Default Where do I get a copy of my credit report online?

Hey I used to have all the phone numbers and websites that you can get a copy of your credit report from, but I have no idea where they are!

I was wondering if anyone has a telephone # or website where I can. I obviously only want to do this once b/c I know everytime your credit is looked up it looks bad, but I have a credit card company that is being a little shady about a late payment that should have been changed. Thanks!

there are lots of place, but I think this is a good one to start

    http://loan.yahoo.com/c/

and it's probably better for your credit report to check it periodically than not just because if there's something incorrect on it, you can fix it before it negatively affects you

You might want to try freecreditreport.com. I've heard good things about them (and will be using them soon myself). A good source of lots of consumer information is http://clarkhoward.com/. Clark Howard also has a great radio show, if its on in your area.

Not to disput Josh's assessment but there were a couple of flags that went up when I read the terms and conditions. To get the "free" report you agree to subscribe to the service unless you cancel.

I think this practice sucks and is like the "free 45 days " of AOL or MSN where they charge you if you do not cancel EXACTLY like they want you to cancel or you pay $120 a year. they will bill you (or try to) if you do not quit the account soon enough in the 30 days!!

Rant follows. I got a free 90 days of AOL when I bought a laptop, and it took me 20 minutes of talking to the customer rep to cancel the damn thing before I could get them to say "You are cancelled and here is the confirmation number". I finally got it by threatening to file a complaint with the Attorney General of Mass (who loves to sue people and pocket blackmaile).! You can not cancel this crap by email or pushing a button on a web site--you have to cancel the way they want to. They could even make you send a certified letter if they want to (I doubt they do but they COULD).

I had to go through a debit card statement with a fine tooth comb for a year because MSN tried to trick me into one of these. The computer sales person took an impression of my card and handed me the thing to sign, which I thought was for the computer.

True...I should have warned that they will want to sign you up for a year of their credit monitoring service. Its up to each individual to decide if they want that (or, if you're me, to remember to call to cancel it). From what I've heard, they are pretty easy going about canceling the one year. Its different than the 90 days free AOL, IMO, in that you got the AOL with the machine whether you wanted it or not, while here you're voluntarily asking for the service, so you have to be the responsible one to cancel it.

And, from the stack of unordered CDs I have from various music clubs, its obvious I'm less than perfect at this.

Thanks for the info/warnings. I looked at the one site but balked when they asked for a credit card # to wait for a better time when I could truly read everything thoroughly. I haven't gotten the chance to continue looking yet though.

    Thanks!

I feel ya on the AOL shindig. I tried the new version for 45 days just to see what it was like. I had AOL a few years ago and I remember that it was totally useful so I decided to check it out. Turned out that everything I could get for paying AOL I could get for free such as email address, AIM and all that fun stuff. Why pay if I can have it for free? So when I canceled it took forever for them to finally agree. They were offering me more crap and asking that I keep my account. Then when it finally canceled they called my house everyday for about 2 weeks telling me that I could come back to AOL blah blah blah. I told them from day one that I wasnt at all remotely interested, I even threatened them to legally do something about it but they kept calling. Finally I was fed up and one day they called. I just said "she died" and theyve never called back. LOL

I need to issue a partial retraction, and say I think I agree with Ryan on how to get the report.

I'm talking to my wife yesterday and out of the blue she says "Boy, Clark Howard really hates freecreditreport.com." I say "I thought he liked them." "Nope", she replies, "they changed their policies and he thinks they try to soak people for money now and there is not 'free' report." So, since I respect Clark Howard, I'll respect his change in opinion and say "don't take my earlier advice regarding freecreditreport.com."

Ryan's right. I went with Experian.com, then contacted my bank about a overdraft protection line of credit I started last year, then voluntarily reduced the limit of. Apparently it's beneficial to have a larger amount of availiable credit. I raised it from it's voluntary level of 500 back up to the initial line of 3000, in the hopes that it will boost the PLUS score from 730 up to something higher.

While on the phone with them, I asked if it made much sense to get a credit report from all 3 - or if I was better off just going ahead and sticking with Experian for the time being. They asked if I didn't see any cards on the report that I currently had, and the answer was no... had it been yes, they would have recommended I purchase or request via mail (which is free up to 3 times per year) reports from the other agencies.

Another thing about experian is that they have a 30 day trial. Though the credit affiliate 'freecreditreport' has been blasted (which I agree with), I had no problem cancelling my 1 month trial membership to Experian 10 minutes after printing out my credit report. Even if I hadn't, 10 bucks isn't that much - just a few minutes on top of the bar in my undies...

*edit: I spoke with my credit card company - not bank - a few seconds ago and the guy said that they had a person on 60 minutes who was given copies of her credit report from each of the 3 companies - the first 2 she was okay with, but the third showed her as having several thousand dollars of loans she'd never taken out - for boats in Florida and the like. So, I guess it's off to the other 2 websites to sign up for (then cancel) the trials... I guess I'm cheap.

You might also want to try http://www.myfico.com. I heard it mentioned on a radio show recently. I don't know much about it, although I think its supposed to be free. This is not a recommendation, just information.

Hey Bishop, is that Spike in your avatar?

Experian is the company most creditors use, especially car loans, bank loans, credit cards, store cards. If getting a mortgage, they will check all 3. I advise anyone to spend the 27 bucks and get a copy of all 3 in the mail before going for a mortgage. It may just be me but I like to have the actual real document in front of me, not view it online.

BTW, to save yourself the 27 dollars, you can sent the big 3 a letter stating that you feel there is fraud on you credit file and by law they have tosend you a free one. Or you can tell them you are on welfare, or you can tell them you are unemployed and will be seeking employment........

    OK, that is all.

PS, here's a freel sample letter:

I am requesting a copy of my credit file. I am currently unemployed and will be seeking employment within the next 30 days. My social security number is 123-456-7890. My mailing address is at the top of the page. I have enclosed a photocopy of my social security card and my driver license for identification purposes. Thank you

    Sincerely,

    Ryan,
I know it is just a typo but I got a real chuckle when reading your letter and got to the point where it said "sigh here". somehow it is just appropiate as is. I would reccommend caution in fibbing to get it for free since your letter "could" go into your file since it is a voluntary submission and your id is authenicated. At least do not use fibs which could be considered bad.

monty, by law if you are going tobe seeking employment in the next 30 days, they have to send you a free copy of you credit file. How would this be construed as bad or as being a fib. They could never prove that you weren't considering applying for a new job becasue only you would know that. If anyone ever says anything, which they won't, just say you were thinking about applying for a new job, but you changed your mind....

You are right RYAN, I was refer4ring to the on welfare or unemployed fibs. That one and the suspicion of identity theft present no issues. If you say you are applying for a job, jsut make sure you do not used the name Vandelay Industries. Too many Seinfeld fans out there.

I just checked mine with myfico.com. NOT free, but very easy to read and they create dispute letters for you.

BTW, checking your own report does NOT reflect badly on you. It's only bad when people who may provide you with credit check your file.
