This is funny, I was thinking of starting the exact same thread. At my last two dental visits my dentist told me my wisdom teeth need to come out, I haven't even made an appointment yet. I'm scared. They look like they are growing in fine...

Anyway, sorry I don't have anything helpful to say, but I also will be looking forward to what the other members on this board have to say.

I really depends on how bad they are. I was at the dentist getting a crack tooth fixed a few years ago. The doc said I need my wisdom teeth needed to be taken out (they were getting cavities). He took and x-ray and he did it himself, didn't have to go to an oral surgeon. He pulled three one day and came back the next week for the fourth. The only thing that hurt was my jaws from holding my mouth open and having him pulling really hard. I got a persciption for pain killers and never used them. Guess I was just lucky. Never was out of commision.
But if you have to go to a surgeon for this you willl have stiches in your mouth and will probably cause swelling.

had mine out when i was 19. no swelling afterwards, and not too much pain. discomfort, yes. but i had a great time for a few days on the codeine they gave me. my advice is to set aside a few days in case you are feeling poorly, get some movies or books, and relax during the recovery.

Wisdom teeth. Where do I begin. I have fairly good teeth and always postponed getting them taken out. Finally had it done while I was in my late 30's. It should be done from age 16 to 20.
Early 20's is probably OK. Finally the one that had not poked through became infected or abcessed. In a not so bad procedure the one tooth was pulled out, and the oral surgeon (who is different than a general dentist) said my other three should come out.

I waited two more years and finally on of them got a cavity and I figured nows the time. I went in and sat on the bench, kind of like and assembly line waiting for my turn in the oral extraction room which looked a bit like an operating room in a hospital.

The other people on the bench looked at me. I looked at them.
Kind of like, "What are you in for?"

They were all teenagers from 16 to 20 years old max. That was my first hint I was out of time sync with modern dental procedures involving wisdom teeth.

He gave me alot of oral anesthetic. You have your choice go go out entirely and in retrospect maybe I should of chose that alternative.

I didn't feel pain until about three hours after the procedure so it won't exactly hurt. But it's not a pleasant experience either.
It was like somebody was cracking walnuts in my mouth except it was my teeth. It's a mini demolition of a concrete building foundation except its your teeth and roots. Part of your teeth are jackhammered out and then hauled away.

The first one went OK. The second one seemed to take alot longer
and really bothered me. When he started the third, I said
No more I can't take this! Let's reschedule.

Like a practiced stripper going for the VIP room gig. To my surprise he pushed me down strapped me back in and said, "No you don;'t!
We've got to get this done and it's almost out."

He didn't let me leave and it was done.

Tip: While I was able to drive to "Yank em and Crank em Oral Surgeons" you shouldn't and I couldn't drive home. Someone will have to pick you up. make sure you can leave your car if you are driving there yourself.

I spent the time from 11:30 A.M. to 4 p.m. on the floor of my upstairs bathroom lying next to the toilet spitting out blodd and changing dressing guaze. Tip #2. Get a hardcover book and pre place it near the toilet, along with a bottle of water to drink. (Insulated Thermos is a good idea.) You won't want to eat anything for awhile.

I had as a book, "As Thousands Cheer- The Biography of Irving Berlin." This was not the best choice in books, but to this day
I know all the Irving Berlin songs because of that book when I hear then on July 4th. The book had been given to me and I didn't know it was the only thing I could read for five hours.

As I heal relatively quickly after five hours I wa fine. Went to work the next day, and in two or three days got the stiches out and was fine.

This is the thing to do when you are 17 during summer vacation not when you are 38 and have to be at work somewhere.

My tooth problems declined markedly after the extraction and no futher pain in my wisdom teeth area so I guess it was worth it.

Basically if you don't do it by the time you hit 50 your teeth will rot out even if you do brush back there.

This is something I will always remember. One of those things in life that you force yourself to do.

    OMG niceguy!!!!!
thanks a ton! (can you hear my sarcasm?!) nah, thanks for sharing, but that wasn't too hopeful. for my teeth, all 4 are grown in, but are beginning to get cavities. I'm going to be totally sedated (thru IV) and I'm going to an oral surgeon. Sort of nervous, but ready so I can just chill for a few days. hopefully the pain med will be good too...LOL. I think I'm getting vico-profen since I'm allergic to acetaminophen (vicoden). hmmm......

The general is better than the local if you are having four done at once. Under the general you won't feel anything, or try to leave the chair like I did. Also your profile states you are in your 20's.
You might have a bit of a disconnect with all the high school kids waiting like I did. Pick a good book in advance, and more than one
    if your recovery takes longer.
Comment you need to do this or your teeth will just get worse as you get older.

I had to have all 4 of my wisdom teeth pulled at once and the doctor put me on an IV drip and the gas mask to knock me out. I didnt feel or remember a thing. When i woke up i was laying on a couch at the end of a hallway in the office. (i dont know how they got me there) and i had a big diaper looking ice pack on my head . My mouth didnt start hurting till like an hour after i got home and then i started freaking out. They told me not to spit and the first thing i did was panic when my mouth filled with blood and i started spitting it out in to a tissue. My face was pretty swollen for about a month and a half. My advice for when you run out of painpills is to take aspirin and tylenol together. It is the only way to get rid of extreme pain when you dont have the good stuff. And if you smoke, cut down now before the surgery or you will crave one when its over and give yourself dry socket. Your not supposed to suck on anything because it will dislodge the blood that is supposed to be clotting in the empty holes. You cant let them dry out, it hurts like hell.

Funny you should mention that, I had my top right one extracted a week ago Monday (stiches just came out two days ago).

There was a filling, and a cavity under the filling. Worst case was him poking it with the pointy thing and saying "Does this hurt?" Answer: "YES, you &^)(**&)*(^&%! {unmentionable)!!!"

Just slightly painful with three shots of novocaine.

    The rest was really easy.

Try Vioxx for the pain. Its advertised for arthritis pain, but the FDA has also approved it for dental pain. It worked great. Ask your regular doc if he has free samples so you won't have to pay for it.

Good luck hun. Be prepared to eat soft foods for a while. Omlette....peas.... and best of all Ice Cream and Chocolate Milkshake...yummmm!

to answer your question, yes, my teeth were impacted and one side of my face stayed swollen longer because they had to break one of my wisdom teeth to get it out. It is normal to have alittle bit of blood pooling in your mouth, they will give you a bunch of gauze pads to soak it up with. You just cant wipe at the blood or spit it out. you have to be really gentle with your mouth. It would be a good idea to sleep with your head more elevated than usual at night to prohibit choking on spit or blood. People have diferent experiences and they try to make them sound like it wasnt that bad. But believe me, your gonna hurt and your gonna lose some weight when you do the liquid diet. i suggest campbells nacho cheese soup (just work around the pimentos) , lots of yogurt without chunks, beef and chicken broth (to keep up your sodium intake) , water, juice, gatorade, blended sphagettios (actually quite good), and some instant mashed potatoes that come in the little cups, and or the new cup of soups that you heat and drink. If you need anymore info or help with this just ask, i will be here. good luck.

none of mine had broken skin or were impacted, but I got them taken out about 2 months ago b/c I noticed my bottom teeth were starting to shift and I have never needed braces and didnt want to start now!

I ended up having 4 dry sockets, which is when you dont form blood clots in the holes for them to heal, so I had to go to the dr. everyday to get packings in the holes. Because of this I didnt really have stitches in, so I have these holes in my mouth that are still healing (not painful, just there... sometimes food gets caught in them). Overall pain was minimal, except for the fact that I am allergic to Codeine, Vicodin, and Hydrocodone. My nurse was a bitch and told me they wouldnt give me Perkaset (sp?) even though my dr. later told me he was never aware of my problem and would have given me something (ugh!!!)

I'd say give yourself 4 days off, because bruising and swelling varies from person to person. (I barely showed anything, whereas one of my friends entire jaw lookd green and purple.) Also, I'm not positive on this, but I think I remember them telling me that the 3rd day was the worst for swelling and bruising.

Good Luck... it's not as horrible as people describe, and if you've ever had any other surgeries, this one's a breeze.

Sweeties, I had the best luck with mine. Four teeth were pulled out at once. I had no problems at all save for vomiting some blood the next morning (it pools in your tummy from draining down the back of your throat.) I actually felt great after that!
If you are truly pain-phobic, pay the extra money for general anasthesia. The good part to putting off the surgery for a while is that the teeth have a chance to erupt out of the gumline, reducing the work the dentist has to do to extract them. I BEG you to just drink broth and water for the first two days, you can get horrible infections from solid food getting stuck in the sockets.
There's a lot of scary stories here, but mine was great, less painful than a lot of regular dental surgeries.

I had my three done in the chair at the start of the month. I took about a week and a half off work because of the swelling (its hard to be sexy when you look like a chipmunk).

Mine are still hurting a bit now *pout*.

But whatever you do... read about "dry sockets" on the internet before you go... basically for the first 24 hours after surgery blood clots are trying to form in the bone, and CANNOT drink hot drinks, rinse your mouth out or drink through a straw as this can dislodge the clot.

I, of course, did not know all this and upon getting home promptly rinsed out the blood and had a nice cup of hot tea

i had all mine taken out at 14. (late bloomer with everything else, of course.. d'oh). read up about dry sockets, and enjoy your painkillers. they gave me demerol, so if you're not allergic ask about that. i'm pretty sure it's just an opiate, no acetaminophen. the swelling lasted for 5 days or so, and the bruises lasted about another week, but makeup should help with that. it's not that bad, really. you'll be glad you went through with the surgery. good luck!

When I had mine out (age 20), I paid double the lowest price I found (no insurance) to go to the best guy in town. It was worth it...I had no pain (the percocet helped , no swelling, and besides trouble eating, was ready to go within 2-3 days.

You know how you'd look around for the best surgeon possible to do a BA or other cosmetic surgery? I'd recommend doing the same with your oral surgeon.

okay, update. I got 'em out this morning. besides sedation and all that, it took them like 10 min., which is unreal. mine were easy, all grown in, but had cavities. I still have gauze in my mouth which to me is the worst part. nothing like tasting your own blood. anybody else dig the nitrous oxide like I did?????? OMG, I hate to sound weird, but it was almost like the beginning of an orgasm!
