Default e-machines and the like...

my window to the world has been acting up a little lately...i really need to upgrade (or buy a new one)...but...well...anyway...

a co-worker told me about e-machines...and fully loaded pc's without all the bells and whisle type software that i don't need...like games and stuff...so i was wondering if they were worth buying...since i would have to buy software (like antivirus and firewall type stuff) to install...

a machine like this would work for me...if they were worth the investment...cheaper than buying a whole new pc...i'd have the power and space that i need...and would have a choice as to what software i wanted...

anyway...anybody know about these type of computers?..
Why do some people still have to fight...to get the same opportunities...that are given to others??...

Look out for self...because noone else will...AND

I had an emachine that served me well for about 3 years. Never had problems with it and was able to upgrade the memory on it (it came with only 64k) and it was great! Much cheaper than buying a "brand".

We just bought my dad an e-machines computer for his birthday. My brother, who is an editor for PC Magazine, recommended it, and I'll assume he knows what he's talking about.

My original was an emachine. It was stolen after three years of no problems, and I replaced it with another emachine.

I had an E-Machine comp and it worked well for the first year or so, then the little fan in the tower died and caused my hard drive to fry itself. The power suppy too, it was the power suppy fan that went bad. After that every thing started breaking on it, system-wide instability. they are a fairly good comp though, but they do have some sub-standard parts, so be warned. But to be fair, I purchased mine in 1999 and it was only $300, had a big hard drive, and a top-of-the-line 3D card.(the 3D card itself retailed for $249). But I'm happy with my HP I have now, well at least for now...

I had and in fact still do have(its sitting collecting dust in the corner) an emachine that I bought for a few hundred bucks a couple years ago.
At the time its technology was about a generation out of date and no fancy bells and whistles but it served me fine for basic office work and surfing the net for years.
The GF even used it for a while when she was working webcam stuff.

I always try to avoid buying the top of the line computer..as it is going to be technically out of date (replaced by a fster machine) in 6 months anyways.

Just my 2 cents

Well, I guess I'll be the lone dissenter here. Full disclosure, I used to do a lot of PC support (still do on the side). Myself, I'd only use a custom-built machine, but for the average user out there, the HP a-series machines are cheap and pretty damn good.

E-Machines are shit. Pathetic quality control, use of non-standard parts and notoriously poor power supply and regulation.

That said, they were just bought by Gateway, so perhaps there'll be some changes in store for them.

Two cents.

I've had my Compaq for three years plus now, and have had to replace the hard drive and motherboard. I've added more ram, a zip drive, a CD burner and a DVD drive. Several months ago I installed Windows XP. Even though I'm thinking of getting another PC, I'll probably keep this one as a second computer.

What I have learned with my friends Emachine, I would recommend NO ONE to get one. They are crap!!!! Try to put a different monitor on those machines and they will start to crap out on you.

Dell is having some pretty sweet deals on their stuff, try one of those out.

I have been building my systems for the past 7 years and will only go that way. Perhaps there is someone around your area that can do that, and build you a system to the way you want it?

I'll admit that I know NOTHING about emachines. But my ex's twin brother does a lot of computer stuff and everything they have in their house is custom built. They have HUGE memory, the best picture stuff (cuz they play games on them and stuff), and all the little bells and whistles they want with nothing that they don't need. He just goes out, buys the parts, and assembles them. If you can find someone to do this for you, I think it's an AWESOME way to go (their computers are the SHIT!!!).

My only experience with Windows PC's is HP and IB< thinkpads. The only time I ever had to call for support was an in warranty bas CPU and customer support was great in 1997. I would consider a Compusa/other closeout model before a weak brand.
You can get a 2.5 ($670)-2.8 GHZ machine for less than $800 with full warrantee.

Emachines aren't the worst out there. They are great for home users, the embedded vidcards tend to be shit but what can ya do? They also tend to be upgradable only so much.

Myself, i prefer custom built machines (you still get warrantees from the manufacturers of the hardware), but then i don't really need tech support. One of the best deals you get with those prepackaged machines is the tacked on phone support for when it fucks up and you need a techie to help you get it back.

Final tally: Great for home users who only have so much knowledge of hardware and software, but you won't catch me buying one. I can put one together for only a little bit more.

I bought an emachine about 6 months ago and love it so far. I bought based on a review, and it gave a great analogy. Emachines are basically the hyundai of computers, meaning they used to be pieces of shit but in the last couple of years have become a respectable/reliable computer for the no-frills users. I bought mine for $700 bucks (i already had the monitor), and it had the best athlon processor (at the time), 512 megs of sd-ram, a 160 gig hard drive, and a dvd-burner, USB 2.0 ports, and ports on the front for USB 2.0 and complact flash cards. Works great for surfing the net, word-processing, ripping and burning cds/dvds. Like I said, I think its a great computer for the average user. Probably wouldnt want it for games or intense media usage, but it works fine for me.

I also have an EMachines and was told that they are basically the generic version of HP and I think my system ran me about $700 cheaper than the HP I was looking at. All my accessories are HP and I have had zero compatibility problems to date. I need to upgrade and/or add space myself since I have added a ton of music and children's learning games in the past 6 months.

I'm an ex Amiga guy, so I'm used to tweaking computers all the time. I haven't had anything but custom built computers for the last fifteen years with the exception of my laptop. The main concern I have with E-Machines is that there is a reason they are so cheap. It's the old addage that you get what you pay for. E-Machines are remnants of the computer building concept that was abandoned several years ago when so many customers complained. The problem is that all the parts are non-standard or generic copy-cats of the standard equipment. Then what they do is take that technology and burn it all on to one big motherboard. The problem is that if your graphic card (which isn't a card, it's just a chip on the mother board) goes kaput, it can take down a myriad of other systems with it so now what would have been a $40 replacement in any other computer is now a full system replacement in an E-Machine. All the computer companies years ago did this to cut costs, Compaq being the worst because they often used proprietary parts that were 5X the price of anyone else when you wanted a replacement. Once enough customers started complaining about this, they all mostly went back to the original method of building computers on cards. I'm not a big fan of Dell, but at least when you buy one of their computers, you get your graphic card ON A CARD, your sound card the same way. It's a much better way to go for the long run. My advice to you is go to a place like PC Club (if you have one near you) and have them cutom build a computer for you. You won't get all the stupid software you'll never use, you'll get a much better quality computer, and you'll probably pay the same price that you would for that E-Machines computer. Best of all, if any one componenet goes wrong, it's easier to fix and cheaper to replace.

TigerDirect is a rip-off house. Check it out here:

If you must have an eMachine, get it at a BestBuy. At least there you can return it if/when you have a problem.

My husband sells electronics and had you asked him a couple years ago he would have said HELL NO. But they have gotten a lot better than they were and for basic internet/pc usage it's fine. No gaming or anything like that as mentioned in prior posts.

I think everyone here is right, in their own way..

E-Machines are great for what they are supposed to be- a cheap, disposable, light duty PC for mainly websurfing and doing basic computer operations.

The problem is when an E-Machine owner decides their needs grow and want to start doing more involved things with more taxing software. Upgrading them can be difficult, they are not very well made and are meant to be basically workstations and not full-blown, expandable and easily serviceable PC's.

Custom built PC's are always a better solution, and if you have a local computer geek that can build one, you can usually get a MUCH better PC that is truly upgradeable with better quality parts just by having it custom built. NewEgg.com is the best site for buying cheap parts that you can hand pick and match for a system to fit most any budget. They aren't the absolute cheapest, but they are pretty competitive and have customer service and quality second to none.

So my best advice is to find a local computer geek, grab a credit card and start filling a shopping cart at NewEgg.com. You should be able to build a really nice full system with all the trimming for well under $1000, then just have your geek buddy come over with a screwdriver and assemble the thing for you. This system will not have any limitations like an E-Machine and be very easily serviceable.
It doesn't matter if you're somebody in this world, it rather matters you mean the whole world to somebody.

I think for future upgrading a Compaq is a good buy. It has plenty of room and (at least in my case) it's fairly easy to access the inside of the case.
