    Default Costume patterns

I have been dancing for about 6 months and I'm still excited to go to work every day and doll myself up and make lots of money. I like to wear many different costumes/outfits all the time, but they're soooo expensive! I work in Toronto (Canada) and don't know how our prices compare to American stores' but I am thinking of making my own stuff. Does anyone know where I can find patterns for dance outfits?

I honestly don't know. I did a search but kept finding leotard patterns. If you have luck, let me know. I want to learn to make my own too.

In the meantime, you could always buy cheap dresses and customise them. I used to occasionally buy things from the kids section in some shops because they are tight, bright, cheap and fun (and the material was good too)!

I just took an old dress that I loved but needed to retire and ripped out the seams (with a seam ripper) and then laid each piece on tracing paper and made my own patterns. This way, you know that you are going to like your dress/outfit and that it's going to fit properly. If you are just starting, you may want to begin by making thongs, bikini tops, etc. Things that are a little smaller until you get the hang of sewing.

    Have fun!!!!

    Welcome Meea!
I've actually found some great stuff at 2nd hand stores. (Wash well) The last one being a pink and silver sparkly bell bottom suit.
I made it short sleeved, cropped and narrowed the jacket, and made the pants into hip-hugger shorts. Oh, I also added some fake crystal buttons. So hot! And one of a kind.
As for patterns, I make my own. Same way VenusGoddess recommends with a fave garment, or from scratch. Once I have something on which is to my liking (all inside out and held together with pins), I take it apart and trace each piece onto paper before sewing. Label each piece, stick 'em in a folder with a pic of the completed garment on the outside and file them away.
VenusGoddess, I've given up on thongs. Maybe one out every five I made turned out. :'( lol
    Happy sewing!

I know what you mean. They are not always the easiest. What was the problem that you were encountering when you were sewing them?

Making the ones with elastic, just keeping it in place while I'm stitching. And the ones with the contrast trim, I'm impatient, and burn myself ironing it flat, and if it's not ironed first I tend to pull too much and it puckers. Any tips you have would be greatly appreciated!

I'm a pin freak. I pin everything down. I do pin down the elastic a bit and then just go REALLY slow with the machine. I pin down the trim, as well. I don't think you're really supposed to (??) but it's the only way that it keeps it in place. I'll ask, though. It doesn't take me too long to make the thongs, anyways...and I think it goes much faster when I pin parts of the elastic and trim down...have you tried that?

I too cut apart old dresses and copy them. Same with thongs. I've actually had pretty good luck making my own thongs from a pattern I made from a pair of thong panties that I loved - they fit perfectly and were really flattering, so I just made a pattern and used a lining to make them street legal.

I have just started making bras, too. You can find bra patterns online and make them out of stripper-wear material and embellish them as you like. Both thongs and bras only take a short time to make, and they only use a small amount of material, so it isn't a big deal if you have to make a couple to get it right.

I really recommend getting some tracing paper and making your own designs, too - it really isn't that hard. For one thing, you can take your own measurements to base your pattern on, and for another, most of the material you'll be using is really stretchy and gives you some room for error.

Have fun! I love sewing so much that I just took a part-time job at a local fabric store. The employee discount will probably wind up saving me more than I earn!

Kwik Sew patterns are best for dancing, though you may have to do some alterations. I use their thong pattern for my t-bars (but shorten it so that it's not up to my belly button!), their catsuit pattern, booty shorts pattern, bra pattern...kwik sew rocks.

Here is a pattern that I designed for my girlfriend for a party that we went to and she also wore it 1 time to dance in. Sorry I dont have an actual picture of the real outfit, my girlfriend sold it to a friend of hers that loved it and she dances to. What it is supposed to look like is those nude pics that you see from time to time that have pink stars covering the private areas of the ladies. In the dark, this outfit is so cute because when a blacklight hits the stars and other pink areas, they light up so bright!
I may look intimidating, but those that really know me, know me and can count on me as a friend.

And for those that are ever in the San Jose area and need somebody to go shoe shopping with you, I am your man for the day!

yeah, its real easy to make your own patterns, especially if you have done thatmind of thing in school.

just make sure you use stretch fabric with the stretch going the right way !lol i made that mistake once. ha

i use an item i already have as a basis, and then modify lots to make some new pattern, and the final garment.

    easy peasy

it helps if you have access to a decent sewing machine, industrials are best. cos there is one, i forget what its called, and it specifically sews lycra seams by folding at the same time....its so much easier that way

Susan how interesting that you have started sewing bras I recently started researching corset patterns I'd like to start sewing my own bras and corsets.

In any event, I was going to suggest patterns from historic eras especially for theme costumes. Example, rockabilly skirts also these Edwardian bustlines I've seen while looking at corset patterns HUBBA HUBBA you don't see cleavage like that on the street today!
