Default Fake Tans (I want one...)

Today, I think I'm going to try a TAN IN A CAN! Hopefully I don't screw myself up here & turn into an oragne blob.

I was just curious as to which everyone uses (for those who use it), how it works (like staying on over hours & for sweat), & which particular brands are used/liked/hated/etc.!

I'm also curious...tanning beds. I've tried & failed at them. Prolly cos I went back all 3 different sessions to the same craptacular place. The first time I was doing ok... but my belly & thighs just were getting too dark too quick. Another time I got burned & didn't tan at all! The last session - I ended up with lines, marks, & a lil redness...and no tan. The lady at the tanning place didn't even give me advice... cos I asked her. I don't have any friends who tan either. So, can't ask them.

Anywho ~ I'm going to a different place in May. But for now, I'm going to use tan in a can. Oh ~ I don't wanna get too dark though. Just a nice lil crisp one. Not even slightly dark.

Hehe, just a whole side note truly dealing with nothing - I'm mesmerized by Lexi's golden butt! Hehe! :cheesy:

clinique has a bronzer that actually shows up as you put it on, so you can see what you are doing. it never made me orange - just beautifully bronzed!

I think Lancome is my absolute favorite brand....perfect for beginners. Neutrogena is pretty good for a cheaper brand. Whatever you use, they all have the same dying agent, so it's really about the application method you prefer.

    I like mousse....applies evenly.

I've had a lot of practice at this, and have screwed it up many times, but now I have it down pat. Her are my tips.

Exfoliate...no need for anything fancy, just a regular washcloth and good towel dry of the skin are effective.

Before applying, make sure you have at least 3 hours where you won't be getting wet or sweating. It's okay to put it on before bed. It won't permanently stain anything, but the bronzers will rub off and fabrics (you should be using one with a bronzer).

Use gloves. I cannot think of anything more important to self-tanner application than gloves. Don't even bother doing this unless you use gloves. Use gloves. Last time, I swear.....use gloves!

Apply starting at your legs first and work your way up. Avoid your feet and hands, or put a little bit at the tops...be careful with the sides and fingers/toes. Just avoid them completely.

Use a product desgined for faces on your face.

When it's all on, use a baby wipe to wipe anything you might have screwed up on your hands and feet. Also use it to wipe your forearms and you might want to clean inside your belly button...tanner has a tendency to get a little thick in there and it looks dirty.

Apply lotion to your knees and elbows...it's okay if it's a little gooby.

    Clean your hands again.

Let it dry about 20 minutes before you put on clothes.

reapply about twice a week, but you only need to exfoliate when you get lizard skin....you'll know what I mean when you see it....cracked tan look.

I used neutrogena. I feel awkward, lol. I think I'm just going to start bed tanning again (hopefully it'll work). I put it on about an hour and a half ago... color's showing up. It's real light, I put just a lil on. I didn't want to over do it & yeah - be a mess. The good thing about the neutrogena, was it was a goldy color as soon as you put it on so you can see where you applied, it fades in though... I looked for the clinique but couldn't find it. Ehh, I like it... but I dunno. I should fiddle around more with it - when I don't have to work! LOL. Anyways, thanks for the tips!!! Preciate it all...xo

I use the mist tanning booths, they work great! But it can get a little costly, about $25-$30 a session. You have to go back once a week.

I like Coppertone Endless Summer. Color shows up within 30 minutes, so you can tell if you've messed up. And it's not too expensive.

    Hi Nekko,
Just read over your dilemma, I noticed everyone gave you tips on then bottle tans, but not for the Tanning salons. I am in the midst of opening a salon myself, as I've been in the biz for over 5 years now. Some helpful tips and advice for your Bed tanning experience:

There are two different types of bulbs. The UVA & UVB. One burns more, and the other is a Bronzing bulb (works with your melanin--cells that give you the brown pigment-- to make it brown, instead of red, & burnt).

    Also,
I would ask the salon which type of bulb it carries, and what the current hour is on the bed you plan on using. The current replacement time on bulbs can range anywhere from 600 to 800 or 1000 hours--1K goes to the bronzing bulbs which most salons don't carry due to cost--. Depending on the max time and the hours of the bulbs, you yourself can determine the minutes you should start out at, as well as your skin type you should know when your ready to move up in minutes. I don't know why you had stripes on you etc, the only thing I can think of is that the acrylic's were old, which blocks the UV rays unevenly, which can result in some areas of the body tan & others not. The reason you burnt, was due to the type of bulb (most likely) and then your skin type & newness of the bulb etc.

Anywayz, so, I told ya about the bulbs, yez, an the UV types, yez, hmm, what else? For your tanning experience, they should be giving you a personal consultation of your skin type, along with the last time you tanned/meds your on etc, and then last a tour of the salon, as well as famaliarizing you with the bed (s) you'll be using.

Now, last thing, ( I hope this is helpful, don wanna be typing for nothin, ;->)..

Lotions. Have you used any? Lotions can increase your tan, and the life of your tan up to 60%, no lie. There are many different types. Bronzing Accellerator, 'Tingle' w/acc. , cooling w/acc + bronzing and tingle.. u get the point.
If you need help choosing a lotion best for you, lemme know, n I'd be glad to help. But, if your not getting this kind of help from the salons you go to, I'd say keep searching until u find the one, doesn't seem very professional to me.
NOTE: Do NOT use outdoor lotions/oils etc. at the indoor tanning salons. they will ruin the acrylics on the beds, thus, creating a crappy tan for you if the owner cannot provide new ones... hope I helped!

I groaned when I saw the subject of this thread because the tanning thing is an issue for me.

I am an Aussie boy so used to having a little bit of colour, but found that when I moved from Adelaide to Melbourne some years ago the tan was but a memory! (Melbourne's climate is notoriously changeable and often overcast )

So I did the unthinkable and started to use beds. I moved to Hong Kong and found a similar dilemma as there are no beaches here to run off to (that you would want to go to) and the public pools are a no no too. SO I have gone back to beds, stand up ones this time.

My problem is that I notice they do age my skin. i am using moisturisers and all that. I hate fake tan because I sweat profusely and it wrecks some of my cossies.

DajoMYA can you recommend a solution for me? Is there some type of lotion I aught to use in the stand up bed? I tend to do only 8 minute sessions a go, once or twice a week. I like to have a tan line cause I think they are hot, plus it helps me gauge the level of my tan too I guess.

I stopped tanning because I ran into one of my old high school friends a few years back who used to "worship" the beds. And, even though she was only 25 (at the time) her skin looked like those old ladies in the third world countries that you see in National Geographic. She looked like a walking handbag. Scared me enough to never go back to the beds.

Now, I use Mystic Tan. I have used the tan in the bottle (Coppertone) and thought they were very good. The main reason I stopped using them now is because I have a little girl running around here and it's hard to put it on with an 18 month old hanging on you. LOL So, Mystic Tan, you go to the Salon...get undressed, put on the lotion, stand in the booth, 20 seconds later you're done, drying off and getting dressed. All done.

I love the Mystic Tan...you may want to try that. It does get a little costly, but I know that you live in the Chicagoland area, and a lot of the salons are giving 2-4-1's right now (in the weekly mailers). I just collect them. haahaa

    Anyways...have fun!!

Dont go to a tanning bed! When you get have crows feet by the time you are 25 you will be so sorry! These days you can get just as dark with out the sun damage. All fake tanners, from the salon mystic tan to the cheapest bottle tan use DHA as the active ingredient. Pick a bottle tan, exfoliate and use 2-3 times a week. The site www.makeupalley.com is great for reviewing the best self tanners by real people.

I think I have used every fake bottle tan there is on the market, so let me....

My two FAVORITES: Loreal Tinted Bronzer (in "deep dark") and Banana Boat Tinted Bronzer ("deep/dark" as well).

I get the Loreal Bronzer at CVS, a/b $9.00 a bottle and it lasts me about 5-6 applications. **With this tanner, make SURE you wait an entire hour before putting on any clothes, as it comes out very very wet and takes awhile to dry. This one gets me the darkest and most even tan out of all the fake tanning lotions.

The other good one, Banana Boat, dries much faster but tends to "crack" a few days quicker than Loreal.

I have also had experience with the WORST fake tanning lotions: #1 WORST is Nuetragena Bronzing lotion! It sucked ASS for me, personally. No matter how clean, exfoliated, and lotioned I was, the crap streaked EVERYWHERE. I could just not rub the junk in. I looked like I had a skin disease and I was late to work just trying to make it look normal! (I called the 1 -800 number on the drive to work and told them I couldn't believe they manufactured such a shitty product. They offered me some free bottles of it..go figure ).

When it comes to the color of the self-tanner, I always go for the bottles where the tanner immediately comes out a dark brown color. I never have good results with anything but bronzing self-tanners. I just cant see the "tan" even 4 hours later with the white/clear lotions. Plus the brown tinted ones make it easiest to see where the tan is going too.

The best part about the self tanners though, really is avoiding the sun's aging rays. The worst part is having a VERY tan looking body and the whitest fingers and toes in the world. I gave in today and for the first time in a year, hit the tanning bed.

    Good luck!

I've tried a couple different brands and for the life of me CAN'T get them to go on evenly. I exfoliate and in general my skin is in really good condition so I don't have any clue what the issue is. I even had my boyfriend help me with it once with no better luck.

    Hey Mariah,

Thanks for the link to that great sight! I am a devoted fan to banana boat. I have not used a tanning bed in years until I just started at this club about two months ago. I stopped tanning my face years ago, so I don't really have crow's feet. I cover my face, collar bone, chest and hands.

I know on stage my chest looks a bit white compared to the rest of me, but I just love having a tanned tummy and legs. I figure I only use the booth 15 minutes every two weeks. If I have to get a mole removed, at least it will be on my legs and not my face

    Cheers,

I used to use Coppertone oil-free (the cheap-o one in the brown bottle)...it was fine, but this week I bought a bottle of Loreal Bronze Sublime gel and I LOVE IT! It's very oily, so it kind of spreads itself, and is so nice and even! And the color is very nice and bronze. Some people won't like it because it is definitely oily feeling, but if you don't mind that, it's awesome and also pretty cheap.

    that's a great site, Mariah

    Another good site is sunless.com

it's strictly about self-tanning and different tanners.

I use Coppertone Endless Summer in Light/Medium. It's very easy to put on, inexpensive and fades evenly over several days. Bonus: I've never had "cracked tan" which necessitated exfoliating places I could barely reach. The color isn't the best, but it's a nice, do-able color and the other benefits outweigh the slightest of orangy tints.

I also use SkinDrench, a spray available only in salon supply stores. I'm iffy on this one. It's expensive. It sprays on unevenly (just like hairspray, you can have none come out, an even spray come out or too much come out). You MUST exfoliate, and often, or you'll get dirty-looking spots (it's bronzed dead skin, but looks like crusted dirt). In it's favor, I have never seen a more realistic color in a fake tan. A lovely brown color- no gold, no yellow, no orange, just TAN. You can spray your hands and feet! It also last much longer than lotions and you don't have to wait around forever for it to dry. Smells nice too.

I stick exclusively with fake tan-in-a-bottle products. I'm very, very fair (practically glow under the blacklights) and burn easily. I've no intention of winding up with old-lady skin from tanning beds and even a product with a pronounced orange tint looks like a nice tan under the dim lights of a club. Fake all the way, baby.

i'm a big fan of skindrench as well, but the uneven nature of aerosol spray is definitely a downer. i've just started using savage bronze exfoliator, foam, and lotion. you can find it at sally beauty-- i love it. it's a nice golden color, smells kind of chocolatey, and the color fades slower than a lot of brands i've tried. the foam is tinted, too, so you can see where it goes. hope this helps!
