It depends on the location.
I stayed in a self-contained one bedroom apartment with ensuite for $60 per night (over 7 nights) in Cairns. This worked out good value for money as it provided me with a kitchette (sink, toaster, electric jug, stove, microwave and fridge). This meant I kept my food expenses low.
In Melbourne, I'm considering staying at backpacker type accommodation (with shared bathroom and kitchen facilities).
Personally I budget $60 per night.... and am open to backpacker accommodation (shared/dorm rooms).
I look at location (is it close to the club so my travel expenses are low or nil due to being in walking distance) then facilities.
Ultimately I would love to stay in self-contained one bedroom apartments like I did in Cairns. It was really nice!Yet not always practical or affordable.
I try to keep my expenses low so my profit-margin is high.

Thank so much, but I still have another question how do you search for this Apartments and/or backpacker type (I guess is dumb question- sorry) do you search on- line?
Try this site. www.hostelz.com
They have hostels everywhere with pictures and personal accounts from people who have stayed there. A bit of advice from a traveling friend: bring some earplugs for sleeping during the day.
Good luck!

On the earplugs side of things: if you just need help falling asleep... walkman with relaxing music. I'm one of those that only needs earplugs if their is a person in the same room snoring. If it is just general noise, I'm okay... or will resort to my walkman.
Also make sure you pack a mask. This will help you block out the sun or any light... and psychologically should help you sleep easier. I know mine has
Last but not least, make sure all your luggage is secure: buy small combination locks. I havn't had much trouble with stealing of items but if you do find that you are sharing a room with one or many people... and you don't know the other person... it is a good precaution.
Whilst that website is handy... I found using google.com with search terms (if searching for accomm. in Melbourne): Melbourne Budget Accommodation helped.
