Default Red tones on blonde hair

How do you dye natural black hair to blonde?
Bleaching turns it yellow or orange.
How do you get rid of the red tones then make it golden blonde?

    I have light brown hair.
I just dyed my roots yesturday touch up's
then I dyed the whole head.
Now my light brown is golden blonde
    but my roots are red.

What should I do besides to the salon.
I want to fix it myself but need some advice.

    Is your hair naturally black?

If it's dyed black you needed to use a product that would of lifted as much black out as possible. the product is very damaging to your hair but it's all you can really do. Most hair stylists require clients to sign a release form when lifting out black so you're brave to try this on your own.

When you say you dyed your whole head....what color are you using and are you using a professional product or store bought?

go to sally beauty supply if there is one nearby. ask one of the sales people there about suggested products. anytime you're lightening your hair, you'll get red tones unless you use an "ash" color b/c the hair goes through certain stages to lighten. b/c at home products are so weak, they can't take your hair all the way from one stage to another. Either dye is a solid medium to dark ash brown and let it rest for a few days before deciding...or go to a salon....those would be my suggestions!

I suggest going to a salon definetley they can get things more evenly but if you do wanna try it at home lots of beauty stores have products that you can use as a rinse after shampooing to take out certain undertones, I usually use ash based and get like a blueish or greenish tint and get this color rinse takes all the other colors out.. im sure they have one for red undertones.. the yellowish orange color can be washed with tomato juice to get out but smells kinda nasty so make sure u use a nice smelling shampoo and conditioner after words, I also recomend the john frieda sheer blonde line, they have shampoos and conditioners that change your undertones into more champagne or dirty blonde colors.. I have the champagne one and it works really well.. they make your hair really soft after bleaching 2, and dont forget to moisturize, bleached hair gets very dry Neutrogena's Triple Moisture hair mask will keep it in par condition and its really chep, u get alot for ur dollar but remember if ur hairs really dark and your gonna change your color that drastically a salon is ur bestfriend they it will look soo much better.. hope that helps

If you are not sure what you are doing...then, you really need to save up some money and have a professional do it.

I had a girlfriend who thought that with all of the information that she had gotten on hair color, that she would be fine...but, when all was said and done...she had hot pink hair. She ended up having to go to a professional to have it re-done, and her hair looked like straw...

I always go to the salon to have my hair done. There are some things that I will cut corners on to save money (clothes, make-up, shoes, etc) but my hair is definitely not one of those things.

    Good luck!

sounds like the root touch up wasn't a high enough lift. If you don't want the red tones, you might have to do a double process-bleach then color. Also remember that color won't lift previous chemical color. That is why a lot of people end up with lighter roots. I would use a mild permanent hair color remover- loreal from sally beauty and use the method where you just mix with water and not activator. This will get you back to what you have as a base to work with. You may need to put a slightly darker color on to even things out, then eventually start adding highlights -best to let a pro do the highlights while you touch up your roots with the base color. Or- bleach the highlights through first, then put on a lighter base color. The key here is you are probable going to do some blending befor you can get totally even.

Oh, and invest in some really heavy conditioner. It took about 3-4 months to get my hair back to the way I wanted it after a similar incident- went dark-decided to go back light. And please excuse the typos tonight!

    I agree w/ you Venus!

I see my hair dresser every three weeks to a month. She gives me some discounts and now, finally even tints my brows, as well. ( I was looking for the perfect brow person since I moved to LA from San Francisco. It took me over a year).

I think hair is so important. Not just color, but texture and health. Whether your hair is long, short or in-between the guys love a healthy, shiny head of hair

    Cheers,

It's a must to let the hair have a break. I go from blonde to dark all the time, but not everyone can do that. I do my roots first, because i like them the lightest, but that is new hair, and may not grab colour as fast as older hair. So i find myself going through the red/orange colour too, i keep doing strand tests along the way, and when i hit the blonde i stop and wash.

Older hair will grab quickly, because it has some damage either from blow dryers curling or just age. The roots they say (don't hold me to this, but it works for me) should be done first if you have dyed very dark hair, or virgin hair, the rest after.

I agree, i would see a stylist...Don't ruin your hair.

PS, i use Loreal everything for my hair! After years of touch-ups all seems ok!

This is how I get my REALLY BLONDE hair..check out the gallery for my color.

I dyed my hair black a few years ago. I wanted it back blonde like 2 days later. I tried to COLOR it lighter. I ended up much like you. I finally had to go to a salon..where I learned that you really can't bleach with a color because your putting COLOR into the hair shaft. The home hair colors don't have a high enough developer to begin with. It takes 30 or 40 to get that white blonde effect. Well anyways..the girls at the salon said that I couldn't get any higher lift than that unless I did a what was called a HEAVY HIGHLIGHT..which means they pull almost every piece of your hair through a cap and highlight it. The highlight solution has TONER in it..to get rid of the brassiness. Remember if your going to be blonde DO NOT DO THE ENDS OF YOUR HAIR EVERYTIME. THEY WILL STAY BLONDE. If your going to color every month. Do the growth and ONLY in the last 5 minutes refresh the end color IF NEEDED. You probably know that already.

I have spent many days at SALLY'S they do sell everything you would need for an at home highlight. In the past couple years.. I have done 2 processess to get my platinum blonde. First I color using REVLON HIGH DEMENSION HAIR COLOR -01 ULTRA LIGHT NATURAL BLONDE - PRINCESS..always use the most ULTRA blonde you can get. It says it's a 10 minute color..but I leave it on for 45 minutes..I only put it on the inch or so of my roots. It takes that long for me to get the lift I like. I am not a brunette naturally I have a dark mousy brown blonde color..kack! Anyways..I have used Kaleidocolors tonal powder lightener. hightlight SMELLS GOOD TOO ..It comes in a blue packet OR Brown...One is a cool tone and one is a neutral tone..You can choose what you want the lady may help you..I use the brown packet for dark brown to light blonde hair..lightens up to 5 levels and adds neutral/beige tones...I believe the blue packet is the one for black to dark hair and adds those cool tones you want..they cost about $3.00..I use 40 Volume Developer about $4.00 but the directions says only a 20 volume pure white developer. They also carry 30 volume developer. Also they have plastic caps and brushes..ect..ASK the girl what you will need for a self highlight. I have a hair dryer like the ones at the salons ...you know the portable kind. I got it at Kmart for like $25.00. Anyways..Pull the top part of your hair through the cap (make sure it's dry hair) with the little hook that comes with it..NOT too much through the holes. Maybe you can have a friend help out. Mix the paste brush the paste on each strand NOT all the way to the ends..just the brassy parts. Cover your head with a little plastic shower cap from Sally's and You will then need HEAT to get the desired lift.. I have also used a hair dryer..but you have to be diligent because it can come out uneven. You can keep the stuff on for 5 minutes to 10 minutes..keep checking to get the desired lift you want..don't leave it on TOO long because it may get TOO light for you AND damage your hair ..I HAVE HAD COTTON CANDY MUSH HAIR!! You don't want that! You may not get every strand the first time. BUT the next time and the next time it will blend itself and look better and better. I'm pretty much a pro now..it takes some tweeking. But do get desired lift for darker hair I think the double process would be for you.. OF COURSE use A DEEP CONDITIONER AFTER THIS. I would use a spray on conditioner too.

    Well that's my two cent's
