    Default cosmotology

I'm sorry this doesn't directly pertain to exotic dancing but I saw someone say on SW that quite a few members have cosmotolgy lisenses. Anyway I'm thinking about going to cosmotology school since I like hair, beauty, makeup, and working with people. Anyway since school is expensive and I'll be spending my time in school instead of working, I was wondering if someone could tell me about the cosmotology field before I decide whether to invest my time and money in it. Are there very many jobs available? Is the typical salary enough to live and save on or just about enough to live on? Is it hard to get a job in a regular salon rather than a quickie place like SuperCuts. Thanks so much. Any help would be much appreciated.

I am currently in beatuy college and actually my hair dresser got me into the college. She owns her own hair salon and it took her about 3 yrs. or so to attain it.

Yes, you will make great money. In fact one of my fellow students just got hired as a make up artist for the porn stars in L.A.

How you get hired in the upscale salons is you do your Work Experience and they see your work and if they like you and your style then they offer you a postion. I am in Sacramento California so I don't know if its the same for you.

Its great to invest in and still dance as well. My college I attend is Frederico's Beauty College its the best you can go to and cost me a pretty penny also 12,000.

Thanks for the reply honeygymgirl. That is so amazing that someone could own a salon within 3 years! I'm in Boston. I've wanted to be a cosmopolgist but my boyfriend has 2 women in his office who have cosmotology liseneses doing boring office work for not much money-- which got me really worried and I started to really rethink cosmotology. My boyfriend asked them why they weren't working as cosmotologists and they said they didn't want to work somewhere like Supercuts where you really have to rush with the costomer.

That's also cool you know make-up artists- I've been into makeup for a long time and have all the Kevyn Aucoin books and the new Linda Mason one. I don't think I could be a professional make-up artist though because I think most of the work is in CA for motion pictures and some in NY.

Thanks for the tips about keeping a portfolio of work and going to a cosmotology school with a good reputation. Anyway thanks and you got me thinking. I'm going to do some more research on cosmotology and really think about going to school. Good luck with your career!

If anyone's interested - I have some cool lines of dancer make up and outfits that offer a good commission deal - my make up artist reps the products, and gets dancers in our area to sell them in the clubs.

The deal is simple, you sell some stuff, you keep a %, and the person that got you into the business makes a smaller %...no tricks or games.

Email me at [email protected] if you want more info on this...one of our senior reps makes a complete living off just this..

Hi, I am too in cosmetology school in New Jersey. It's expensive but it's worth the money if you LOVE hair, fashion and make-up. At the moment for side work I do make-up for weddings, proms and any special occasions, which you really do not need a license for. As for cosmetology, there are so many fields you can go too...you can be a stylist, colorist(which is good to know if your in a salon), manager of a salon, make-up artist, work for movie productions and so much more. It takes alot of dedication and patience. Hope this helps ya!!

Cosmotolog is definately worth the investment. I would wrok in a salon part time while in school though. some girls when they get out of school have a fear of cutting hair and that is one reason why they take boring office jobs. Many people go then never do it.

You have to work for 2 years before you are able to get your license to own your own shop. Which in my mind is worth it. You need the experience and you must build clientle. Your clients will pay you well. If and when you do own your own place it is best to get a salon on a busy street where you have walk ins. This is where you make money at first. Also when you work right after school be sure it is a busy place.

You will enjoy it. I do. I also have an esthetcian(sp) license. I'm tired sorry for the mispellings.
