Default Madonna - do you think she's a good singer?

    Here is the question:

Do you consider Madonna an average singer, or above average? I consider her above average. I've never seen her live, but I think that with her money and taste, she obviously hires vocal coaches and she can sing her material well. I know she lip syncs live.... but this guy said he heard her sing live and she is "average at best". I consider an average singer one who maybe you will find at a regular bar gig. Sometimes they weave in and out of key, and they just don't have the tone. But they are singing 40 songs a night, so.... possibly if they sang a 9 song set, they could be pro. What do you think? Is Madonna an average singer or above average?

I'm asking because this argument just ended a relationship between me and an online friend lol when he insulted me. I wanna see honestly what other people think.

She's an average singer. If this is the type of thing that ends a relationship, then the relationship was going to end sooner or later, that is really frivolious shit!

I dont think Madonna is above average, but the reason why I've loved this woman since I was 4 is because she opened the doors, shes provacative and man can she dance. She has the power to capture everyones attention and make them say "did she just do/say what I think she just did?" Shes great! She came into the business and from day one she said she wanted to rule the world. One tough cookie if you ask me. But what I think is most important is that she is extremely smart. In order for her to get to where she is today she has to have some noodles up there lol. Same goes for Prince, John Lennon, Elton John, ect. Madonna has been around for DECADES and is still rockin. Yeah she changes her religion every 5 minutes (just kidding) but I think shes fantastic! But in my opinion she has and average voice. An average woman with an average voice who made her dreams come true and is now an ABOVE AVERAGE WOMAN!

Ok guys, what do you consider the voice of the guy to be that sings every Wed. night down at the corner bar? Is that below average, because it definitely isn't as good as Madonna.

I'm seeing Madonna next week in the Bay Area for her re-invention tour. I can't wait!

What defines Madonna's talent to me is her sheer range of flexibility. She's been able to pull off a wide variety of styles over the years, from her early pop-tunes, to Evita, to recent higher budget studio works. Her shows aren't like concerts, but instead well choreographed performances with dancers, stunning wardrobe and visuals.

I consider her exceptionally talented as a performer as well as a vocalist. While she isn't in the top 10 for any given musical style in pure vocal quality, her ability to shift and adapt her voice and maintain her individuality of presence towards a wide variety of approaches is what defines her unique talent.

While I'm not what one would consider a big Madonna "fan"- I'll catch her shows when I can since they are so highly regarded and a good time. She's one of a massive list of performers worth going to see when they tour.

And on the corner bar performers- in the city, I've witnessed some of the most incredible talent in undiscovered and unsigned bands... but there are also the 5 night piano bar vocalists that are pretty much mediocre at best as well. hehe.

I would say Madonna is more of an entertainer than a full fledged singer whose talents are soley based on singing....she is a decent singer, I won't deny that. but her range is limited. she doesn't fluctuate b/t high and low that much and she rarely (to never) does any runs in her songs. an above average singer I would say is Amy Lee from Evanescence IMHO. compare her w/ madonna and you see the difference. as for the average joe shmoe singing at a bar down the street....it's all in your opinion whether he is good or not. he may be way above average vocally, but there is no market for his music or appearance right now. make sense?

She is my idol! Above average without a doubt! I can't think of another entertainer who has come from a place she has, and made it that big. She has made choices that ran a great risk to her, and survived.
    Love that woman!

I think that Madonna is a strong, amirable performer. As a teenager I dressed up like her, I idolized her. I remember going to the mall in white stilletos, a white flappy lace bow, a white tank top and matching white skirt. This was in the 6th grade..What was I thinking?? Jeezzz...

AS for her voice I think it is above average, yet not phenomenal.

I have much respect for Madonna, she worked her ass off to get to her superstar status as an entertainer.

Thanks polecat. This would be correct. And yes, I was referring to the mediocre vocalists in the cover bands to prove a point - THAT is average. Anyone that could actually sing the variety that she has and with that tonal quality and control is above average. And believe me, Giselle, I get it. I haven't seen over 1,000 live shows and lived with a musician for 9 years not to. I am merely posting this to see what fans think.

I think Madonna has an above average voice, but I wouldn't consider her an amazing singer. She's an excellent performer though. She's bold and not afraid to be different, and she's been popular since the 80's-how many musicians can say that?

I would consider Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, and Christina Aguilera excellent singers. I may not care for their music, but they all have great voices.

This is how I think of Madonna:
average vocalist, above average performer , outstanding businesswoman

I think you have to put her in proper group comparison. For instance, i don't compare her to cover band weekend wannabe rock stars at the local club. When comparing her to other actual artists, she's an average vocalist. Example featuring current "stars": Hillary duff below average (waaay below); michelle branch average; Amy Lee above average; Celine Dion excellent.

One thing I do admire about Madonna is the fact that she has and continues to make her vocals better. She went from almost Hilary duff bad with Lucky Star to singing Andrew Lloyd Weber songs in Evita. That takes hard work. She's made the most of her vocals and that is more than a lot of performers can say (ahem, J.Lo)

Analiese, that was a good post. I would compare her to some of the local musicians, because they perform just as often or more, they write, and they release their own material. They may not have that type of backing or help, but they do it. How else are you going to break into the industry? They are artists too. They are just playing covers to make money. And some of them are ultra-talented, believe it or not.

I was comparing Madonna in essence to everyone, and coming up with the answer that she is an above-average vocalist. If you do compare her to other artists who have made it, I still call above average. How far are you going to go here, anyway? Are we going to compare her to all artists or artists in her genre/category, only experienced artists, etc. etc.? I suppose it just comes down to pure opinion. Yes, her vocals have greatly improved since Lucky Star. Incredible woman.

erotic, you're right, in this you'd have to either narrow her into one subgroup or take it wideopen to make a definitve comparison. I don't think it's really a matter of being average or above or anything, just that she's worked her ass off and wherver she started at, she's gone above THAT, and to me, that's what's important.

BTW I wasn't dissing local musicians, I should have said "national recording artist": blah blah crap. I completely admire all musicians (even the bad ones) for doing their thing and trying to make their dreams happen. I wish I had that kind of drive and ambition. Hell that is a talent in and of itself!! (I do prefer the ones who write and play their own music, I will admit. )

I love Madonna. I wasn't crazy about her bubble-gum style phase (but luckily that didn't last long.. lol). I admire her for constantly reinventing herself. She's never the same style for long.

I think she has an above-average voice, and it's unmistakable.

As someone who has worked with music most of my working life, I have considered what really makes songs work, and vocal talent is part of this.

I figure that sometime around the early '90's, actual talent as a vocalist / singer became secondary - or at least not as important, as the other elements that make up songs, with a big factor being marketing.

To answer the question, I think Madonna went from taking her vocal skills as a secondary part of the equation to a major one. In the process, technically she became a fair way above average, in my opinion.

Is she as vocally talented as Annie Lennox? I don't think so. But she is Madonna, and it is her vocal signature that is the most recognisable of all her talents, and for which we love her. I consider my self a fan, but similar to Polecat, not a huge one.

Just got home from Madonna... and I have to say SHE ROCKS!!!!!!!

This has to have been one of the better shows I've ever seen and well worth the higher than usual concert price.

She was a bit sharp early on for a few tunes, likely due to monitor problems (her mixer guy should be fired- who puts to mixers in the stage pit anyways?), but with that "I cant hear a damn thing" glance down, the problem was soon remedied. She even pulled out a guitar and strummed several tunes, although it's obvious her vocal and instrument playing coordination is still rough- she tensed up in concentration and had a little difficulty here and there, but overall very impressive when with instrument.

What I found the most impressive is this show had a large cast of professional dancers- most of which were 20 years her junior, yet she stole the show with her dance, energy, and fitness. She truly looks better, sexier and more beautiful than she ever has before and had such strong vocals... she belted out to over 20+ songs for a 2 hour duration show of non-stop energy.

The show was also quite emotionally moving. Madonna is currently a hardcore Kabbalahist which has definately had a major impact in her spirituality. She wore a shirt recognizing this, images in support on the screens, and there were books on Kabbalah for sale all over the event. While it wasnt enough to be a theme for the show or marketing effort, it was instead a subtle cue. She walked out and had such a sincerity when she looked almost teary eyed toward the crowd and thanked them all for holding her up for the past 20 years. Everyone went absolutely nuts.

The show was very family friendly, definately PG in nature, and professional beyond words. There was so much dance, choreography, moves, and theatrics that it was a presentation like no other. Wardrobe for Madonna and the dancers changed like 7-8 times during the show and in the blink of an eye. It was truly a spectacle of incredible planning and choreography that must be seen to be believed.

She's heading east now, and if you can possibly find scalped tickets (most every show is already sold out), I highly recommend it. There is no way you can walk away from this tour with any feeling she is "average" at any capacity.

I think she's more of an entertainer than a singer.I lived with this guy who owns a recording studio and he taught me how to manufacture a voice and how to distinguish it from the real mccoy. It totally ruined music for me.

Her voice perfectly suits her art, and many artists never achieve that.

You can't compare her to an opera singer or a bluegrass singer or any other type of singer, in terms of vocal range, agility, etc. The aspect of her instrument that she has developed is different than that, and as a music teacher at a major conservatory, I rate her "exceptionally skilled and gifted."

Madonna has a unique voice. One that has evolved since the beginning of her music career. She has led the way and outlasted most of her competitors. She is awesome. My favorite "what it feels like for a girl" So sensuous and erotic.

Thanks for your input. This is what I should've said.... because I can't agree more. It's that aspect I just didn't know how to explain...

As far as the argument breaking up the friendship....

I met this 35 year old guy from Jersey - you would think he is about 20 lol. He thinks he knows it all - without the slightest clue in most cases where I'm coming from. Anyway, we got into this arguement because he said Madonna was an awful singer. Ugh. I just can't date someone or hardly even talk to someone who thinks this. Blah. Anyway, he ended up telling me if I think Madonna is good, then I need to find a scene, and that I was clueless. Sheesh. After he had compared Madonna to Jon Bon Jovi. LMAO. His arguments were just hilarious.... if I had them I would post them here just for laughs.

With the exception of the Maverick Records fiasco, Madonna's business savvy is impressive.

The rest is pretty subjective, as many such things are.

I'm not saying Madonna isn't talented, but hell, even I can sound good with a pitch shifter.
