Default Dj's: Do you copy dancer's CD's without asking???

Just a rant and a question all in the same thread.

Dj's.. if you heard a CD or a few songs on a CD that a dancer brought in, would you copy it using your lap top without asking her permission first?

I ask this question because I have a DJ who has really pissed me off by copying a few of my CD's onto his laptop (which he brings in) without asking me, and then plays the shit out of the songs I worked so hard to find to be original! SHEESH... I will be the first to admit that I do not claim to own any song whatsoever, but when its me spending the time and effort and money to find songs that are different, unique and my flavor only to find them in his personal collection really irks me.

Most girls I work with, we will all check with eachother if there are certain songs that we all like, but this DJ really crosses my lines...

Am I wrong to be this pissy about this?

And its always some half ass DJ who's new at the club and ends up fired soon after and left to spread your hard sought music all over the local clubs. The decent DJs always ask you first.

There are times when a dancer quits the club and leaves her CDs behind. At that time, I'll make a copy of any songs I think are good and put the CD in the club's collection.

The decent DJ's have your music already if its mainstream.

Most professional dj's can get mainstream radio,rock,r/b rap and techno music long before you could hear it on MTV or local radio.Thats why you tip him out at the end of the night. He should be comming to you with the new stuff IMO.
With all the stuff entertainers have to remember in their dancebags,cd's shouldnt be one of them.
If you have something out of the norm that he doesnt have,I would suggest bringing it in and letting him put it on his computer for you to use if your cd gets lost/broken/forgot at home or in the car.
If you bring it in,I would think your dj would only play it for you.

Hate to burst your professional bubble but most high school kids get music before its released nowadays.

As a DJ and journalist I've found that a lot of stuff makes it to P2P before my promo copy even arrives.

    No bubble burst,just chit chat.
I get most of my music before release, almost all of it.
I agree alot goes to p2p fast, but then thats illegal music downloads and i dont play it or load it on my comps.I know thats considered retarded by some of the jocks I work with and most of the free world, but NASCAP doesnt. bottom line is its stealing.I dont need the drama, and i dont want to add to the clubs drama by bringing it in.
With all the different music sources dj's have, its rare that they dont have one first. At least i dont run into that problem often.
Besides,if its p2p,it was probably some dj with a music service who tossed it on the internet first.

You can also add that if they get a song before the dj and before the radio/mtv assorted platforms, most of their crowd wont know it and wont relate to it.So its rare that it could be considered playing to the crowd.

yes it is just chit chat.

I think that the reason music gets to P2P before the promos are sent has more to do with in label leaks. I write a lot about hip hop and virtually all hip hop LPs get leaked before the promos are sent... so it has to be someone in house doing it.

When I DJ I use vinyl... but I've been known to DL a prerelease for review if:
    a) the label/management is slow on sending it to me
    b) the label/management are being stingy and don't want to send promos to freelance journalists (it happens with some of the bigger acts)

Yea that happens alot. Its a shame imo.
The artist is losing so much money its incredible.Sometimes its done on purpose, but i would agree that its usually some guy sitting in the control room with the master tapes.

The amount of money lost to up and comming bands is staggering.Pretty soon its going to be impossible to make money as an entertainer putting out an album.

it's probably the guys at the mastering plants. my buddy works at a video duplication firm that dupes a lot of screeners and he always dupes a copy for himself of whatever film is being duped.

he doesn't share or sell them though

A DJ in town copies our CDs and sells them to other girls. Very annoying- I don't label my CDs anymore, just 'Schoolgirl set- track 1,2,3,4; Devil set, tracks 5,6,7,8' and so on. Because he can't sell it if he doesn't know what it is, haha.

Most underground dance music is not ASCAP protected. These lables exist solely because DJ's play their music. If you download Madonna or Prince you could get busted, but Downloading the latest House track will not. Also, these artists get payed a flat fee, maybe %400-$2000 per track. They do not make royalties, except the huge names like PVD or Sasha.

Ok i agree and see your point.

But how much of that kind of music is in your clubs format??
A little here and there, but for the most part, most clubs are along mainstream music if your playing to your crowd.
I dont see alot of clubs filled with ravers and club kids.

    Scorpio-

A lot of the artists put out their own music on their own labels (Morgan Geist owns Environ, Garth owns Grayhound, the Idjuts own Discfuntion/USTAR etc.....) I think its worse to rip off the DIY producers than to take a WEA track every now and then.

Justify your theft anyway you want... you are still a criminal... and worse - you're shopliting from a mom and pop shop instead of WAL-MART.

I see your point, but realise that if artista had any kind of business mind (and 99% of them don't) They would realise that P2P equals huge exposure. Most downloads are crappy quality, incomplete, or don't offer all mixes or releases by that artist. When I download a track and like it, I will forever be on the look out for that artists releases, and that will lead to purchases. I spin on CD, and downloads make up maybe 30% of my tracks. I mostly buy vinyl and burn to CD, so I can control the quality.

We rip the dancers CD to the computer HD and play it from digital so in effect we copy ALL dancer CD's BUT ...... We copy them to a file for the specific dancer and her use only. That and the huge ASCAP and BMI fees we pay cover all our liability. If the dancer quits her file is dispersed to the main database for use by all.

It's true that many garage band productions are not ASCAP or BMI members but just because they don't distribute through a major production company does NOT mean they aren't protected by copyright laws. The questionis how much is the EXPOSURE worth to these independants? Many of these virtual unknown bands WANT thier music to be heard (and downloaded). When they decide they have enough exposure and wanna be paid .... register with ASCAP, BMI or police your own distribution. The artists have some responsibility too. It's not the governments job to babysit thier whiny asses.

    Scorpio-

your 2nd argument makes a lot more sense. I too will often download a track by an artist I read about or hear about before purchasing their record. Once I like something I will often track down as much by that artist as I can, as well as check out other releases on the label to see if they have a similar vibe.

This is how P2P works for the independent artist.

Unfortunately, it also works against them. J-Live lost pretty much everything he invested on his first LP "The Best Part" due to a major internet leak (by Cipherdivne in the pre-Napster days.)

He's only now digging himself out of that hole.
