Default Poison Ivy?

Alrighty...

Well, last Sunday was my daughter's First Birthday Bash. After a while, my hubby took his son out in the back of the apartment complex to play wiffle-ball. His son hits the ball really well, and kept hitting it into the bushes. Yep, bushes. Hubby had to go and retrieve it a zillion times.

So, on Monday, he develops this rash on his legs. Looks to me like Poison Ivy, but I've never had it myself, so I'm not totally sure, and I didn't see the actual plant.

Ok, that was Monday. His rash of course, has spread to his arms, and up his legs. Friday Night, my lil 1 year old started getting it on the back of her legs, and her tush, which by the way, is the area that comes into contact with my hubby's arm when he's holding her.

So I called her pediatrician straight-away (at 3am.. lol). She told me that in order for my hubby to have given it to her, she would've had to have developed the rash either the same day, or day after he got it. She said that it's actually spread through the oil, and once it's washed off (like in the shower, or rinsing the area), it's gone, and not contagious anymore.

She has an appointment on the 10th for her checkup anyway, so she'll have it looked at then, but I just wanted to see if anyone knows anything about Poison Ivy? Or could it be some other poisonous plant?

I ran out yesterday into the backyard to see if I could find it, but they had cut all the weeds down apparently.

Any help would be appreciated. I've been giving her benadryl, and using some aveeno lotion on her, and she's been a little bit more comfortable.

I recently dicovered poison oak in my yard the hard way. I thinkn they are basically the same thing, except poison oak grows on the ground. I went out and killed it all with weed killer. The rash didn't really itch so much as burn. It finally went away after a couple of month....sad.

Eeek.. Thanks Emily.. We were thinking it could be that too. It figures that as soon as I go to take a look at the plants, they had already cut them down. The 10th can't come fast enough, I tell ya.. LOL.. She's not itching it or anything, but it does look very angry. It's red, splotchy, and just downright yucky. Hubby, on the other hand, is constantly itching at his. It looks like someone took a fork to his legs and arms.. Yucky...

Hopefully the doctor will be able to tell me what it is for sure when we go on the 10th.

I've also been putting Johnson's Diaper Rash cream on the spots. She's never had a diaper rash so far, so I figure I might as well get some use of it.. LOL.. If nothing else, it has a nice cooling effect that makes her smile.

Thanks again, Hon..

if it's fork-like on the legs and arms, that sounds more like ivy. Mine was on my foot from wearing flip flips out in the yard.

I got this big little pus-filled blisters that I wanted to pop so bad, but couldn't.

Benadryl will stop the itching or at least slow it down. Calimine lotion is the only real way to keep it covered and dry it up.

Thanks for the tips, Everyone... I actually got Calamine lotion, and it's clear.. LOL.. He would've dealt with the pink kind, but he's way happy that I found the clear kind. I asked my daughter's Pediatrician if it would be okay to use it on her, and she said very little, and only occasionally, because since it's absorbed through the skin, it's easy for a young child to overdose on it. I've been giving her Benadryl, which I think has helped a great deal. I've also been using the diaper rash cream.. LOL.. She may as well get some use of it since she's never had a diaper rash.

Emily, I'm going to keep an eye on the backyard, and see when it grows back. Yep, hubby's started out as kind of like a fork-type rash. He's so bad though, he's been scratching, and then he tells me all about the stuff that comes out.. Lovely, isn't he? LOL

Last Summer, my hubby's Grandmother actually got Poison Ivy while she was out working in her garden. She didn't have it in her yard, she got it from someone burning their Poison Ivy plants in their yard. I guess it became airborne, and she got it that way. Very odd. She was covered in the stuff.

There is a soap called Octogon that is sold in the supermarkets. It’s usually in the Laundry Detergent section. It does a great job of drying out Poison Ivy. I would recommend your husband use it on the affected area (It may be too harsh for your child). Not sure about the pediatrician's advice that once you shower Poison Ivy isn't contagious. I am guessing that he/she has never had it. Poison Ivy can spread itself through the oils it produces, including getting on sheets, car seats, clothes, etc. It can even be spread in the lather of soap. Once it dries up it goes away quickly.

I use lavendar on poison ivy. It dries it up and after a couple days it mostly goes away. I'm not sure about using it on your daughter tho, since it is absorbed through the skin - tho I can't imagine it would hurt? I use the essential oil but I think you can do it as a tea too, which might be milder for your daughter.

I've always been told that the rash can be spread from the fluid that comes out when you scratch the rash...

My sister is into Herbs and plant life.. something really cool
well I have poison ivy all over my back fence
interestingly right near it are these weeds with wide leaves.. i think they are called something like Plantane (sounds like that i know its not that carribean banana!) its just an awful weed ive seen all my life (Im in Va)
well she said this weed typically grows in areas poison ivy is as it works similar to the aloe plant
it doesnt have a gel but you kindof mush the leaves with your fingers breaking them open and rub lightly on poison ivy it takes the itch away ..
i had one little dot on my finger and this did work
it also works on other skin problems
another is candeluna?
if i had a herb website id send but if this sounds interesting you may want to do some research .. i can always ask my sister for more detail if you like

Unfortunately, I don't have any advice for your daughter, but for your husband.... BLEACH! I know it sounds insane and I thought it would hurt like hell because when I get poision ivy it spreads EVERYWHERE (even inside my ears and between my toes and fingers) and they're blisters on me that I end up popping (yuck i know but it's a habit). Anyways, I kept having people tell me to put bleach on it and low and behold... my poison ivy was gone the next day every time. The stuff works wonders... GOOD LUCK!

I found this:
http://poisonivy.aesir.com/

and lavender as long as its the right kind is perfectly safe for use on infants and pregnant women. the problem is finding the right kind.

but poison ivy really is nothing, its really just annoying. the calimin should help....

Thanks Dahlings..

Here's an update.. Hubby went to the Emergency Room last night (because I made him.. lol). His feet were all swelled up and his legs looked really bad. They confirmed that it's Poison Ivy, and told him the best he could do was wait it out. They prescribed him a steroid (Prednezone <sp> I think). The good news is it's drying out, so it shouldn't be much longer before it clears up.

As for the baby, the doctor told hubby that it was probably on his clothing and his shoes, and she must've come into contact with it before he changed his clothes. I remember that I had him hold her while they were outside so I could walk my little sister to her car. Ugh.. Kicking myself now, I tell ya.. lol

She's got her appointment on Thursday. The back of her legs is where she has it, and it's been looking angry. But, she does get a nightly bath in aveeno, so it keeps her comfy.

I must be immune to it, because I haven't gotten it, and I'm constantly with Delia, that's a given. LOL. But, hey, I'm not complaining about that, I'd rather not have it. Although, if it was a choice between me and her, I'd want to have it instead. :Sigh:

Thanks again everyone..
