Default aaahh I just screwed up my credit!

Here's the situation: I recently moved home from school, and one of my bills was not forwarded to my house, so I never recieved it. End result, I completely forgot to pay it!

I know I'm an itiot, but how much will this screw up my credit report? I know stuff like this stays on your report for years. I've had 1 late payment ever in my life, but like I said this one I didnt even realize until I got my new bill!

It won't matter much if it is only one ,and is only a little late (less than 60 days). A one-off could quite logically be the result of a post office snafu or your mail delivered to the neighbors place.

call the creditor, tell them your situation and ask them to delete the late payment. Any lates look bad because it looks like you don't have the money to pay your bills.

This sounds like something that a polite phone call could clear up rather quickly.

Most creditors will delete lates if there is a good reason. If you need further advice, feel free to contact me at [email protected] and I will help you clear it up.

Talking about overdue bills on one's credit report. I know I'm Australian but temporarily think of me as American (if you know the Australian answer to this.. please do respond).

I have an overdue bill for $300-odd on my credit report from a phone company that I supposedly signed up with for a couple of months. The wierd thing is I was still with my other (main) phone company at the same time this other phone company was supposedly in charge of my long distance (and a few other) services.

It is the ONLY overdue bill or mark on my credit report. It is due to be erased by 2006 hence has been in my credit report for 3 years (approx.). I've since been declaring my income and never had anything overdue or late since.

Should I just wait it out (since 2006 isn't that far away) or try and get the mark erased ??? I did apply for a credit card once and was denied.. I'm thinking based on that mark on my credit report. I havn't applied for another credit card since (due to thinking I'll get denied by other places).

Well, as far as I know, up here in Canada (I know, neither US nor Australia, but might still shed some light), you might get away with just waiting it out...but if it's unpaid, they can keep reporting it, and it will start again from 0 years. That's to say, in 2005 they might re-file the credit complaint, and you'll have to wait another [however many] years, and so on and so forth. If it's legitimately your debt, I'd say pay it...you wouldn't want something like that to stop you from getting a mortgage or something!

If you can get it erased then by all means DO SO.

But credit isnt all its cracked up to be - my girlfriend just used a mortgage broker and got a better interest rate than I did using a damn bank - her credit - she had a bankruptcy!

And getting a credit card? Just get a secured deposit credit card!

If it's a situation that Ti Amo described, you can usually call the creditor and make an agreement that if you pay off the debt, they will clear it off the credit report (by making an error correction). You need to have this in writing. Ask them to send you a letter that states that, once you have the letter, then send the payment...keeping the cancelled check for proof. If it's not taken off, then you can clear it with the credit companies yourself.

Everyone should get a copy of the credit report. ESPECIALLY if you've been turned down for any reason (in the US, companies, by law have to send you a free credit report when you are declined credit). I had a friend who makes decent money, has one credit card, a mortgage and car payment...and had never had a late payment ever. She got declined for credit and when she got the report, she found out that there was 2 credit cards floating around out there. The good thing is that they were never charged to, but it can go against you (unused but available balances).

So, call that company and get it cleared up. Then, get a copy of a Trimerge Bureau Report and make sure that it is accurate.
