LOL! Lexi, I'm feelin' ya on this one. I get the EXACT same attitude from some people. I was born in Africa but was raised in Britain. I have dual nationality. I can say ''I'm African'', but then I get those who say ''You don't really look African (Because I'm light skinned!! I can pass for birracial unless I've been in the sun too long), you don't sound African you lived in UK for years, you're British''. When I say I'm British, I get ''You don't look British, you weren't born here, you're name is foreign, you're African''. Grrrrr!!! It does my tits in. It's never in a racist light, I'm lucky to have encountered minimal racism in all my years, but it's just plain annoying.

Now I don't know why I posted this too, I guess because you guys were airing similar experiences

Customers ask me every day where I'm from...They say
i have an island accent, but I think the sound systems in clubs drown out the high and/or low notes in my voice.....Plus when my hair is left curly , I look more "island". I think with a few drinks intheir systems the guys just portray whatever their fantasy is onto me, cause I have a plain old clear and crisp Northern accent.

The sheer hypocracy of these distinction is amazing. I work with people from all over. A person whose ancestors and he were born in Morocco is told he is not African-American. Yet at the same time, someone born in Spain (and ancestors) is hispanic. I even worked with an ethnically Chinese person born in Libya. That gets confusing.
