    Default Depo-Provera

I thought I'd post this for those of you who are on Depo-Provera or considering using it.

Birth Control Shot Linked to Bone Thinning

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Depo-Provera (depot medroxyprogesterone), a popular birth control injection, seems to promote bone loss, and the effects increase over a 2-year period, new research shows.

Dr. Abbey B. Berenson, of the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, and colleagues compared the bone-thinning effects of Depo-Provera, birth control pills, and non-hormone contraception in a study of 191 young women.

Women who used Depo-Provera for 24 months had an average loss in bone density of 5.7 percent. These patients experienced a 3.2-percent loss between months 12 and 24. Those who used pills, by contrast, had a 2.6-percent loss at 24 months.

The results are published in the medical journal Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Depo-Provera "is intended for long-term use," the authors write. "Thus, additional studies that follow users of this method for extended periods of time and those that determine whether these changes are reversible are critical so that physicians can accurately counsel patients regarding this method."

Thank you for posting this. I took Depo a few years ago--it did it's job but made me sick, literally. I would get really faint and dizzy every month, and CRAZY! My skin looked fabulous and I had no periods, but needless to say, I won't be taking this shot anymore. Bone-thinning is just one more reason for me not to! Thanks for the heads-up.

Thanks for the info. I havent taken it but I know a few girls who said they gained a ton of weight either while ON depo, or after.
Either is reason enough for me not to take it. lol

yea.. im on depo, and ive actually lost a bit of weight!

But i have also lost some breast size since my last couple of shots!!

I HAVE been on it for 3 years, and in my first year i went from 123 and now im 108, and i eat just as much if not more.

i am fully aware of bone thinning, however thats why they tell the girls to take calcium supplements. Something i didnt know until the 2nd year on it!

also, my sex drive is gone!

I guess im going to go for the uv or whatever next time.

i swear though, the worst side effect has to be the loss in breast size!

I read about the bone-thinning on yahoo. Kinda scary.

I'm terrified of Depo-Provera. First, I don't like the fact that I can't just *stop* it if I want to get pregnant or if it makes me sick. And I just know it will make me sick, fat and break out. I've been on Triphasil 28 pills for years and years. Every time I try another brand of hormonal birth control, I'm just miserable. (Nuva Ring, the patch, other pills) The worst time was after my last baby. I decided to try Ortho-Tricyclin because it's supposed to help with mild to moderate acne. I had heard fabulous things about it from friends, but it didn't work out for me. I gained 20 pounds, broke out like a teenager and was so sick that I was convinced I was pregnant again. I was so disappointed! Oh, well. I guess I'll stick with Triphasil.

Well I take Calcium suppliements not to mention I love cheese and my "no fat" milk.... so I'm not in short supply of calcium hence I really doubt the bone-thinning applies to me.

I've been on DP for 2 years or so now... I love the stuff! I had so much more side effects with the pill than this.. no weight gain unless it's my own fault (not exercising and eating healthy)... no sickness and well.. I don't want kids ever so I won't have to worry about not falling pregnant easily.

I also love the fact that I have no period so I can work whenever I want without having to worry about tampons I call it my holiday as I never liked having a period in the first place...

I'm a happy and satisfied DP user

I have a relative on this shot, has been for 5 months now. Of course needed when due again for the shot. The only side effect she has at this point is spotting here and there, she takes iron twice monthly..prescribed, and a multi vit. Womens day with extra calcium daily. However Iron and calcium don't work together, so she takes her iron with OJ and the daily with extra calcium after meals.

As for the shot making you a higher risk for other cancers, i have heard. This is not true. What simply hapens, some women don't use protection anymore (condoms) because they can't get pregnant, so They are wide open to HPV which has been known to turn into cancer for one example.

Just watch and listen to your body while on this shot.

I hated depo, it made me fat and i bled every day for a year and a half. I went from 145 to 169 pounds and i felt so disgusting, sex was agony an the fact that my boyfriend got blood on him every time we had sex made me have emotional breakdowns, cmon your not supposed to cry after sex. I was miserable! Now im on ortho tricyclen Lo and i am back at my old weight, i have clear skin and the only complaints are that my sex drive is kinda low and i get morning sickness every once in a while. Im fine with it right now but i think birth control kinda sux no matter what kind it is!

I agree with Oceanblue- I think bc kind of sucks, no matter what. I don't know anyone who has had no side effects at all.
The shot works wonders for one of my friends. Two other girls I know hated it- one bled every day for six months, the other one started losing her hair (!!!) and was so moody, her hubby almost left her, lol. And believe it or not, my cousin actually got pregnant on it. We're still trying to figure that one out as it's supposed to be more effective than the pill.
I'm currently on Ortho Tricyclen Lo, and I can't wait to switch pills. Regular Ortho worked fine for me, except for a bit of weight gain in the beginning, but this low estrogen crap makes me spot all the time. It's like having two periods. ugh! I have an appt. on Tuesday and I think I'm going to ask about that new pill where you only have 4 periods a year. Anyone know anything about that?

I was on Depo and hated it - I got extremely depressed and moody, completely lost my sex drive, and felt like crap all the time. Then it took forever to wear off, and my periods never went back to normal. What a nightmare. It sucks that everyone responds so differently to it and you don't know what will happen to you until you do it. I have been on other types of birth control and never had adverse reactions (weight loss/gain, mood swings, etc) so I figured I wouldn't with Depo, boy was I wrong! But I have plenty of friends that love it - I guess it just depends on your chemical makeup!

I know its off the topic of depo, but...

does anyone know a website that lists all the different brands of pills and their differences? I use the ring, which I love, but my insurance will pay for pills and not the ring. I may stick with it anyway, b/c I've hated all the pills I've tried, but if anyone has more info I'd appreciate it.

I posted something about this before.... I was on the depo for about 2 years and didn't do too bad. The only side-effect was depression... and I took antidepressants for that. I didn't gain any weight or anything. The crazy hormone thing went away too . However, most girls have a problem with it. I had asked my doctor about bone thinning. That only becomes a problem after 5 years on the shot.

Is there a class-action lawsuit for Depo or anything like that? Whoever develops and markets this shit is the spawn of Satan! Seriously, they make it sound like this miracle thing - All the doc tells you is that you won't have a period, and it lasts for 3 months... Great! What could be better? And then you read the brochure (which they give you AFTER the shot) and it talks about a 5lb weight gain and some spotting, still not a big deal... And then after you've been bleeding for 3 weeks straight, you start to look for more information and come across literally thousands of women who have depression, serious hair loss, weight gain, fibromyalgia, ovarian cysts, painful and dry sex, sterility, etc. from this demon drug. And that's nowhere to be found in the brochure and so prevalent that it CAN'T be a coincidence and there's no way the company doesn't know about it. You know that crap has been recalled twice in a 6 mos. period like 2 years ago or something ridiculous like that? It's really scary... and then the fact that you can't detox yourself. You're stuck with it for 3 months and then even longer if your body doesn't flush it all right away. It's just wrong on so many levels. This company has to be in a shitload of lawsuits right now. I only got one shot (thank God) - I have 5 weeks left on it and I will never do it again. I'm shedding hair more than my frikkin' dog (a Cavalier King Charles), sex hurts more now (3 mos postpartum) than it did at 6 weeks (lol, ok, 5 weeks but don't tell my OB/GYN) and I do have some pretty serious depression. I don't know if that's because I'm fat and ugly and useless as a human being or just the hormones talking - Either way, it sucks. I just can't believe doctors are still dishing this stuff out so eagerly. Screw birth control! I've had my two kids, I think I might just get my tubes tied... at 22... how sad is that? Anyway, I know some ppl love it and some hate it, but can I just put my two cents in and urge ppl not to take it. I know lots of people are okay with it, but the bad side effects just aren't worth it. And really, what's it matter if you're protected against pregnancy for 3 months? You're either bleeding the whole time or it hurts too much to bother anyway. For the frequency, just use a condom... lol, or get your tubes tied...

Smittenkitten,do not get your tubes tied.If you are sure about not having anymore kids, get a hysterectomy.Getting your tubes tied will make you bleed like the Hoover Dam.A really good friend of mine got her tubes tied 5 years ago.She said ever since she got it done, her mentrual flow is so heavy, she can't even hold in a tampon. She's getting a hyterectomy in November. She says she can't wait.

No reputable doctor will tell a woman to have a hysterectomy instead of tubal ligation (getting tubes tied) to prevent future pregnancy.

Complications from tubal ligations are rare, but it sounds like that's what happened to your friend.

A hysterectomy is a serious, invasive procedure only done as a last resort. Also, the ovaries themselves often need to be removed along with the uterus, which can essentially cause a premature menopause and all the accompanying health risks that entails. Tubal ligations are relatively easy and minimally invasive, often done by a laprascope, which requires a tiny incision.

From what you're describing, it's possible your friend also had a serious case of fibroids, which could have been what caused the excessive bleeding.

She told me her doctor said that it would have been better to get a hysertectomy because of the exessive bleeding. Her doctor told her that almost all of tubal ligation patients come back to get that done. She said she did't have any case of fibroids or anything else that resulted in the exessive bleeding. It's not complications that make you bleed like that,it's just what happens as the result from the procedure.

Good to note! I'll have to talk to my doctor about my options... But yeah, I didn't think a hysterectomy was something you could request either... Guess I'll find out at my appt.
