Default Christian fundamentalists want to make South Carolina their own sovereign nation

A newly-formed group of Christian activists has begun plans to encourage up to 12,000 like-minded individuals to move to South Carolina. Their hope is to eventually withdraw that state from the United States and "reestablish the sovereign Christian nation of South Carolina."

    http://www.nbc4.tv/family/3403144/detail.html

Sounds like a good plan to me. Concentrating them in one state would deplete their masses in the other 49. Hell, I hope they get 12 million to sign up.

If you live in South Carolina of course, that would kind of suck though.

Here's the group's website. Good for a laugh.

HA! Classic.. That wouldn't be a bad idea. They can all be contained in one area, and they'd leave the rest of us alone.

    Thanks for sharing, Doc

ROFL Melonie! Well, I'm glad to know it's not only happening in RI. The way they vote for increased benefits here, is just to produce more offspring. When hubby worked for "Ripoff Center" (Rent-A-Center), you wouldn't believe how many customers would come in and pay for their rentals with the BULK of their EBT cards. Ugh.

I think these people need to do a little more research in Law and History.

There was another group of people, I believe they were part of the White Seperatist Movement, who advocated their supporters moving to the Pacific Northwest States of Oregon and Washington, where they would secede from the United STates and form their own country. Of course, they never got very far with it and both of those States are still, firmly in the Union.

Once admitted to the Union, a State cannot simply leave. There is nothing in the Constitution about removing States from the Union, only for admitting them into it.

The Federal Government would never allow any State to leave, even if the majority of the people there wanted to withdraw. Given the sheer amount of Federal interest in any of its States - economics, military bases, Post offices and the resulting political instability caused by allowing a State to leave - the Federal Government would use force, if neccessary, to retain the attempted breakaway, which it has done in the past.

While South Carolina has a long history of being rebellious - first, against the British Empire and, later, against the United States which culminated in the Civil War - overwhelmingly, the people of South Carolina are not going to support seccesion this time.

Even during the Civil War in the Confederate States there was opposition to seccesion and tens of thousands of Southerners opposed the Confederate Government, many joining the Union Army at the first opportunity.

While there are people in various States today - including Hawaii and various Southern States - which call for their State to leave the Union, the vast majority of people in all those States support the Union and would never take the idea of seccesion seriously. Many, in fact, would fight to remain in the Union, if seccesion did ever occur.

Like the largest pro-seccesion group I know about, the League of the South, this group will probably remain on the fringes of Society with little support and never to be taken seriously.

If you tire of the evangelistic arrogance, come to Boulder, Colorado, where you can have your fill of the liberalistic arrogance.

They are going to need a lot of converts!! In the year 2000 there were 1.4 million votes cast for President in SC. Given only maybe 60% of registered voters vote. They would need close to 1,4 million to win in a knockdowndragout. Since the state house is 60-40 they are going to have to be spread out across at least half the state.

They would do better to try to take over a smaller target, like say RI or Montana or Delaware. they can have the Dakotas, but I don't think they would want to go to a place called The badlands.

Oh, I'd love to see them try it here, Monty.. heh.. They wouldn't stand a chance. Let them have the Dakotas or the other places.

Cant we give them their own island, so that whole "secession" thing isn't brought back? We, um, difintively answered that back in 1865

Hell.. give em Staten Island. It already stinks, so their addition really wont be much of a change.

I somehow don't see this working realistically. It is a nice goal if you have nothing better to do with your time. OTOH, when Missouri was hemming and hawing about the whole slavery issue the entire county where my college is located seceded from the state. Today they still call it The Kingdom of Callaway. So, there may be hope for those people yet if they start small say like secession of a county or small town b/4e they attempt to take the whole state. And of course later on the county rejoined the rest of the state.

Hey, I have an idea...let's let them have the state...we'll put up barbed wire to keep the bible thumpers from crossing back into the states (not likely that "normal" people would want to go into that state now...LOL). Then we'll send "encrypted, top secret" info around the world that THIS is where America's new government is. If any terrorists want to hurt the US, the worst thing they could do would be dropping a bomb here. And, then...presto...they're gone!

um, can we ship em to alabama instead??? Since I just defected across the border from Charlotte for cheaper property taxes I would rather the psychos not roost here in South Cackilacky. It's bad enough putting up with rednecks and hicks...and all the transplanted Ohio-ans!! (I can say that b/c my hubby is one lol)

I'm all for it. If the real crazies all go to SC, we can keep the decent majority of Christians here, and they can have their theocracy where it won't hurt anyone but them.

    I say !!

Spoken like a true southerner indeed. Bet most of you didn't know that two of the states are misprinted on the map and should be North Cackilacky and South Cacilacky. BTW, I think Alabama is a good neutral place and Mississippi blocks it from touching the part of my state where I live so DOWN WITH BAMA!!!!

Well NC has so many transplants I think it has lost its cackilacky, and a lot of us Charlotteans got pushed to SC.

I'm all for Bama being the chosen state. It has got to be the worst state I have ever been to!! Or as a runner up, perhaps Arkansas???

Well, just move for a little while. Having them in SC would aid the terrorists in the "extermination". After all of the bombing is done...and we all have spent our time grieving...lol...then, I am sure that the property taxes will be even lower than before...see? It all works out.
