    Default Navel Piercing

I have been seriously thinking about getting my navel pierced. I just think the belly button jelwlery is so hot. I work hard on my stomach and get alot of compliments from that area on my body so I would love to enhance it with some sparkly jewlery. The questions I have is I heard it takes 6 months to heal. Is that true. So I would have to have the same piece of jewlery in for six months. That means I couldn't take it out until half a year later? That seems like a very long time. Also I get airbrushed tanned. Would that interfear and cause complications? Anybody with first hand information would help me loads thanks guys!!

It depends on each person. Healing time can be faster or slower. But, hunny, have you ever heard of your body taking 6 months to heal anything?? No, it doesn't take 6 months to heal. More like a few weeks (at least for me). I was changing jewelry within 3 weeks. I had friends who changed jewelry within the week after they got theirs done. The most important part of getting your navel pierced is keeping it clean. I carried around alcohol swabs and neosporin and cleaned my navel every single time I went into the washroom, or someone touched my belly area. I was extremely "protective" of that piercing...and I was the only one of 7 of my friends who never had an infection.

As for the tanning, it may interfere within the first couple of weeks since the tanning solution will most likely run into the area. You could always try it once and see what happens. Make sure that you clean the ring and your belly button with alcohol immediately after the procedure. You may want to call the salon you have it done at. They should know more. Sorry...I had my navel pierced for about 9 years...so spray tans weren't around then.

Yep, navel piercings can take forever to heal. Some people have no problems at all and heal quickly, others seem to have on-going problems from day 1.
Be sure to seek out a good professional piercer, unfortunatly alot of the peircers out there are not!(Guidelines here if you need them - ) And follow the after-care instructions religiously even if it sucks having to wear boring jewlery for a while!!! Better that than having a weeping pussey scarred up mess!
    Good luck (-:
Below is from BME zine which in my opinion is the site that provides the best piercing and body mod information on the net.

    Navel Piercing

A navel piercing is a piercing placed through the rim of the navel. This piercing can be done anywhere there is a defined fold or "lip", though some placements tend to be easier to heal than others. The most common placement is on the top ridge of the navel, followed by the inverse navel piercing which is placed on the bottom ridge of the navel.

Ideally, a navel piercing is done an equal distance back from the centerline of the upper lip of the navel. If it is a shallow navel or a small lip, the inner placement is brought forward and a curved bar usually chosen for healing.

Even though it is one of the most common non-ear piercings, it can be surprisingly difficult to heal without good care; a navel piercing can take upwards of 12 months to heal completely. Even if it is kept clean and feels comfortable, it is still a long healer but not necessarily difficult.

Though most people are well suited for a navel piercing there is one major exception: if the point your torso creases at runs through the navel (or close enough to put pressure on your jewelry when you bend over) you should NOT use a ring and in fact will probably be best off NOT getting this piercing at all.

It all depends on your body... I changed my ring sometime from 4 to 6 weeks after it was done, but I changed it while I was in the shower so that I could use antibacterial soap as I was doing it, and lowered my risk of infection. You will feel as though your ring is healed after about 6 weeks, but internally it may not be, and I've seen many friends get minor infections or a small pussy bubble around the hole. As long as you keep track of it and clean it, things like this are minor and go away quickly. If problems persist, see a dr. but DONT take out the ring... if the hole heals with infection in it, the infection will be trapped in your body. They're really fun and easy to care for... unfortunately I took mine out, but I definately miss it now! Good Luck! and yes, look online, b/c there is always more info out there than the piercing artist alone gives you.

I'll be straight up: my belly button piercing hurt more than any other one I've had (eyebrow, lip, ears). but I still have it and got it almost 5 yrs ago. nowadays they put a banana style piercing in it to pierce itand b/c of this, you have a ton of choices about what you want it to look like. when I got it done, they used a circular ring and it caused me all sorts of probs. but it's so standard now it shouldn't be a big deal at all. just wash w/ dial antibacterial soap in the shower and use regular lotion (sounds weird) on it by moving the piercing up and down. (I got this advice from a piercer online after my piercer fucked mine up).

as for tanning....ask at the place you go. I don't tan so I"m not sure.......

good luck and I"m sure it will look great.

You should go to a studio that is APP ceritified, they'll use internally threaded jewelry which is the best and they have to follow extra guidelines than just the ones from the health department to be APP certified. I loved all of my piercings and never had any problems. Do go to an APP certified studio and follow all of their instructions because they definitely know what they are talking about.

It is true that a navel piercing takes about 6 months up to a full year to heal (mine took about 6 months or so...) . However, you can change the navel ring or barbel about a month after the initial piercing. The most important thing to remember when getting your navel pierced is to take good care of the piercing by cleaning it and also remembering not to fiddle or touch the piercing (especially with unwashed hands!!!)... Also make sure you go to a sterile piercing salon and don't be afraid to ask the piercing tech. any questions you have!!! Good luck... you'll love it!!!

It took my belly about 5 months to completely heal (as in no crusties, no pain, no discomfort at all). And that was actually shorter than most people. And for the most part, I didn't have much trouble with it while it was healing, it just took a while.

I got mine done 4-5 years ago and they were always done with a hoop then. I liked the fact that it was a hoop rather than a curved barbell, because the curved barbell is harder to clean. Even within the last 2 years when I got my nipple done, they wouldn't use a barbell. The hoop you can turn and make sure that you've cleaned the entire thing, including the part under your skin. The barbell is very hard to clean entirely, and therefore there are parts of it that dont get disinfected while you are healing... yuck!

I had mine done 8 years ago and it took about 9 months to completely heal. At some point around 6 or 7 months it got infected it hurt so much I was even trying to remove my hoop. I didn't know it was held by tension though I was trying to unscrew the ball. Anyhow, I just kept caring for it as directed and when it healed I never had one problem again with it. ever.

Oh ~ the navel doesn't hurt! Try having your nipples pierced... for the 3rd time with lovely scar tissue! Anywho ~ guess I just have the same to say that the other girls have said...

Healing time's usually around 6months - 1full year. Maybe even longer depending on your body. Your piercing my migrate - reject out. It could even get really gross & pussy - if it gets infected... or just all red & irritated around it. I suggest you get it pierced with a HOOP. It's much more on the safe side, cos it's easier to clean. Cos you can rotate it all the way around while it's all soaped up & clean all the way. Unlike if you get pierced with a barbell, you can only move it so much. Don't put things on it like neosporin or things along those lines... you're not really trying to "heal" your body.

Oh, you can change your jewelry after a month, even without it being fully healed, just don't do it too often.

And for tanning, if you go to a bad &/or spray... just make sure it's covered for a g'bit... so nothing touches it or gets into it.

So, yeah, I say go for it! Woo, I'm putting 3 more in my navel later this month!!!

when I got mine done it was more uncomfortable of a feeling of something in the skin that wasn't normally there - not really pain. I crossed the border to do it because I wasn't old enough to do it in the United states at that point.

on the care sheet they sent home with me they specifically said "no rough sex"...silly me....anyways yes I got it really infected. (I had a huge lump around the area - almost looked like my belly button was trying to grow a penis or testicle or something)

They told me that it would heal in 6-12 months I believe, but that after like 2 months I could change the jewelry. I ended up changing it after about a month or month and a half, and that was only because they tightened the balls so tightly I couldn't get it undone. My navel doesn't have a fold really on the top so I had to get pierced on the bottom. As far as barbell vs. hoop, yeah you can clean the hoop, but it sticks out can get caught on stuff easier. Also with me the fold of skin that I was pierced on - like no fat there at all so it didn't take up much of the barbell and I had no problems with sliding the barbell up and down to clean it real well.

A naval piercing is a surface piercing so its always going to take longer to heal then a piercing that goes actually thru a part of your body.
I have had over 20 piercings in my time and in all honesty ...my naval took the longest to heal and had the most complications during the healing process. I would say mine took about a year to heal.
Most of that was probably from not taking care of it as well as I should have (it was my first piercing when I was still in highschool). Anyhow, I do not this the tanning would be a good idea for your piercing. Also ...when it comes to piercings most people dont take care of them like they should.
If you do it, clean it constantly with anti-bacterial soap. Dial is best I believe ...do not use neosporin or something like that on your piercing because those things are not for pucnture wounds and actually cause problems.
Its all in how your body heals. It depends if your body rejects the jewelry, and also, how well you take care of your piercing.

I have 4 navel piecings currently, but mine are top, bottom, and diagonal bottoms (did that make sense? ???) so it kind of looks like a mini peace sign hehe

it will take you at LEAST six months to a year to fully heal-- however, healing in this case doesn't mean that you can't change jewelry, it just means that you can't take and leave the jewelry out. your body's natural response when you punch a hole in it is to stitch the hole up-- you have to constantly inhibit your body from doing that until it finally understands that it isn't going to work. after a year, you should be able to take your piercing out for a long time without any problems. i have had my navel pierced for 5 years and at two different times didn't wear jewelry for a year without the piercing growing in.

i am going to have to disagree with the person who said to use neosporin on it, however. if you use an ointment, please use polysporin. piercings are best left alone, but if they are touched (which is inevitable if you're naked all the time! ) use anti-bacterial soap instead of alcohol. alcohol will dry the skin around the piercing out which will not promote healing (and look gross, if you do it too often).

also, if you have such a place in your area, go to a piercing specialist, not a jewelry store or tattoo parlor, and no matter where you end up having to do it, INSIST on titanium jewelry only! steal is not good for your body for so many reasons, makes healing time longer and incomplete, and can cause terrible contact dermatitis (which itches like you would not believe).
