    Default My Big Toes

    :'(

I have no idea what is going on but my big toes are numb. I do have issues due to herniated disks but I don't have the usual accompanying leg numbness/tingling so i'm confused.

Is the whole numb toe thing a common dancer ailment? Any input ladies?

sounds like possible nerve damage from the shoes you are wearing and what you are doing in them...

It might not be permanent yet...but it could become that way...i would go see an othropedist(i think thats the right doctor).

Just my input...i dont have any experience with big toes personally...but i have had similar experiences with other parts of my foot...from playing basketball in sneakers without enough support and havning flat feet.

Best to get it checked right away.

My toes go numb if i over do it.. when they start to feel like that take a break and massauge your feet really well.. I suggest going to get a massauge and seeing if that helps.. it helped me.. also it might be your shoes are to tight.. or maybe they need padding?

Are you wearing closed or open toe shoes? Closed toe seems to do this more than open.

Periodically throughout the night, you should take a break and massage your feet. The narrowness of most stripper plats can take its toll on the toes. If it lasts for too much longer, I would go to a foot specialist (podiatrist).

If you have herniated disks you do have to be aware of leg pain/numbness but since that's not the case and since it's your big toe, I'm going with if you are wearing close toed shoes especially that they are too tight. Some people's feet are just turned in and especially if you are an exotic dancer that is pigeontoed with your feet turned in that's the worst and will make your feet scream. If you wear any non high heeled shoes like sneakers you can tell how your feet wear by looking at the bottoms, mine wear on the inside of the heels and at the balls of my feet. There is a slight risk of tarsal tunnel syndrome of the ankle but I'm thinking that it's just from wearing pointy stilleto type shoes that don't fit right, or your toes are possibly slipping forward, in that case you need to get the gel metatarsal pads, they have them that stick to the ball of your foot. Sometimes also if you have a bunion (sometimes they are not visible yet just an enlarged big toe joint) that can give you problems as well, there are nerves on the outside of that toe. I hope that you can get help, if you have a larger club sometimes they have a massage therapist, if not I would seek one. Also it could be that your joint capsules in your big toes are stiff, see if you can crack them with your toes pointing down. I hope this is advice you can use and I hope it feels better

It could still be a back problem even if you don't have leg pains or numbness. I had a simular thing which has improved alot after chiropractic treatment (- lower back and nothing that terrible.) I wasn't really aware that my big toes had so little feeling until the chiropractor looked at them.

I am sorry you had this problem, I never said that it wasn't a back issue, because most of the nerves that control the rest of your body run along your spine it could be a problem with a herniated disk. Generally though if the problem is as localized as one toe generally it's best to start at the foot and work up to troubleshoot the problem. Generally also if it's a problem in your back there would be a bit of numbness elsewhere in your legs too. She should get treatments like chiro and massage on a regular basis due to her disks, it will now be a permanent part of your life to stay healthy. I'm glad that chiro helped you out, quite frankly the human body isn't a simple organism, there are many muscles, bones, nerves, tendons, etc and if you remember the really old Christmas lights you can have a light go out (herniated disc) and then none of the lights past that point wouldn't work due to the old style of circuitry and once you herniate a disk you definitely set off a long chain reaction, if you have an obvious issue like a disc problem it's kind've implied that you start there, I just made other suggestions if that's not it.

I have the same issue no matter what type of dancer shoe I wear. I believe it's because of the foot sliding forward, due to the height of the heal. When that happens, the toes get scrunched together and the big toe is constantly having pressure applied from the shoe itself. Just my experince.

hmmmm about a month ago, a HUGE patch on my thigh went really numb. like i couldnt even feel my leg in that area when i shaved!! haha it was weird as, but i ignored it,cos it didnt tingle or hurt, and its still slightly numb now...its been fading away since.
maybe that had something to do with my back?! ive never had anything like that before.

numb toes would be a lil scary.

I used to wear closed toe shoes and that would happen. Now i have open slides and they easily slide off, ill just slip my feet out and put then on top of the shoe when sitting.. I always taken them off when doing dances or just sitting around so I have no problems anymore since I typically only have them on when dancing on stage or walking around.

COULD be a back problem but you may want to try a slide so you can slip them on and off easily throughout the night. I also get a slide 1 size up from my reg shoe size tho sometimes they accidentally slip off when Im on stage. If youre already wearing slides I dunno

If you don't mind I will give you my professional opinion as I am a doctor: Disc pressure on a nerve can give you numbness OR tingling OR pain OR weakness OR muscle spasm OR all of the above. You CAN have individual symptoms with a disc pinching a nerve you don't have to have pain at all. Numbness in the big toe is usually indicative of an L5 disc protrusion/herniation. Can it be from wearing close toed shoes? Absolutely! But with a history of disc herniations, that is the more likely cause. Get in and see a Chiropractor! If that does not help you need to see a neurologist...not an orthopedist! Good luck!
