    Default Dubious Fake Accents Caught!!!

There is this dancer at St. James, Nikita. I met her sitting at a group table. She spoke with a Slavic accent, so I said something to her in Russian. Her eyes and face lit up in understanding, but she did not answer me, so I went back to working my customer...

Later, I ran into her in the dressing room and she began speaking with me in a total "Boris and Natasha" type accent. I said something else to her in Russian and she acted like she understood, but did not answer, once again. After listening longer, I realized she is TOTALLY faking it, hahahahaha!! She didn't even understand when I asked her something in Czech, then Polish. Personally, I think she should have learned a few phrases, her accent is impeccable in the loud club.

It reminded me of Sigourney Weaver in that movie where she is a goldigger trying to be a Russian...remember that one, hahah!!

 I am not one to start trouble, so I did not call her on it. She is a super hot girl too, she does not really need the accent. Luckily, in Texas, european dancers are considered exotic, and not necessarily thought of as extra giving whores. :lipsrsealed:

So, anyone else have a story such as this one? What other kinds of unique things have you seen other strippers fake to distinguish themselves, besides the obvious ones?? :azn:

For some reason that I can't fathom, a lot of Korean and some Chinese "sex workers" of various sorts, including dancers, often claim to be Japanese. I speak Japanese a little bit and am always delighted to have any opportunity to practise using it, so I invariably try talking to them in Japanese. Since I look roughly like Santa Clauss (though that is not the way I dress!), this never fails to surprise an actual Japanese native speaker and to totally confuse a Korean or Chinese woman...who may not even recognize Japanese when they hear it. I have had a few fairly hilarious encounters along these lines.

I also worked with an Indian girl once who told Indian customers she was Pakistani. I think its because her own people would majorly look down on her even more than normal for stripping.

Its the same for bellydancers. The Egyptian bellydancers I know get a lot of crap by other Arabs because "they should know better than that."

Maybe the Japanese Geisha thing allures some men more??

Both of those possibilities have occurred to me...that they are somehow trying to avoid bringing shame (of course, I don't think there is any shame in what they are doing) on their own actual ethnic group by putting it off on the Japanese instead or because they think Japanese appeal more to the customers. However, I have never been able to figure out which it is. Almost invariably they refuse to discuss it further after they realize that they are "busted".

I do not think a fake accent is any different from fake boobs, or wigs, or high heels and colored contacts for that matter. It is performance--people are paying for fantasy. If the audience is willing to suspend disbelief, who cares if the great and mighty Oz is a little old person pulling levers in the corner.

"The great and mighty Oz..." Too funny.

Wwanderer, I think you were teasing those girls a bit. Some girls rely on the fact that, to most Caucasians, all Asians look alike and couldn't tell Japanese from Chinese from Vietnamese. You've been in Japan; I bet you already knew.

We had a blackanese (half black half Japanese) girl for a while. She started out with a British accent and claims that she was straight off the boat with English as her second language. I couldn't for the life of me figure out why she didn't pull the cutsy innocent act on guys, bat her eyes and speak a little Japanese. Turns out she grew up in Maine and North Carolina and spoke no more Japanese than I did. The English accent disappeared after a while.

We've got a fake russian at our club too.Really irritates me when girls do this type of thing because, I would think it would be so much harder to continue to lie than to just be yourself. Besides, she gets caught all the time in lies... and the lies become bigger lies. No one has any respect for her. I find that sad.

Just be yourself. You'll find you'll be more happier.

I agree with Monty - if using fake accents, fake hair, fake eyelashes, whatever helps sell more dances to more customers, more power to you! One of the most fun things about being a dancer is being able to be a different person - if I want to dress like a dominatrix one day and totally play that role I can - it's not what I would do in "real life", but that is the great thing about our job! We are all actresses in a way, so I say do what you need or want to do!

You're exactly right. I can often tell from their appearance and also the way they move, make eye-contact and so forth. Once you spend some time in Asia and become tuned in a bit, the differences leap out at you. To be honest, I sometimes string them along for a while talking (in English) about places in Tokyo and asking what they like to do there, what part of town they lived in and so forth...just for the fun of watching them try to change the topic or BS their way through it.

Sometimes I get fooled though. I met a dancer in Tokyo that was ethnically half Vietnamese and half Australian (Caucasian Australian I think) but who looked very Japanese to me. She was born in Australia and sounded like it, spoke almost no Japanese. She told me that lots of Japanese customers thought she was Japanese too. It was rather odd; she sure didn't look Vietnamese to me, but I don't see why she would have been lying about it.

something about the japanese thing...well this past semester, I took a class on Japanese culture specifically art and how women are portrayed in it. It was taught by a Vietnamese woman who lived in Japan for many years, however the way she would talk about subjects in the class seemed to make Japanese look like much more sexually open, and experimentational type of people. Perhaps if this is the stereotype that many other westerners have caught wind of, it adds extra eroticness (is that a word?) to the whole fantasy image that dancers may think makes them more desirable...

did that make sense? I think I may have confused myself.

No, she has very long straight light brown hair, and she always wears a zebra print cowboy hat. I think she is fairly tall but its hard to tell with the heels...I think she wears boots. Are you at St. James also??

Btw, I don't really make a point to affect a russian accent, but when ppl ask me where I am from, I will tell them. When they ask why no accent, I say I got to US as a teenager and studied to lose the accent. This way I don't have to fake it....

I say go for it girls, whatever it takes!! I'm not going to call her out to a customer or anything, I just didn't like to be bullshitted. It did not hurt my feelings though

Ok, as long as no one will know, because I don't even know what it sounds like. Hopefully no one will try to speak to me in those languages... maybe I should learn a catch phrase or something.

Having spent a considerable amount of time in the orient, this makes sense to me so perhaps I can shed a little light on this. There are many cultures throughout the orient that are not viewed with any respect by other cultures in the orient or abroad. For example, I had to take a business trip to Taiwan one time and another person in my party was Phillipino. She was a full legal citizen of the United States, but she didn't have a U.S. passport yet. All she had was her passport from the Phillipines which was still legal. The Taiwanese government would not allow her to enter the country even though she could prove she was a citizen of the United States. I actually heard an immigration officer from Taiwan tell her that "In spite of the fact that you are an American citizen, we need proof that you aren't from the Phillipines because we don't let those people in here". That pretty much was a direct quote. Chinese and Japanse governments view Phillipino people as basically lower life forms. Since so many Phillipino people are fleeing their country, nobody wants them, so they just make blanket policies to not allow them access to their countries. Korean people go through the same issue sometimes. With a Korean passport, it's virtually impossible to travel to any other asian country for the same reason. As a culture, they are heavily looked down upon. Many people from some of these countries understand this, so rather than talk to a customer and say they are Korean, they would rather say they are from Japan. They fear that by saying they are Korean, or Phillpino, or even Chinese that the customer will look at them with contempt and not be interested, so they say they are Japanse where they have less risk of that. It's quite sad, and it's not seen very often in the States because this scenario doesn't play itself out that frequently, but many people from those countries are just so used to believing that nobody will like them because of their ethnicity, that it's just easier to tell a lie.

That reminds me of 2 Arab guys at the club who told me they were French. I winked and said, "sure, habibi" and it was obvious they understood but they kept on playing it off. Probably trying to protect themselves from anti-arab sentiment......

Actually, because of the previous French colonial ties to their home countries, there are a LOT of Algerians, Moroccans, Tunisians, Lebanese, Syrians, Qataris, and Iraqis who have lived in France for several generations, and have French citizenship. Much like many immigrants to this country, they have lived in communities of their own ethnic group, but they consider themselves fully French as well. Since there is a relatively free flow of immigrants between Europe and the US, many people of all nationalities who have spent several years in France (-or Germany, the UK, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, or Canada) have later come to this country as students, workers, and professionals. Maybe those French Arabs who visited your club fit in that category.

There is one Algerian gentleman from France who was a regular at this club, we all knew him, he mostly just hung out. No, these guys were speaking to each other in Arabic. Maybe they had been in France for a long time, I know some Tunisian Jews who moved to Paris decades ago....

...its no big deal. I just like cultures and languages and pay attention to these kinds of things. We are all evolving as the world becomes a global community and its fascinating to see how we are dealing with the changes...meow!

I thought as much. I'm from Washington state, which has a large Asian population (Chinese, Vietnamese and Japanese, respectively). Anime and "Tai-Pan" being the extent of my exposure to Asian culture, those three still don't look anything alike to me, though Koreans keep me guessing.

Sometimes I get fooled though. I met a dancer in Tokyo that was ethnically half Vietnamese and half Australian (Caucasian Australian I think) but who looked very Japanese to me. Japanese have a reputation for intelligence, sophistication and beauty; the Vietnamese do not. It might be as simple as that. Or, it could be a reflection on Asian standards of beauty combined with their attitudes on racial mixtures. They seem to view half-Asians as mongrels, Japanese and Chinese especially (no one wants to be a quai-loh or gai-jin). However, fair skin has always been seen as a particularly refined symbol of beauty among all Asian cultures. She was likely happier to be thought of as a pale Japanese beauty rather than a half-breed.

I think everything you say above is correct, but I think I was unclear. This dancer (who danced under the name Venus when I met her last fall) did not claim to be Japanese; people just thought she looked Japanese, including Japanese men. In fact, she grew up in Australia and was culturally/socially/linguistically completely Australian...very laid back and unconcerned about appearances. In fact she seemed pretty contemptuous toward Japan and Asia in general, despite her heritage. I am sure she must have startled a lot of her Japanese customers!

The puzzle to me was how she could look so Japanese given her Vietnamese-Caucasian parents. One explanation that occurred to me was that she might have been misinformed about the actual identity of her biological father; in other words, maybe her father was really some Japanese man that her Vietnamese mother had an affair with...something like that. But who knows...maybe just some fluke.

Well, I am 1/2 Mexican and 1/2 Lithuanian. Most people guess that I am either 1.) Italian or 2.) Greek.

Sometimes they way that the genes mix create "looks" that you wouldn't think that would happen. It could very well have been that the mom had an affair, but it could just also be that the daughter just happened to have the right mix of genes that caused her to look the way that she does.

There is one girl at my club who is 1/2 African and 1/2 Irish...she looks more Italian than anything...she has lightly browned skin, dark chestnut hair with huge ringlets, dark eyes...delicate features...she's very beautiful...but, I would never have guessed that she was African/Irish.

No, she has very long straight light brown hair, and she always wears a zebra print cowboy hat. I think she is fairly tall but its hard to tell with the heels...I think she wears boots. Are you at St. James also??
No, I'm not at St. James. I was thinking you were in Austin, TX because of another thread. Sorry

Sometimes they way that the genes mix create "looks" that you wouldn't think that would happen.
Yes, that could very well be it; I have seen such cases too.

An irrelevant aside: Thinking about this dancer always gives me a mild chuckle remembering the good time we had goofing with the staff of a couple of restaurants where I took her for a "dohan" (dinner date). The waitor or hostess or whoever would invariably ignore me and address her in Japanese, but then I would reply in (my poor but usable) Japanese and explain that she only spoke English. Eyes widened, mouths falling open in surprise! But even after they absorbed this info, when they returned to the table, they had a tendancy to look confused about to whom they should speak and in what language.
