Default Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

I just saw the new installment in the Harry Potter series.

I'll try not to spoil anything for those of you who haven't seen the film.

As the reviews state, it is in a much darker tone than the two previous films. There aren't a lot of happy, cheeful moments in the film. But, when they are there, they are hilarious!

The first appearance of the Dementors, I feel, captured the spookieness from J.K. Rowlings' books. They looked truely scarey.

Harry, Hermione and Ron are all growing-up before our eyes and you see what may be the beginnings of some sort of attraction between Hermione and Ron, along with their usual bickerings. The scene where the potential attraction between them peeks-out is very brief and you have to pay attention.

Michael Gambon replaces Richard Harris in the role of Albus Dumbledore and does a credible job, though it may be hard for fans of the two earlier films to accept the new actor in the role.

The scenery is as impressive as ever and the special effects measure-up to the earlier installments. Though Voldemort does not appear in this film, the Dementors more than make-up for his absence in adding the horror aspect.

If you've read the books, you may be disappointed in what was left-out in the film. I can't get specific without spoiling some of the film for people. A clue: remember what the books say about how the Marauders' Map was created? That part is left-out. I felt let down with that omission. Maybe they will mention it in future movies.

My advice is to go see the film. It seems appropriate for children 8+, but may be too scarey for younger children. The film will be enjoyable for anyone wyho sees it, but don't expect 100% adherance to the books, though it doesn't add anything, some things are left out.

I will probably see it again in the theatre and will buy it when it comes out on DVD.

Just my opinion.

I saw it on Friday. It definately has a different tone than the other movies.

A lot of the layout for the school changed, at least in my head! It has become bigger and more encompassing. They spend more time outside on the grounds - something we never really saw before (other than the dark woods.)

I thought it was still great. But it does have a different feel to it.

There still are a lot of metaphorical lessons in it. That is what I like about it.

I thought it was worth seeing, i just didnt like the people in the theatre being so rude about lines and seating. Never seen such a hoard of evil people. I couldnt believe what grown people will do just to get a good seat.
Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic cop. Your normal speeder will panic and immediately pull over to the side. This is wrong. It arouses contempt in the cop-heart. Make the bastard chase you. He will follow. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

LOL @ Muggles...

I'm definitely going to see it, although I probably won't go to the theater.. heh..

My neice (who is 9) may try and drag me to go see it with her though, we went to the last one together.. lol

Anyhow... Is it just me (and hubby) who have noticed that Hermione has um.. matured? That girl is going to be totally hot in a few years..

One concern I have about the cast of the Harry Potter films relates to the child stars who play Harry, Hermione and Ron.

Eventually, the Harry Potter saga will come to an end. There will be a total of seven books, which implies seven films.

Once these films are done, the three former children - now, young adults - may find themselves typecast and be unable to get any future roles in films.

Daniel (Harry Potter) Radcliffe starred in two films prior to the Harry Potter series began, but no non-Harry films since.

Rupert (Ron Weasley) Grint has starred in only one other film since his role in the Harry films began and that film was a total dog.

Emma (Hermione Granger) Watson has starred in no other films but the Harry Potter series.

Granted, they are all still young and they may be under some sort of contract binding them exclusively to the Harry Potter series, though that wouldn't explain Grint's role in the B film, Hollywood has a long history of discarding child stars once their more famous film or TV series' have run their course.

I certainly hope these three will not find themselves among the long list of forgotten child stars. I hope they all have good managers and supportive parents.

My objection was that Hermione is too freakin' pretty! Darnit, she's supposed to have buck teeth and frizzy hair and basically look like a nerd! No, goshdarnit, no more Denise Richardses playing rocket scientists, I'm starting the society of geeky girls that look like geeks.

Honestly, re: typecasting, I think it will depend on what they look like as they get older - if they keep their very child-like appearances [case in point, Maculy Caulkin, however it is spelled] and plus not good at acting in other pieces [several child stars] it may not work out for them. But if they look very different as they mature, I don't think it will be much of a problem.

Oh, my generally "I'm too mature for my own good" guy friend was like "You wanna see a movie on Sunday?" me: "Oh, uh, sure." him: "you'll want to see the next harry potter, right?" me: "yeah! Let's go!" but I spent a bit of the time before being "are you sure you want to see this? it, ya know, has barely any blood, we still have time to see Van Helsing if you want..." and then finally after we're in the theater he's like "actually, I really did want to see it, but didn't I didn't want to go by myself and you're the only person I know who won't make fun of me for it."
heeheehee. we had fun, though popcorn and peanut M&Ms are not a good breakfast.
All in all, I really liked the movie, moreso I believe than 2 - possibly 1, but I really enjoyed one. though I secretly wanted trent reznor cast as sirius black, as I did for Aragorn ala LotR, but they don't listen to me and seem to do pretty well with their own casting abilities.
dork dork dork <- me.
Oh, and did anyone else whisper to their friends / scream aloud in the theater "I'm King of the World!!" during one particular scene?
"I still have my name
I still have my face
I have not run away from home
Doesn't seem so long
If I now embrace
Every single thing I've never known"
