Default Fondest childhood memory

On a happy note, I was wondering if some of you would like to share the happiest time in your childhood. As I get older, I like to look back on some of the good times in my childhood. Here goes-

The most memorable times I had growning up involved my grandparents(on my dad's side). My grandpa espeically. He used to swing me on the swing in the backyard, take me on walks to see the ducks, pick flowers for me, set up the atari video games for me. He even set up the xmas tree every year with me(he was jewish). I miss both of them so much, and realize that both of my grandparents loved me so much. They meant the world to me.

My best memories were also with my grandparents. They had a huge yard with a garden in it..... I could get lost for hours in my imagination out there...... it was awesome.

isnt it great to have such wonderful grandparents? It was such a safe place for me to just be me. As a kid i didnt feel safe quite often, so the good times I had as a kid I try to focus on when reflecting.

My sister and I shared a room growing up and we were so close. After the lights went out we would talk, laugh, gossip. Those are my fondest memories. I hope to have two girls very close in age so my children can experience that. I honstly don't know what I would have done without my sister. I love her so much.

It must have been cool to have a sister; especially one who you get along with so well. I have no brothers or sisters myself. Maybe I wouldnt have felt so alone growing up if I hadnt been an only child. I did findout a couple of years back that I have lilke 40 cousins on my mom's side that I didnt know about, I did some research into my family history and foundout some strange things. CRazy huh?

40 cousins?? Did your parents have alot of sibilings or something? Yeah I think sibilings are very important. I was lucky with my sister we are like twins. Sometimes we just look at eachother and have his telepathic thing and we both know what the other is thinking and we start laughing. I am going to have two children right after eachother I don't care what it does to my body. My sister is my best friend.

My fondest childhood memories was helping my grandpa mow his HUGE lawn with the riding lawn mower. He would let me sit on his lap and steer the mower. I also remember after we were done, he would bring me a nice big glass of ice water and sit back and tell me about all of the flowers, fruits and veggies he used to grow in his yard. Those were great times...I miss him a lot.

My other fond memory was sitting outside with my family and stargazing during the summer months. My dad would tell my brother and I stories about the stars (made up of course...but, I didn't know at the time). The stories were great and I remember how awed I was at his "vast knowledge". LOL Can't wait to do that with my own daughter.

the 40 cousins are on my mom's mother's side so theyre not direct cousins exactly
I think that the bond you have with your sister is priceless
Its wonderful

venusgoddess-

Isnt it true that the best things in life are free? Memories with family members are so important. My dad is great too, he used to take me camping, bike riding, canoeing, everything.. he was and is great too.

Ooh, my favorite childhood memory was when we lived back in Connecticut. Our house and my Grandparents' houses were right next to eachother. We'd always run over on Sunday mornings and my Grandmother would make us Soft-boiled eggs (in the little stands and everything) with toast. It was the greatest!

We took Grandma with us (Grandpa had died in '76) when we moved to Rhode Island, and she had the downstairs apartment. My good times with her lasted up until '96, when she passed on at the age of 86. I learned everything that I know, from her and her only. She was truly one of a kind.

Wow <sniffle> I'm getting all sappy. LOL

Walking along the river about a half mile from my aunt's house, when 10 yearolds could walk by themselves.

The smell of Thanksgiving turkey - the sight of the presents under the tree on Christas morning.

In summer, running around everywhere shirtless and not getting burned. Swimming. Climbing trees. In winter, snow forts, tunnels, and sledding.

Playing for days on end, bicycling everywhere, and talking about everything with the neighbor kid that I grew up with. He died in his teenage years.

My father ..... he was my hero! But a particular memory is being in our swimming pool and riding on his back with my arms around his neck while he pretended to be a dolphin playing in the ocean. Jumping up out of the water and the rush of diving back under over and over. It was like my own living breathing waterpark

Last week was 5 years ago that he died. I still to this day think he was the best man to have ever walked the earth er:

My two favorite memories are with my grandpa: going fishing with my grandpa-just me and him and a picnic basket

and

learning how to dance to Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Louie Armstrong.. man that man had great feet to stand on! He was the most gorgeous man- tall, dark, and Irish and everytime I hear some Sinatra I get all teary eyed. (Grandpa died eleven years ago).

He was truly the best male role model I had in my life.

My fondest childhood memory is from when i was about 5 years old waking up on a beautiful early summer morning and walking out to the back patio, i looked up at the corner of the covered patio and in the sunshine was a spider web covered in morning dew. It was beautiful and sparkly and i could have stare at it for hours. I can still see the image clearly like i just saw it yesterday, i think that was one of my most happy innocent and curious moments. I would give anything to find that happiness again. I knew no pain , I was just a child enjoying the beauty of my own backyard on a sunny morning. I still search for the perfect web that will put me back in that time and place. Thinking like a child is one of the gifts that i am learning to regain, its wonderful to stop and notice something so naturally beautiful that it stops your breath and brings tears to your eyes. Thank you for this wonderful opportunity for me to remember something happy. I somehow feel lighter.

i was never really close to my grandma or grandpa growing up id say my fondest memory was with my older brother weird huh? he used to always fix cars and work on "fully loading" this vehicle and that motorcycle, anyways every night my parents would get in really bad arguments and me and him would hang out in the garage and talk and he'd teach me how to fix cars and everytime he finished a car id be the first person he'd take out before my sisters or his friends and just me and him would get ice cream or go do something together and when he sold the cars he'd give me half the money for helping, nothing special i know but i was having a rough time and he always just seemed to single me out as his favorite lol my sisters hated him but i always admired him for pushing aside alot for the family and being there for me when i had no one, unfortunatley when i was 17 he moved away with his fiance and tried to start this new life away from our family because besides me he hated them lol a year later he died in a boating accident in flordia and the sad part was his girlfriend was pregnant when it happened with a little girl he used to call me and tell me dessy (thats what they all call me) and tell me how excited he was to be a daddy, i miss him soo much, anyways i will forever cherish those late night talks in the garage and all the times we spent together those stand out the most when i was a kid... (im such a sap crying while typing) but thankful i still have the memories, i think about him everyday
RIP Cole Martinez 2/5/2001 i love u bub

on the bright side he's also the reason i dont have to rely on men or overcharging automechanics when my cars fucked lol
Thanks for bringing this up shift i think about him and get pissed he's gone but dont spend time remembering little shit like that im crying and laughing at the same time but it feels amazing lol

youre very welcome for the opportunity to remember something happy. AT times, it seems that stress, and negativity surround us. I think it is a good thing to reflect on the positive aspects of life-the happy moments from time to time.

destiny-(warning: this is a little sad)
your older brother was an amazing man. im so sorry about his accident. I have also lost someone I love. Its very hard for me to talk about it, still to this day, it kills me inside. I dont accept his passing on, and that makes it all the worse. Like I have been told many times, you dont have to be ok with the fact that he is gone, you just have to accept it in order to move on in your life. I havent been successful with this. I admit it, so be it. No one is perfect. It has affected my entire life. I do the best I can though and its tough as hell. But Im still here, I am a survivor.

There are beautiful beautiful stories here. I wanted to mention how for some, scents trigger good memories- like food or perfume. The smell of fresh paint inside a house reminds me of the great joy I had living in a remodeled country house for a few months when I was a kid. I hope to get into real estate investing and I will insist on painting the interiors of the properties myself to get the "memory jones"...

I remember when I was small and didnt have a care in the world... I remember riding bike, playing tag, and saving the kittens... I also remember when I had my best friend literally 2 houses away and we would get grounded together and not be able to talk. lol So we would sneak out for a second and drop "mail" into the little buckets we hung from our windows. Those were the best days...

I also remember going to Miami everyyyyyy year with my grandparents for 3 weeks. Those were the BEST! How I wish things were so easy again. (No bills, no worries...just fun)

wow some of these stories had me in tears. :'( Doesnt help that I am in a sad mood all together either. BUT, I am glad to know that most of you had a great hero, and can forever remember those things. Destiny, your story had me crying, too, girl. I cant imagine how bad it must be to lose your close sibling. I am so close to my sister, that I cant even imagine something like that...

My hero was my grandfather. He used to do EVERYTHING for us... God I miss him.

hmmmmm...my fondest memory? Probably when I lived overseas we moved there when I was 5. We lived on a huge navy base and us kids just ruled. Kids everywhere, halloween was always a huge scene and for blocks! There were paths going through the jungle we used to venture out on those. That was just a really cool and carefree time in my life. I'd never dream of letting my kids roam the way my friends and I did.

Oh I just remembered a game we made up. Can't remember what we called it, maybe "foot fry" or something like that. It had to be a super hot day, so hot that the asphalt steamed. We'd turn on a hose and let it run, get our feet wet and then see who could run the most laps barefoot around the cul-de-sac before giving up and having to re-wet our feet.

DestinyDevine I'm so sorry what happened to your brother. I grew up an only child and I always always wanted a big brother who would look out for me and scare the bejesus out of boys who wouldn't leave me alone. You're so lucky you had that at least for awhile.

I'm curious, how far back do everyone's memories go? I can remember my 1 year old birthday party and I even have a memory prior to that.
