Default Documentary

I am an 18 year old student who has been intrigued with dancing since I young. I have been recently found intrest in Exotic Dancing. I wish to get any information you are willing to offer. I am doing a survey/non-biased documentary in my area and am in contact with the only 'one' strip club in my area. They have Strippers who travel down and are gone within a few days. If any one has any information, or questions please feel free to post or email me. I am sorry if i offend anyone in this and please help me understand if I do. My goal of this would be to justify Exotic Dancing as a career, and bring light to the topic in a postive way.
Thank you for any infomation you have to offer. I would eventually like to add a survey to this website if that is feasable.

Maybe I have PMS and am being over sensitive, but why would anyone need to "justify Exotic Dancing as a career?" I don't need anyone's justification. It is a career.

Someone tried this kind of questioning before on SW and our advice to her was DANCE if you want to know about it. I'm not trying to be a jerk, but having an 18 year old - who's never done it - tell me she wants to justify it, rubs me the wrong way.

No..Nadirah ..I don't think you have PMS..WE as dancers have to put up with the "regular" folk putting us down like we are doing some kind of horrific thing by being dancers..SO YES WE ARE TOUCHY . I don't think this was meant as a slam..but she obviosly viewing us through those "regular" eyes. LOTS of people find us interesting like we are freekish or somethng..lol. IT's just a job but the world just can't or won't see that for what it is. MANY, MANY people want to write about us..I as I said in another post..One could not possibly write a correct version of the "exotic dancer" world. ONE has to LIVE IT..the write it down with the passion, and truth it deserves. One could never, write about my experiences or lump all of our experiences together and make a book or documentary about it and have it come out without some hollywood stereotype version. I think if that is her in the pic..I assume the blonde..She should just go strip somewhere..BUT to me it looks like shes already a dancer.

I for one wish people would just STOP writing about it! Wanna know something about strippers? Come and spend an hour in the V.I.P. w/ me nd I'll tell you a tall one, but all these blabbermouths are killing my money and I'm sick of it!

I miss the days when visiting a strip club was a dirty secretive little thrill, and I was renumerated accordingly. Now that just any old body has their hand in the cookie jar, the value has gone down, ya know?

OMG I TOTALLY AGREE!

I didn't want to be rude or mean due to me not dancing but how dare that girl come on here asking for some clarity and to justify what we all do?

It would be like saying oh I am writing a book about working at McDonlads and was wondering if you could justify that please?

I say go in a club get hired and go from there otherwise don't worry about what we do right? If you have to look for the justify in it then it isn't for you different strokes for different folks!

I, personally, think that a documentary would be cool. However, in my experience, they always take out the "good strippers" and use the drug-addicted, man-hater, extras lover, air head (better for sales, I guess). I do not think that I would be interested in giving my story to anyone else for the cause. I agree with everyone else. You cannot write about anything from an "outsiders" point-of-view. If you want to write/film stuff about stripping, then you're going to need to get yourself into dancing and get the "inside scoop". Then write your story based on your own perceptions and yourself.

Good luck!

I didnt mean to offend any of you. What I am trying to do by this documentary is to STOP the steriotype that is put amoung all exotic dancers. Alot of people have a set image of what a Stripper is and I want to Break that. Whenever I bring this into a conversation everyone says they are dirty.. And i must disagree.

stripper_kay,

You have to understand that we hear this ALL THE TIME. Tons of people think that they are the great white knight for strippers everywhere, and that they will break the stereotypes for us, and show the world what great people we are!

Thanks, but no thanks. We're generally quite a confident and self-possessed lot, the stereotype, though a bother, is also part of the fun . And besides that, not being in the industry, no matter how valiant your efforts were you'd probably screw it up and we'd get mad.

But feel free to browse around, you'll probably find the answers to lots of your questions...

My thoughts exactly!! I don't think anyone has pms, I have been a dancer for almost 10 years and in that time, I have had to explain myself and defend myself to people that don't know anything about the industry. It's the closed minds that believe that I need to "justify" my career choice.

I"m not sure why you think you are going to succeed with this.. not to be mean or anything, but I"ve been dancing since I was 17 and I can tell you that the list will continue to grow.. and we have hollywood to thank on that. All those documentaries, books and movies about women like us are completely wrong.. yes, there are a few of the junkies out there, but honestly, browse around this site.. we are real people with lives... and to each their own about their opinions of the women who do this as a living..

as I always say to those to become offensive: "Let's see you do what I do for fifteen minutes and see if you survive the cut."

Gynger, I think you nailed it. I don't think a rebuttal to the Hollywood portrayal could have been said any better. Although I'm obviously not a dancer, I have been working in this industry for many years and now more than ever. As a non-dancer, I've learned by meeting literally thousands of dancers that your experience is mostly correct. There are always going to be a few exceptions to the rule and I do know many exotic dancers who do meet the stereotype. Those are the minority though, and yet it's that minority is what the Hollywood portrayal usually focuses on. Why? Because sadly it's what sells and it's what people want to hear. It's the same reason why the "cat stuck in a tree" story never runs on the news, but "Strip club raided...two dancers arrested for drug possestion" does, even though there may have been 150 dancers on shift that night at that raid. That's less than 2%. Hell, you could go into any office place with that many employees and find 2% of them with drugs. It's just that with exotic dancers, it's sensationalistic, and unfortunately that's what makes documentaries interesting enough to get ratings. I wouldn't be surprised at all if someone who really did want to do an honest documentary about the industry wouldn't be able to do an honest portrayal once they actually worked as a dancer for a while. Why? Because they would realize their pre-existing views of the industry would be mostly wrong. So they produce a documentary knowing it's a lie because it would get ratings. And even if they would produce an honest documentary about the industry, they probably would get looked down upon because it would be so contrary to what the 1000 previous movies and documentaries of the industry said.

Okay..Thanks for all your input...As i see this topic is obviously not one that is easily disscussed. This documentary is not a huge hollywood production by any means as i live in a small hick town in BC canada. You have arousen a good point as to the fact that maybe if it ever were to sell, the ratings wouldnt be that interesting because there is no drugs or whatnot. I got this idea from a Cosmo mag about Exotic Dancers who had lives aside from there danceing. And thats more of the part i was interested in. I am just trying to understand but maybe I fell i am not given the cahce. It may be even frowned apon <by those assholes> by so called 'justifying' and i dont mean that in a bad way as to anything you ladies r doin. I think its purfectly fine, but there are those idiots out there. I think it is a regular job as is any, but i belive the alluring thing about it the fact that it is sometimes looked down apon, and the question is why?

Quite honestly, this is what I would LOVE to see..

A real life series.. you know, like what MTV did with Real world only with dancers... have like four of them, only they don't live together, they film them all separately with all the things that take place in their day to day lives. I think people would be very surprised at what they'd see.

I know at my house they would definately think, "Holy shit... " I have more caoss at my house than I care to with kids, pets, neighbor kids, school functions, a part time job and dancing on top of it all.

I realize that everyone is always going to have that "stereotype" image but it would really be nice if for just once, someone portrayed this business in a positive manner. I mean, I make in one night what most of my friends make in a week or more... the business is good when its good, bad when its bad, and no one can really complain about the flexibility and setting your own schedule. I think that if something like that were to be out there for others to see, more respect would be there, and less stereotypical close minded crap.

Just my two cents.

I'm with you, Gynger!! I have $150 and a video camera...when do you want to start?

Seriously, though. The show would still suck because everyone would think that we are snorting coke and shooting heroine as soon as the camera goes dark. You'll never get through to someone who wants to believe the old ways. What they want to see are the catfights in the dressing rooms and catty, dim-witted, drugged out, drunk strippers fighting over customers. Think "Jerry Springer at the Cathouse". That would be the only show people would want to watch, because it's the only show that reinforces their idea of what a stripper is like.

I have people who find out I am a stripper (parents at my daughters play-groups) and are shocked because I am "so normal". It's nice that no one has changed their attitudes towards me...but, it's still funny to see their reactions.

I get the "You are too real" line.... but I know what you are saying... its funny to see reactions, sad to see the close mindedness of those who refuse to believe other than the stereotype.

Stripper Kay - I admire your ambition. There is nothing wrong with having a dream. I think that working as a dancer in BC would be a great idea. Also keep looking at the post's here on stripper web.
I don't know if you would want to put your focus on dancing in the U.S.A. or Canada or maybe a few different countries. It is a very complex and interesting industry.
