Default Anyone Have Experience With Charity Fundraising?

I'm working with a local AIDS charity in Hawaii and we have a fundraising event coming-up in July.

I signed-up to participate and everyone has a goal of, at least, $2500 which must be raised before the event starts on July 17.

Unfortunately, just about everyone I was counting on to donate has brushed me off. I have raised some money, but I'm far short of my goal.

It seems to me that most of the people I ask have a problem with the nature of the charity organisation, since they work with AIDS victims. One person I asked for a donation from gave me the "people with AIDS are getting what they deserve" lecture. After that, I felt so down that I nearly dropped-out of the event myself.

I tried posting letters to the editors of the local newspapers, but most won't publish them. One might, but its a weekly paper, not a daily, so I have to wait and see the next issue to find-out if they come through for me or not.

I've gotten donations as large as $100 and as small as $10. Unfortunately, the donations are few and far between and I'm feeling more than a little discouraged at this point.

Anyone have ideas? If you have experience raising money for AIDS charities, I'd especially like to hear from you.

I have sat on the United Way Volunteer Review Board for many years, as well as the Cancer Society and MS Boards as well, as I have family members who were stricken with Cancer and MS.

I do not have any experience with fund raising for AIDS, but feel free to PM me and I will share all of what we have done in the past for the other charities I listed.

It can get frustrating, but it is a great thing to be a part of.

WOW! Gynger.. You rock even more after I read this, I tell ya. My mother has had MS (Multiple Sclerosis) since the age of 16. She was the youngest reported case way back when. She's an honorary member of the MS Society now, as opposed to back when she could "furniture walk" before stricken with encephalitus (believe it or not, she contracted it through contact with my little brother & sister when they had Chicken Pox). Before that, when she could get around, she was on the board officially, helping others who needed it. She does things now for them, organizing donations for their annual Christmas party (phone calls to companies from her own bed). It's a very good cause to donate to, and I do regularly.

Another cause I'm active in, is the March Of Dimes. In my past posts, I have discussed it a bit. But, I was born with Hydrocephalus (diagnosed at 3 months). I had 3 revisions of the shunt, and finally, I've been shunt-free since '97. Without the help of MOD, my parents would have been swimming in medical debt well into their elderly years. I donate to them monthly, in a way to "give something back".

DJ, I commend you on your work with AIDS. It definitely takes a strong person. My husband's uncle and his partner are both HIV positive. I can't stand the ignorant statements like "They deserve it" and the like.

I wish that I could give you some useful resources on how to get more donations, but unfortunately, I've never organized anything, I've only sent my donations into existing charity groups.

I wish you lots of luck though, the world could use a few more like you.

Well, I had to do a lot of fund raising in High School for Dollars for Scholars and other organizations. One of the things we did is got together and started calling people straight out of the phone book. And, no, these people are NOT protected by a national "do not call list" because A) you are an individual calling B) you are getting their number from a public source and most importantly, C) you are doing this for charity not profit. You'll get a hell of a lot of no's and a bunch of angry hang ups, but if you get some donations, it's usually worth it. The only problem with that is that you are only one person which makes it mighty hard (we had a whole group there for a weekend and we live in a small town). Another thing we did, is print up a general information flier and send it out to all the local businesses asking for personal and/or company donations. Stupid question, and I don't know if it would be legal/allowed....but have you thought about wearing small advertisements for companies who donate to the cause? I just thought that maybe since it's a bike ride, if you put stickers or patches or whatever on yourself and/or your bike, some companies might be more willing to help out (they love getting recognition). It's kind of a NASCAR time thing--you sponsor, we put your name on the car.

Just some ideas, don't know if they'll help!

    Good luck!

    Thanks, SCGirl.

I appreciate every bit of help towards the goal.

Working as a bike messenger is how I have been training for the Ride in July.

The Ride will cover 60 miles a day for six days. I ride an average of 40+ miles a day, five days a week.

So, I'm in better shape today than I was when I first signed-up.

    Thanks again, SCGirl.

Oh, you should contact the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. They could probably give you some pointers or help.

Saying that people with AIDS deserve it is just a horrible thing to say. There are a lot of children born with AIDS who have never done anything to even get AIDS. A lot of people are still in the dark about what AIDS is and how people get it (blood transfusions, etc).

I've done charity work for the St. Jude Children's Hospital, but never with an AIDS charity. Hope that the EGPA can help you!!

You could try fundraising tactics where your are not asking for charity, but charging for a service and proceeds go to charity... You can charge more but people are OK with it because it is for a good cause.

if you DJ at a club, ask a couple of the girls to donate their afternoon for an AIDS charity carwash... charge $10-$20 to have your car washed by really hot chicks PLUS the money goes to charity... who wouldn't do it? The gas station will usually donate the water and the space, and a grocery store will donate the soap, etc. $2500 should be no problem.

PM me the charity name and your address and I'll mail you a check for $50.00.
One asshole shouldn't discourage you keep up the good work.
I used to own a bar (7500 square feet) and since we were dead on Saturday afternoons I would let charities use the bar as a fundraising tool. They could get the kegs of beer donated (beer is 80% tax so the distributor could write it off and a $50 keg of beer is only a $10 cost), you can buy those cardboard boxed wines and the bar should give you the coke and stuff from the gun (they are cheap). I would donate pizzas (its' all markup) but maybe you can get a pizza place to donate or cut you a deal. Charge $20.00 per person maybe $30 per couple and have a 4-6 hour party noon to 6p.m . All you have to do is tip the bartender(s) and doormen.
These parties worked out great for me and the charities. i found that many people came fashionably late and everyone doesn't leave at 6 when the bar starts charging. I would always ask my bar employess if they did OK on tips and they always did so I didn't have to pony up any money to keep them happy. I don't think you can do this at a strip club but find a little tavern type bar that is dead in the afternoons. The regulars of the bar will get a great deal (keg beer, wine and pop only) and the owner will get some people coming to his bar and they will ALL get a great impression of the bar and many would stop back in the future on weeknights or whenver.
As owner I did it for the charity but the sell to a bar owner should be easy.
    Good Luck

I work with a fundraising professional...he has some great ideas and can share them with you if you want - normally he is a consultant for groups and leads them through the process, but if you want to do it on your own that's cool with him (just don't go competing too much LOL - he has to eat too).

These ideas are not so much how to make money for this event - but whatother things a group can do to make bux and get more attention.

I just finished doing a bikini car wash with some of the other ladies from my club. The proceeds went to a childrens' fair that will take place in September to teach kids about drugs, peace, etc. We all worked on tips alone and didn't make much money, but that wasn't the point. It was so much fun and totally worth it. I love helping kids. I make enough money that one day to help charity isn't going to kill me.

For those who have made a donation and/or offered fundraising suggestions, I thought you might be interested in the route we will be taking as of Sunday, the 18th.

This will be my last post for a week or so, as I leave tomorrow.

I copied and pasted this route info from the Paradise Ride website.

    ITINERARY

Each day's ride is described in general detail, including the campground information. Please note, we are still finalizing some of the logistical arrangements, so this may change slightly between now and the start of the ride.

For maps, please refer to: http://bestofhawaii.com/maps/maps.shtml
these maps provide sufficient detail to describe the general route each day, although not the specific roads we will be taking. The route description uses landmarks identified on these maps.

Day 1: Sunday July 18: Oahu

Riders will be staying at the Marriott Waikiki Beach Hotel in Waikiki on Saturday night. On Sunday the riders will ride from Waikiki Beach headed east over Diamond Head, continuing east past Haunauma Bay and Sandy Beach to Makapuu Beach, where the road turns toward the northwest. The ride continues through Kailua, then Kaneohe, and follows the coastline up to Punaluu. Riders then turn around ride back to Kuuloa Beach Park, which is the camping ground for that night. The total distance for this day is 67 miles. The bicycles will be shipped to Maui Sunday evening, and the riders will travel by bus to the Honolulu Airport early Monday morning for a flight to Maui.

Day 2: Monday, July 19: Maui and Molokai

Riders will arrive at the Maui airport at Kahului at 8:30 am, get their bikes at the air cargo area of the airport, and be ready to ride around 9:30 am. From the airport riders will ride southwest across the isthmus of the island to Maalea, and then follow the road to the northwest to Lahaina. We will load all the bikes and gear on a ferry in Lahaina to cross over to the island of Molokai. This ride is 25 miles, and riders need to be at the ferry for a 12:30 pm departure.

The ferry will arrive at the Kaunakakai Wharf at around 2:15 pm. We anticipate that after unloading the ferry, riders will be able to be on the road around 3:00 or 3:15 pm. Riders will ride from Kaunakakai to the west and then to the north, climbing up to the Palaau Park, which overlooks Kalaupapa. This is a 10 mile ride, of which about 7 miles is uphill. The view over Kalaupapa is spectacular. From there it is a fast descent back to the campground at Kiowea Beach Park, which is located adjacent to the Kapuaiwa Grove, and 1.2 miles west of Kaunakakai. The total miles for the afternoon are 19 miles, with the day's total of 44 miles.

Day 3: Tuesday July 20: Molokai

On this day riders will head west toward Maunaloa, with a 3 mile climb up, and then dropping back down to the ocean for 6 miles to Popohaku Beach Park for lunch. This is a beautiful beach three miles long with almost no one on it. Total mileage to lunch is just over 19 miles. From here it is a 6 mile climb back out to the main road, and then back to Kiowea Beach Park, pushing against what can be strong headwinds, for the second night camping. For those that want to ride additional miles, two options, each 7 miles long, will be open to riders. Total miles, without the options, are 38.2 miles.

Day 4: Wednesday, July 21: Molokai and Maui

Riders ride from the Kiowea Beach Park back to the Kaunakakai Wharf, catching the ferry back to Lahaina, Maui at 10:00 am. The ferry arrives back at Maui at 11:45 am, with riders back on the road hopefully by 12:30 pm. Riders head northwest from Lahaina past Kaanapali to Kapalua for lunch, and then continue around the West Maui mountain to arrive back in Kahului. This is a 41-mile ride with a good amount of climbing. Riders will camp that night at the Maui War Memorial Stadium Complex in Kahului. The bicycles will be shipped to Kauai that night.

Day 5: Thursday, July 22: Maui and Kauai

Riders will take a bus to the Kahului Airport for the 8:30 am departure to Lihue, Kauai. Riders will collect their bikes from the air cargo section of the airport, and ride southwest from Lihue to Hanapepe, heading off the main highway to visit the Spouting Horn and Poipu Beach for lunch. The ride finishes at the Salt Pond Beach Park in Hanapepe, where the riders will camp for the night. Total mileage for the day is 44 miles. Those that would like to ride additional miles have the option of continuing on to Waimea and back for an additional 11 miles total.

Day 6: Friday, July 23: Kauai

Riders depart Salt Pond headed east back through Lihue, continuing on through Wailua and Ka-paa to the Kealia Lookout. From here the ride turns inland, climbing up to the lunch stop at Kapahi Ball Park (not shown on the map). This part of the ride is up and down, with an optional segment of 7 miles (roundtrip) further inland, with a few steep climbs. Riders then return back to the main coastal road, heading back towards Lihue for the finish at the Kauai Radisson Beach Resort for the closing ceremonies. Total miles for the day are 47 miles without the option, and 54 miles with the option. Riders have the option of staying at the Kaua`i Radisson Beach Resort that evening; you may access the reservation link on our home page.

Well, I'm back. I got back Friday night.

Overall, the event was a success. We araised over $200,000 for three agencies that help people with AIDS/HIV in Hawaii and the donations are still coming in for other Riders. My own goal came-up $800 sort.

I appreciate everyone from STRIPPERWEB who offered fundraising advice and made donations. I sincerely appreciate your help. I couldnt have gotten as far along without your help.

We rode about 360 miles across four islands in Hawaii: Oahu, Maui, Molokai and Kauai. Up and down mountains.

We didnt have to ride in the rain, but the sun beat down on us all day long. We all used sunscreen, but despite the label, it does wash-off. I watched as my sunscreen flowed right off my arm in rivers of sweat. I got back home much darker than when I had left.

At night, sleeping arraingments varied on our location.

On the first night, when we had our initial gathering and briefings, we stayed at the Waikiki Beach Marriot. I lucked into a room by myself when my scheduled roommate didnt show for the event. Nice room.

Second night, we camped a Kuuloa Beach Park. Very pretty, but swarming with flies and the ground was covered in a thick layer of dead leaves, which made walking difficult at night. It was very beautiful at night, when we looked up into the night sky and saw so many stars.

Third and fourth night, we camped on Molokai at Kiowea Beach Park. The night sky was filled with more stars, due to far less city street lighting on that island. There was a problem with ants all over the place and the camp shower was dirty, but there was a building acoss the street, where we ate our meals, where we could shower in relative comfort. I met a previously unknown relative on Molokai, a first cousin whom I had never met before. We spent a lot of money at a local ice cream store and in the local town.

Fifth night, we camped in a baseball field on Maui in the War Memorial Stadium. Some Riders complained about the lack of ambiance - not being a real campsite - but the showers were better and we didnt have to deal with insects.

On the sixth night, we camped at Salt Pond Beach Park in Hanapepe. A beautiful place, though lacking privacy in the showers, which were typical open air showers that you find at any beach. A temporary enclosed shower was set-up for us to use.

Meals were good and food was plentiful. Drinks consisted of Gatorade, water, fruit juice and milk. Pretty much everyone was tired of Gatorade when we were done with the Ride. No alcohol was allowed during the event. Food was simple and consisted of chicken, pork, rice, some beef, various kinds of prepared potatos, lots of fruit and bread. No one complained about the food, as we didnt expect gourmet meals to be served. It was good enough to keep us going. Lots of carbohydrates and protein. Food was healthy, though not fancy. The menu varied from day to day, to keep us from getting tired of having the same thing every day.

When it was all over, we gathered, one last time, at the Radisson Hotel on Kauai. The food served was extremely good. We took pictures and hugged one another. Award were given for the top fundraisers and for friends and support crew who were so very helpful to us. Some of us - though, not me - took the microphone to express our deepest appreciation for all our friends, to speak of our reasons for being there and to speak of friends and relatives who had died of AIDS. After singing "Aloha Oe" altogether, we departed to where each of us needed to be. I had to fly out that night and others went to their hotle rooms to prepare for the night's going away party.

A beautiful and moving experience. One that I will always treasure and I look forward to going next year for Paradise Ride 2005..

Thanks again for all your help.

I got this photo of all the people who rode in Paradise Ride 2004.

It was taken while we were on Moloka'i. I'm in the back row.

I'm also including another photo, which gives a better picture of me. I'm the one in the USPS jersey.

I know it's late, but I was going through some of my photos and I realised that I had neglected to post any pics for the people from SW who had made contributions on my behalf.

I had my share so far, and will do more. Had a fundraiser to buy 1 police dog a bullet proof vest. The money had to go for another K-9 who was needed because the other one got killed.

Here in Fl. it's very hot for our "Police dogs to wear vests."

Also for "Voices for Animals," a well known animal rescue, no kill org.

And of course i am a HUGE PETA donator!!!! And buyer, and plan on doing a fundraiser for them this summer!!!! So excited!
