Default Do nails ever repair themselves?

So after 12 years of acrylic nails, I took them off last night and my nails are thin as paper!
Anyone ever try going back to natural nails after being a fake nail junkie for a long period of time?
How long does it take for them to grow back and become healthy and strong?
Anything I can do to help them??
    THANKS

Use Herome extra strong nail hardener. Its from the Netherlands and available in some places in the US. Hands down the best product to use....Still, you will have to let your nails grow out for them to really look good.

So true, Walmart sells nail vitamins at a very reasonable price. I am currently taking the ones for hair and I have noticed they are also working wonders on my nails.

    http://www.herome.nl/

Their online ordering process sucks and they do not have a current US distributor. I am in negotiations with the company to be a distributor in Texas. I discovered the product when I lived in Holland, I have no financial incentive for pushing the line.

Their products are awesome, far superior to OPI Strenghteners or NailTek, I believe......

Let me know if you want me to order you some. I can sell them online through my secure web site which accepts VISA/MC once I have them in. Thanks! Kat

I had acryrlics for years also. When I removed them, my nails were not only paper thin, but the nail bed was peeling as well. For me, it took slightly longer than just growing my nails all the way out. Even when they grew all the way out, they were still kinda thin. So, while these hardners will definately help smooth out the bed and strengthen your nails, I wouldn't be surprised if it takes 6-9 months for your nails to be completely normal again.

Actually, it's better if you don't put anything on your nails at all. Part of the reason the nails get so thin and damaged is because of a lack of air to the nail (they kind of suffocate). I had arcrylic nails for a couple of years and when I had them taken off, I just about cried. My nail tech told me to massage my cuticles with Vitamin E oil every day and to put lotion on my nails and let it soak in, then massage both the cuticle and nails with a soft toothbrush. But, she told me to never put any polish or nail hardners on them (as it keeps the nail from breathing). I did this for about 1 year...and my nails are now in better condition than they were before I got arcrylics.

    Hope this helps!!

mine are too! Although I HAD to use some kind of hardner/sealer because of the peeling until they grew out. Then they were still thin for a couple months after. I theorized that the nail bed under my cuticle had suffered as well. They look really nice now though.

I used to be a nail tech and heres the deal. In order for the artificial nails to adhere to your nail bed 2 things must happen. One, the nail tech must file you nails to remove your natural oil which prevent good sticking, and to rough them up so that they adhere better. Two, the chemical that they brush over the top of your nail actually eats microscopic holes in the nail bed so that when they apply the acryllic it sinks in and adheres (that's why it can feel like it burns). Both of theses things are what make your nails thinner once they are removed. Usually once they grow out there are no more problems though...usually. Honestly, every time i've worn them my nails take months to get back the original strenght again.

I have heard that gellatin (sp) is good for your nails and hair. They sell them in dietary supplements or you can just plain eat jello.

I've worn artifical nail for 10+ years, and finally decied to cut them loose. I started using "Nailtiques" nail protein. Within two weeks I could actually feel the difference.

They carry different types for each problem your nails may face during and after the feeling prcess.

I found two websites 1) 2) for beauty products where you can find nails repair products. I already purchased these kind of products from there.

Does anyone have any secrets for repairing a cracked nail? Besides superglue... It's a crack right along the edge but I cant seem to get it to grow out. (Yeah, eat more jello, LOL)
