    Default Mercury levels in Salmon

hey... I was wondering if this is a regional or national issue, or if anyone else has even heard it...

I eat a TON of salmon, it's one of my favorite foods, but I have been warned by several doctors & people that because of pollution, mercury levels are very high in the salmon now, and that it sould not be eaten excessively. Has anyone else heard this and how seriously do you think it should be taken? I've cut back to 3-4 servings per week.

it's not just in salmon...other fish too, like tuna.

Try only eating farm raised salmon. It's not as good for you but you could also start taking omega-3 pills to up your intake. It sucks that something that's so good for us is now being contaminated

yeah, I think it could be national. I've heard of it but it's more prevalent where my family is from. not just mercury but dioxins as well. Women of child bearing age shouldn't be eating contaminated fish I think the warning was like 1 meal per month?

Anyhow, I don't think the levels are too high or your fish would likely come with a fish advisory consumption warning. I think these contaminant levels are highest in fish you catch yourself.

Yes, it's true. It's like that in almost all seafood.

Definitely cut back a bit...if you are pregnant, you may want to cut that down even more. I love seafood, but when I was pregnant, I ate seafood once a week. And, even then I only had small servings.

    Agreed with Miss George.

Oh, and I thought I read somewhere that the parts of Salmon that have the HIGHEST level of Mercury is the fatty tissue in the belly (or something like that)...since most people don't eat that, then it's not as big of a concern. I'll see if I can find that article...

Hey all. I bought a cuisine mag. Border's has it, called Eating Well. eatingwell.com. It has an article about this, and a breakdown list on the fish w/highest merc., which ones should be eaten x amt of times per wk., etc.

Ick, don't do that! Farmed fish is crap.

I worry about mercury levels too, as I eat a ton of fish (like a can of tuna a day, (wild) salmon 3x a week, plus the occasional cod or snapper fillet). I was thinking about doing a yearly chelation to get the heavy metals out- anyone know anything about this?

We get the best of the best I think you can get as far as fish is concerned - at the farmer's market at the Ferry Building in San Francisco. It's such a fantastic selection, all fresh and bright and beautiful. I think if you are able to determine the direct source of you food you can consider yourself safe.

Sv From the joint EPA/FDA advisory
    at http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopi...kgrounder.html

Five of the most commonly eaten fish that are low in mercury are shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish.

Another commonly eaten fish, albacore (“white”) tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna. So, when choosing your two meals of fish and shellfish, you may eat up to 6 ounces (one average meal) of albacore tuna per week.

wow, im impressed! You women know your shit. It's true, farmed fish is the most polluted of all, and way lower in vitamins. Chelation tharapy is great to remove toxins. Smaller fish like snapper and cod have lower levels of toxins. Fish from Alaska have been found with ZERO contamination, they are best. Trout from fresh water streams in Alaska are the purest fish in the world.

I have done a lot of research on this topic and found that red snapper is about the safest fish to eat. DO NOT EAT SHELLFISH. Heavy-metals sink to the bottom of the ocean and guess where the shellfish live ? Yup, right in the layer of toxic metals and chemicals. I will never eat a shrimp or a lobster again!

HA! well I'll be dipped. We've impressed Ryan!

I can't lay off the lobster. Nope just can't do it. I do wonder about sushi? Raw albacore is my fave do you think eating it raw or cooked makes no difference? Or is the difference in the grade of fish?

This is going to sound funny. I have a regular customer or I should say, an ex-regular since he lives in San Francisco. He comes down to see me (LA, CA) about once a month.

He has been retired for three months and is a sports fisherman. He mainly cathes salmon and tuna. He vacuum packs salmon that he has smoked himself,( it does it in a way that diabetics can handle it, not too much salt) and he cans the tuna.

I wonder how bad this can be? He goes out to Half Moon Bay and doesn't stay too close to the "city"?

I have eaten a ton of salmon in the past two years

    Concerned,

Ryan I am afraid your logic is flawed. Heavy metals are not sitting in the water waiting to be to be absorbed. They combine with other elements and only sink if the they weigh more than the volume they displace--that is why boats float.

They will accumulate as you go up the food chain. i.e. fish that eat fish that eat fish that eat fish. That is why albacore and shark are the most mercury polluted of fish--they are predators.

And shrimp are shallow water dwellers, not bottom dwellers.

I'm sure it's fine- it's not like he's catching farmed fish. We get that a lot up here too, cutomers bringing in smoked/frozen fish (usually trout or salmon) and giving it to their favorite girls. It's kind of funny.
