    Default water poisioning?

I just heard for the first time, someone mentioning drinking excessive amounts of water being water poisioning and not good for your body. I have had many health issues, and never once before heard of this, including during the time when I was on a strict workout schedule and drinking almost 2 gallons a day.

Can anyone explain this to me further and what exactly it does to your body?

I read in 'Health" magazine that the everage person does not need even 8 glasses of water daily. All we are doing is making ourselves pee more and depleting ourselves of vital nuttients. We are actually flushing them out with water.

If you do an hour of heavy sweating and get hot, yes drink water to replenish lost fluid. Later, sip on Gatorade.

I think the population thinks drinking more water is better, but new studies show the average person who does not do hard labour in the sun sweating all day does not need this much.

Yes, drinking too much water has killed a marathon runner some time ago i read about. He was not the only one to overdose on too much water too soon. Water mixes with other "fluid" nutrients in our bodies, and it's kind of a "shock" to the system when too much too soon for one.

He deleted his potasium level to a dangerous low, and died.

We get water in our foods, soft drinks and the water we are drinking....That should be enough. The ones who easily become dehydrated are major alcohol drinkers, cancer patients, etc.

Just what i have read, feel free to correct me.

Of course, the reason that most doctors encourage the majority of the population to drink more water is simply because most Americans do not eat enough fresh fruits and veggies. Most americans drink soft drinks, coffee, tea, and anything BUT water. If you are eating extremely healthy and are drinking water daily, then you do not have to worry about drinking a gallon of water. However, your body will always tell you when it's dehydrated (dry skin, cracked lips, lethargy, headaches, etc). If you feel like you need to drink something, just drink a glass of water. Drinking anything else is only making it worse (caffeine flushes the water from your system).

Those articles aren't really written for the "healthy" people, but the people who think McD's makes nutritious meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It's for the people who think that drinking coke with every meal and for whenever they are thirsty means that they are getting enough fluids.

I don't know guys...hearing that 8 glasses of water a day is too much sounds pretty whacked to me. I've never heard that before in my life. Depending on your size, amount of exercise, temperature etc you CAN overdose on water and get water poisoning...but it's fairly rare. 2 gallons may be a bit excessive...cut it back to say 1 and a half. It's true that North Americans do not get enough fruits and veggies in thier diet, which contributes to some of the water loss. HOWEVER, it's pretty rare to find someone who doesn't drink one of the following almost every day: Coffee, certain teas, pop and yes, some kinds of juice. These types of liquids contain water, but are diuretics. They take more water from your body (your liver when it's processing the liquid) than you are taking in by drinking them. So I have always gone by this guideline:
Aim for 8 glasses (not necissarily huge ones) of water per day, for every coffee or tea I slug back one more, and if you work out ALWAYS bring a water bottle to the gym and drink it while you are working out. On hot days, I up it one or two more glasses. I've never personally had water poisoning, however one of my friends last year went to the ER because she was a practicing anorexic who drank gallons and gallons of water to keep her stomach occupied. Anyways, we all thought she'd collapsed from lack of food...but the biggest issue when she got there was the water poisoning. Thankfully, she's fully recovered . Anyways, I hope that helps ya.

most people are EXTREMELY dehydrated. Chronic dehydration is an epidemic in the us and many other places. Most of the foods we eat and drink dehydrate us like bread, coffee, tea, cola, salty foods, chips, alcohol, medications, ect.

I don't think you guys and girls need to worry about too much water, I think you should be concerned about too little.

There's a great book called "Your body's many cries for water" that shows, with scientific information, that dehydration is a much larger problem than ever imagined. The author states that as much as 95% of the population is chronically dehydrated.

BTW, water is only flushing out toxins and inorganic minerals out of the body, and ones in excess that we don't need. The body does not let go of needed minerals and vitamins in urine, come on, give the human body a little credit.

BTW, the reason runners die is because they jack their heart rate up so high, and are burning thousands and thousands of calories in a race, a very unhealthy combination. Running long distances is not healthy at all, and several runners have dropped dead at the end of races.

Obviously drinking gallons and gallons of water per day is not wise, but I would say 1/2 - 1 gallon is perfectly fine..... Just my opinion.

I personally don't drink much water at all beacuse I get my water from the 10-20 servings of fruit I consume daily.

Thanks for all your imput... I dont drink coffee, tea, or soda at all, so those dont really factor in, but I think I'll start to cut back to 1 - 1 1/2 gallons (hopefully then I wont be in the bathroom every 10 minutes! lol)

I ride horses during the day (my other job) and so I am out in the sun for hours on end working out, so hopefully I dont have to worry about this whole water poisioning idea... it seems so bizarre!

I've heard of this. It's called Overhydration or Water Intoxication. Infants are especially susceptible and you should be careful that they don't swallow alot of water at the pool for this reason.

There was a fraternity here in Dallas that got in trouble recently because of a hazing incident. They forced their pledges to drink large amounts of water. One of them ended up in a coma. He recovered, but the frat lost their charter.

Here's a link with more info.

Wow that makes a lot of sense... I have low blood pressure b/c of not enough sodium. I must be flushing it out of my body. I can't honestly say that the low bp has always been considered a bad thing, but I am ALWAYS cold, and don't have great circulation under certain conditions. Thanks for clearing some of this stuff up!

Miss George is EXACTLY right, down for the name of it.
An excess of water consumption is assocciated with the body's elimination of other vital elctrolyes which go along for the ride. This is aggrevated by other activities which cause the body to lose sodium and potadium like vomiting or extreme exercise like the aforementioned marathin runner incodent in the Boston marathon.

This dilutes the electrolytes in the blood stream, causing sytem short circuits. The body if pushed to far on this scale has to be restored to balance very carefully or it can induce a condition called central pontine myelinolysis (in over simplifed form scaring on the pons of the brain). This condition is normally found in autopsies and has a fairly high mortality rate. I survived it (after 10 weeks in the hospital and rehabilitation to learn how to talk and swallow and walk), but 4 1/2 years later still need a cane to walk because my balance is screwy.

Don't screw around with pushing your metabolism far away from what it designed to be. In conditions where their is vastly unusual sweating or a monster stomach flu the electrolyte rich sports drinks are what you need and not at the end when its totally out of whack. Water alone is not enough to replace what you lose.

I am with Audrey, I have only heard it in association with x... people dance and drink and dance and drink, but they over compinsate on the drinking. I have heard that gatorade or something similar is better for such activity (because of the added electrolytes).

wow, sounds like me.... I hate salt. I mean I can not stand even the taste of a little garlic salt. its gross. I am always cold too, and sometimes my hands go numbish when I am playing racketball or something. intresting.......

but I am also always thirsty, I dont drink pop, rarely drink coffee and tea... mostly I drink juice, gatorade, or kool-aid. sometimes plain water, but not often.

I heard somewhere onetime that drinking more then 2 cups at once was bad for you, diluted the blood too much or something......... I dont know.......
