Default silly people and their stripper stereotypes!!

I've got a lil one at home and am addicted to internet boards, so of course I'm a member of several momma-boards, as well as my fave board of all, SW

So on one of my boards, there was a thread entitled "is there anything you don't want your children to be when they grow up?" This board in particular is a super-crunchy, au naturel type board (there's an ongoing thread of mommas that don't use shampoo, for example). This thread grew to 5 pages, and I counted 23 variations on the sex industry. Most of them said clumped multiple things together, like stripper/escort/hooker/porn. I was impressed that a couple of other mommas actually protested, clarifying the differences between those things. And then came this post:

"I've known lots of strippers, and it's not a glamorous life, from what they say. None of them chose the profession willingly; they were pimped into it by men who forced them to stay there. They didn't make very much money: minimum wage + tips, and they also had to rent the stage during the times they were dancing. Sex with club owners was often a prerequisite for hire."

I HAD to set the record straight with that one. And so far haven't been flamed for it. *whew*

    I was just amused.

    LOL, Destiny!
I am a parent too, and I can tell you what I dont want my daughter to be when she grows up. How about an ignorant, judgmental and stereotypical jackass!

Heh.. Good answer, Nikki. I totally agree.

My kids can be any damn thing that they choose, and I'll support them. The only thing I won't support is hate, close minded-ness, ignorance, or judgmental individuals. I shape them into the adults they will become, so I'm confident they'll make the right decisions.

This is one of the many reasons I don't visit the mommy boards.

This momma must not know that many strippers. Just take a look at most of the girls on this site. With what most strippers make or at least many of the ones on this site, they can afford rent and other such bills many times over monthly. I'm beyond when it comes to my tolerance for this misinformed ignorance. Once again, I'm disappointed by hearing of yet another person who missunderstands strippers/dancers. You can't just slap a label on someone without getting to know the individual person for who they really are. Stripper=Whore is one of the most incorrect judgement calls I know. Many of the girls I've seen posting here are very sweet, loving people-some with kids to take care of. Sometimes I really wish people would wise up to how strippers/dancers really are. Sadly, that is most likely asking for too much.

This sounds familiar. Is this board, by chance, MomsWhoThink or the more notorious breastfeeding board (which shall go unnamed)? I recall circumcision threads that reached 26 pages and porn threads that went on for 17 months.

In some cases that is true. For example, women who are illegally smuggled into this country. (There have been a few posts about this here on sw.) Let's face it most of the people who own these clubs are not nice guys; and they do break the labor laws because the corrupt cops and politicians are more than happy to take bribes.
However, there are plenty of women who are happy to have the opportunity to make a good living wage with out a super strict schedule. There are also a lot of women who have chosen to do this job because it is so difficult to get a "regular" job with a 9 hour shift, 5 days a week at a low- but reliable wage.
I think that stripping can be an excellent opportunity for women who are very confindent and ok with the risks associated with the job.

That attitude really pisses me off too!!!!!!! But I think what really shits me the most are patronising customers who hold this type of viewpoint. They aren't too common thank goodness, but I've certainly met plenty of them now! They come in and start talking down to the girls by saying how bad it must be to be in our position etc... Yet, when you ask them what the f*** they're doing in the club suporting the industry if they really think it's that bad, they tend to get abit defensive or lost for words. Idiots!!! Occasionally I've been known to grow from my short 5'3 to 10' tall and 6'wide due to customers like this, lol!

I would have said women who work 9-5 jobs while they have young kids are only doing it to blow the boss without their husbands knowing. You know how competitive the rat race is. You just KNOW that the lady making the money at her desk job is giving "incentives" for her raises. I think it would have been funny to see the reaction to that one. LOL

People who find out that I am a stripper, usually stand there wide eyed with the jaw to the ground. "But, you look 'too normal/clean/wholesome to be a stripper. You don't do drugs or drink any liqour. How do you work with all of those drug-addicts?" They are usually pretty shocked to hear that the girls who dance are pretty much just like me. The ones who are drug addicts and trouble-makers are out there...but they are the minority, not the majority.

Of course, as always, you see the words going in one ear and out the other.

OMG if everyone knew just how true this really is....

From working in a corporate environment, I saw my fair share of incentives... one instance stands out the most. I worked on a project for six months in hopes of getting a promotion, only to be passed up and the promotion given to another girl....

Two weeks later.. that girl was seen with the boss at a sporting event, all nice and chummy...

    Still pisses me off.

This thread was on MDC. And I was impressed with the few girls (four or five of us, I think) that popped out of the woodwork to protest the stereotypes. One momma responded to us with something along the lines of "it's nice to know that it's not all as bad as it seems - I guess if my daughter worked as a stripper the way you've been describing, instead of as (previous poster) described, I'd have to tell her to go for it!!" So that was neat.

I wrote a big ole long response taking her stereotypes apart one by one, and did have to admit that some of those things happen, such as the smuggling. And I also made sure to say that the "dirtier" stuff can and does happen at some clubs - the ones that most strippers I know would never touch with a ten foot pole!!

Well, I know that one first hand. The last company I worked for, the head boss' right hand gal (and, who knows, left, too?) said she made $50,000/year. Ok, so she's walking around with authentic LV bags...Manolo Blahnik shoes, takes 5 vacations a year that last 2 weeks a piece, drove a brand spanking new Beemer 7 series, and bought a condo that was worth $750,000. ALL of this on a mere $50,000 a year. Hmmmm...sure. Well, my suspicions were confirmed when me and another girl walked into the boss' office after hours to make sure the alarm was set. I think I've been traumatized and will never again be the same. Maybe I should have sued for "sexual harassment". Since he was married...I wonder if he would have just paid up. LOL

Anywho...there are more women who have "under the desk" jobs in the corporate world than people are willing to admit.

The Far Out Right LOVES to promote & spread negative
propaganda about The Adult Industry as a whole and
stripping in particular. Are there some strippers who
are exploited by their boyfriend/pimps ? Yes, but it's
certainly not the norm. Do a few club-owners pressure
dancers for sex ? Sadly, yes.But again, most do not.
There are a lot of ignorant people out there with and
without agendas who don't know the first thing about
the skin-biz. A few have open minds and can be
educated. The rest just aren't worth your time.

The word stripper applies to too many different types of jobs.

    I see it used for:

    * Girls who dance partially or fully nude on stage
    * Girls who dance on stage and do lapdances
    * Girls who do parties that involve sexual activities

I've only been to a couple of bachelor parties, but one of them had two girls who after they got done doing each other wanted to do the bachelor and guests for money right there at the party. They were called 'strippers' by everyone even though what they do has almost no relation to what girls who dance in stripclubs do.

I would assume that most married women, who don't go to clubs themselves, only have knowledge of what a stripper is or does from stories of what went on her husband's bachelor party.

A person perform sex acts is not a stripper, they are a prostitute

"Uhm.... in another post you said you had a husband "

No I didn't, someone else did. I doubt very much I'll ever have a husband until the right combination large amounts of alcohol and legislative changes takes place in my state in the future...

"A person perform sex acts is not a stripper, they are a prostitute"

That was the point I was making. There are a lot of girls who are called or call themselves strippers, but what they actually are or do is very, very different. I almost always refer to my friends as dancers.

Wow Venus and Gynger! You have made me realize just how niave I was. I worked in offices for so long. I worked my ass off too. It is so frustrating when you see people who are less qualified getting all of the glamour and the glory.
At least with stripping all of the corruption is totally obvious - even to super niave people like me.
