    Default Flatirons--How Often?

I'm sure there is a post about this somewhere, but I did not get a chance to find it. My question is, if you blowdry and/or flatiron your hair, how often do you do it? Is your hair all broken, split, and damaged? Thanks for any replies. I blowdry and iron my hair twice a week--I have curly hair, and I used to wear it curly at work before, but now I like to wear it more straight. Hope my hair doesn't start breaking and splitting!

A flat iron will destroy your hair if you use it all the tiime especially like every day. Ceramic is best. If you like keeping your hair straight more often don't wash it every day.

Maybe try air drying then flat ironing to minimize stress on your hair?

Yeah, I don't wash it everyday--only about 3 times a week. I do use a ceramic iron--and it works great, too! It's the CHI iron. I use it about 2 times a week. I deep condition at least once a week, and protein and olive oil treatments every month. I usually let my hair airdry mostly before blowdrying it, so that it will take maybe 20 mins. instead of an hour of blowdrying. If I let it airdry with no blowdrying to help relax the curls, then it takes FOREVER to flatiron it to smoothness. I use heat-protectant products before blowdrying and flatironing. My stylist says it's okay to heatstyle my hair twice a week, as long as it is protected. But I just wanted to see if any other girls use flatirons this much. Thanks, Sapphire, for your reply.

this is pretty much exactly what i do. sometimes I let my hair "marinate" and take a shower before bed and sleep with the wet hair and then wake up and blow dry whatevers left wet still. I usually flat iron it if I'm going out, working, or have a presentation in class or something that I have to look nice for - other wise the big curly red bun is what I opt for. I always use moisturizing shampoo and conditioner too, and my hair is very health and soft.

To answer your question directly - sometimes I do it more than twice a week, sometimes less. Never every day though, and that's mostly out of laziness - I have sooo much hair!

I have curly hair too...I let my hair air dry until it's just a little damp. Then I take a natural bristle round brush and blow dry it straight (I put hair serum in my hair to help smooth out the frizzies). I use the straight iron mainly on the very top layer that is seen to help relax the frizzies.

I also do a major conditioning treatment on my hair on the day that I dance (which is pretty much the only time my hair goes through a "session"). 3 hours before I need to be at work, I'll wash my hair, put intense conditioning treatment on it and let it sit with a cap on (to retain heat) for 45 minutes. Rinse out and then start the styling process. My hair is softer than anybody I work with. I also only rinse my hair the next morning (to get that club smell out) and then just gently pull it up.

I work twice a week--darn! If I worked once a week then I would only heatstyle once a week. The "session" treatments sound like a good idea, so maybe I should do deep conditioning twice per week instead of once per week--for 15 mins. at least each time. I gotta get a larger CHI, too. Hopefully that will make these "sessions" go by faster.

Hi, KittyKat! A CHI is a ceramic flatiron. It straightens out your hair using ceramic heat, which is supposedly safer and better than traditional metal plates. Ceramic irons are supposed to seal in moisture and seal the cuticle, and eliminate static using ion technology (the ceramic produces either negative or positive ions--forgot which ones). Ceramic glides over your hair much easier than metal. The original CHI flatiron which has no temperature controls, gets very hot--400 degrees. So it does not take much time at all to smooth my hair. I have tried flatirons with metal plates and they did nothing for my hair. I would have to keep going over my hair to get any kind of smoothness, and I would have to hold the iron on my hair for a while. The CHI iron has been a miracle flatiron for me--it smooths my hair out without having to hold it or keep going over my hair with it. Sure, the iron gets hot, but the hotter the temperature, the faster it gets the job done, and the faster the job gets done, the less heat you expose your hair to. I have the original CHI flatiron, but CHI makes three other types--CHI Turbo, which DO have temperature controls. And they come in three different sizes.
