....

how do you eat madmaxine? arent most "silver"wear made from stainless steel nowadays?

    Hi Jillian!

I am severely allergic to nickel. My stainless steel navel ring wreaked havok on my belly button. My current Titanium one is better, but it still irritates my piercing sometimes. I'd love her email address.

i used to be allergic to nickel. 24k gold or better was okay, so titanium for piercings were fine. "Poor girl" had to have the best in jewelry. It happened practically overnight. i live in low-humidity, and when i went back home for the wedding...blame it on stress or wedding or whatever...i suddenly reacted to the band in my watch. After that, even the button in my jeans caused me problems. Oh...and rolling coins to take to the bank would make my hands itch!

Now i say "used to be" because after losing weight...for some reason a few ailments have disappeared as well. Carpal tunnel makes sense...losing the weight has probably put less stress on the joints. But my allergy to metal has also gone. Don't know if it is something i cut out of my diet, but i'm liking the benefits.

i would do things like hemp or friendship bracelets with beads and things. i would also use silk cording and tie it around my ankle or wrist as a bracelet or anklet and use bondage-style knots...as decorative as i could find them. Most would just say "cool" but some would give me a grin...

sexy jess - i'm visiting my parents right now, as soon as i get back to school and get her buisiness card i'll pm ya!

my nickle allergy definitly was one of the cases that developed over night. I get a rash on my tummy where the button of my jeans touch it (when people ask I just tell them I'm allergic to my pants - they dont' seem to mind to much then). I've tried so many different kinds of metal it's rediculous - so far titanium is the only thing that has worked out for me. I read some where that it's one of the purest used in jewelry, that lots of other metals are mixed with nickle, which is why I still have problems with various other metals.

The outbreaks tend to get worse when i'm stressed, when it gets warmer outside and i sweat, or for the jeans allergy to weathervane jeans, which sucks cuz I absolutly love their "tall" and "extra tall" jeans.

Oh this is kind of funny - a couple of weeks ago I decided to try to get one of those leather wrist bands with the metal circles in it, thinking - oh I'll just paint em with clear nail polish and I'll be ok. WRONG - I have little red dots evenly spaced around my wrist where the metal was in contact. I'm glad my glasses are the plastic nerd kind and not anything metal!

I'm allergic to poles too (the copper in them I think)- I have an extremely nasty right hand, it's pretty much always discolored. If I don't wash my hands right after a show my hand will go green and soft within a few hours, and the soft bits rip open on my next show! Nasty, eh?

Still looking for a solution if anyone has one!

Scarlett, I suggest gloves, I have opera length ones that cover my whole arms. You can just be very careful not to let the satin make your hand slip off of the pole.

Good idea...but I do a LOT of pole work, and really do need my grip...but maybe I could alter them somehow to make them grip? (I dunno I'm just grasping at straws here lol).

It would solve two of my biggest dancing problems- my nasty short ripped up nails and my nasty right hand. Maybe gloves made from the same material that nylons are would work?

hehe what if they some how had grippers on em or leather palms...when i was in gymnastics we had these things, I forget what they were called, for the uneven bars so that we would reduce wear on our calloused hands. Anyway, these things were like leather and they buckled around your rists then kind of went up and you put your middle finger through a hole in it. I doubt they'd be too sexy but, maybe you could some how doctor them up and wear them in conjuction with something else.

I don't know if this would work, but it may be something to think about: Latex on the palms of the gloves. They have some brush on latex grip glue to use on area rugs to keep them from slipping on hardwood floors. Don't know if that would work well on the satin, but it may be worth a shot?

My ears are the only areas that are sensitive to metal, so far. So I guess I'm lucky.

    Good luck with the gloves!
I may have put the oron in moron, but I didn't put the upid in dumb.
