Default when customers ask how much I make?

At least three times a night a customer will ask how much I make. If I reply with a quirky "Enough to get by / enough to pay for school in the fall / plenty / enough to placate my bf with video games for me working here" they'll always enquire further! If I say "you first, how much do you make?" then they will answer! So, uhm, lie? Truth? A few times I've said "$100/night" which is under what I usually make - sometimes they're like "that's pretty good," sometimes "gosh, that sucks, if you worked in X place you could be making X amount" [how come guys always say crappy amounts here? "you could be making $200 a night!" perfect reason to move across the country, there.]
but twice the guy will buy a few dances then tipped me like $50 to say "so you make enough tonight." :o Which is neat, but should I say more? ???

Only once have I stated it plain, this guy was trying to convince me that I was "too good" for exotic dancing, so he's like "I make x/week, what can you make here?" me: "150% of what you make." "Oh."
    "I still have my name
    I still have my face
I have not run away from home
    Doesn't seem so long
    If I now embrace
Every single thing I've never known"

I think it's rude when customers ask how much money dancers make. Guys would never ask a banker, waitress, nurse, etc. how much she makes, but for some reason they think it's okay to ask us how much we make. I never give a specific dollar amount. I just tell them that it varies depending on how busy the club is and how many other dancers are working.

I never say a $ amount when some guy asks what I make. If they say some retarded amount like all strippers make $150k/yr I will tell them they vastly overestimate what strippers make but that's it. I turn it into a sort of game.

He: So how much do you make a night?
Me: Oh I do alright. Nobody's getting rich here except maybe the owner HAHA but I make pretty good money.
He: (usually moves on to something else, but if not...) So really, how much do you girls make?
Me: Probably much less than you think. Anyway what difference does it make?
He: (thinking for a while) Uh well I guess none.
    Me: So tell me...
    He: What?
Me: (nodding my head yes) Do I get to dance for you now?
    He: Um, yeah sure.
Me: (all sarcastic and goofy) Oh wait lemme twist your arm first!
He: (laughing) Yeah I'd really hate that.....
    .....on with the dances

I am always playfully sarcastic and it works for me. Sometimes I'll say something smartass like 'oh lemme check my palm pilot and I can give you an exact amount' as I reach for my Betty Boop purse. They always get a really goofy expression and then I just laugh. Or sometimes I'll add to the above 'what difference does it make' line: 'do you work for the IRS?' or 'is that how you decide whether I dance for you or not?' Stupid stuff like that gets them laughing and opens the door for me to change the subject.

This is a variation of that which I don't really use often, but sometimes it's appropriate

him: "how much do you make"
    me: "nothing, right now"

If a customer asks about your income, turn it to your advantage ! "That depends on how long we stay in the VIP room ... ready ?" Turning the question this way instead of a direct response allows you to subtly remind the customer that your earnings come from his expenditures instead of smacking him in the face with the fact that you want money and he hasn't yet given you any ! It also puts the customer interaction right back on track i.e. private dances/champagne room instead of allowing more financial questions.

One comeback I had a friend use a lot which worked was, "Better than most, but not as good as many" which, for an average dancer is pretty much the truth. Another good one is on the similar logic that Melonie was on. Just say, "It all depends on the generocity of the nice guys that come in here each night" while looking him in the eye or touching his knee.

I hate that question. I will often reply with a sly "you tell me how much you make first." That usualy moves things on to better topics like how many dances they like to start off with

I will, most often than not, do as per Melonie said... point the question back to lap dances. However there are times when I won't use this and say

"Well, since you're not my tax accountant there is no point for me to tell you" or "Hey! That's a bit personal"

I too don't like to reveal how much I do and don't earn each night due to safety reasons. I am within walking distance my club and hence walk home after work (in 3+ years of doing this, I have not had a problem... I know what I'm doing. I don't dress to grab attention, I actually dress rather daggy and in shabby clothes. I really don't look like I have money)....

If it is someone trying to act rude or macho like they can throw some "big bucks" my way I usually say "enough to pay my own bills thanks"

I also think it's rude when customers ask that. I find if I say that I do well enough, then they don't buy as many dances or tip as well, but if I say that I don't make crap, then it sounds like a sob story. It's kind of a no win situation, at least for me anyway.

I will usually respond with something like a middle class income. Except I pay double the taxes of someone who has a regular job, I pay all of my own medical insurance and I get no vacation or sick pay.

I rarely get this qusetion, unless the person is seeing the tips on stage and thinking that the girls are cleaning up. $20 spread around the stage can look like $100 to someone who isn't accustomed to seeing cash on a regular basis (ie; credit card users).

we all wish they would make thr guys buy tipping dollars so we can get tipped on stage, otherwise we dont get tipped. mind you, our stage dances are generally us just mincing around the pole really, i know in america you girls do crazy stuff on stage. we only dance for two songs, topless in the second song.

im always getting asked how much i make and its a sore point for me as i should be making more than i am. if i say not much, its a sob story, if i say loads then they feel they dont need to spend on me. but im going to take the advice of melonie and dancerwealth, i just wish i could remember all the good advice i read on here wen im at work!
