Default THE DAVINCI CODE- Discussion.

We are all looking for the book for the plane or the beach. Sorry I haven't been around lately. Went to the college world series and had a blast. Ate some great food. Now back to work.

I am posting this more for those who pursue intellectual insight and a review of the Davinci Code than I am for the discussion flaring up in the Christian Stripper thread. So, if you have comments on religion, could you stick them in the other thread ... or somewhere else. hehe.

This is more for an historical perspective on the book and the comments of the book by the various churches.

I have read the book and it is a great read. I have to go back and get the first book Angels and Demons and read it as it is the first in a trilogy.

    Anyway,

    links.

Looking forward to hearing your comments on the book.

    Sitri -
This book comes highly recommended. I try to read my fair share, however lately (this past year), reading typically involves opening a book 5 minutes before I fall asleep and finding myself 3 hours later with black text embedded in my cheek...

Despite my typical reading style, I finished this one in 2 days, easily. It's one of those rare books you come across that you find hard to put down.

Unfortunately, I can't be too intellectual on this topic because I have no background in religious history, or religion for that matter.

Did want to add that although I'm not religious, and have a relatively insignificant interest in religion, this book was fantastic. For those of you who are considering your next read, definitely consider Divinci Code (edit: just read this over... I sound like a friggin' commercial ). It's an interesting and different perspective on Christ, the Catholic Church and the relationship of Mary Magdalene (who I hadn't too much knowledge of prior to reading this book).

great book. read it in 3 days while on vactaion. read angels and demons(which is longer) in one day. if you haven't read either start with angels n demons as its the first one. you dont need to have read it to follow davinci, but theres two or three minor references to angels in davinci.

i have nothing really to add, just read it and enjoy it.

Thanks for the endorsement Sander8son. I will pick Angels and Demons up on the way home.

Also, I wonder what the Duke Divinity School will start thinking when they analyze their web traffic and see 5000 hits from Stripperweb referrals?

For some info on Mary M.

    Interesting read.

And for some other Non-Canonical biblical texts (I eat this stuff up)

    And here's another one...

None of those made it in when the council of Nicae (Sic?) met in the late third century to decide the christian canon, but they are an interesting read. Just remember that the First and second books of Adam and eve were meant as a poem, rather than as anything that anyone believed actually happened (Rather like a truncated Oddessy).

I add these because they were researched, among other sources both canonical and noncanonical and even nonreligious all together, for the Davinci code.

Anyway, back to the davinci code (so i don't go off topic all the way), Ron Howard (Opie) is directing the Davinci code as a flick. They are looking at either Russel Crowe or Tom Hanks as langdon. If Apollo 13 is any indication, it should be a good movie (but then Howard also directed Willow, so nothing is certain).

Actually i reccomend reading Angels and Demons first, it's not totally nesseccary, but since Angels and Demons is a good book in it's own right it should be allowed to stand along. The reason why i say this is because Davinci Code is so head and shoulders superior that reading Angels and Demons after Davinci Code might be a bit of a let-down, and that would be a shame, because the first is a very good book.

I read Da Vinci Code first and then Angels and Demons, and I actually like A & D as much or more. They were both great!!! The chapters are so short, it is a perfect read for those that only have small blocks of time to read.

It was funny, as soon as I bought it, our DJ had bought it and was reading it too. Then we both read A & D. Most of the dancers thought it strange that we would sit back stage and discuss church history and such, as neither of us are religious.

Hey, Mad Cap, just noticed your signature, reading Stardust by Neil Gaiman. Is it a kids book or adult book? The only thing I have read by him is Coraline, which is a kids book, but very good. I am interested in reading more of his stuff because he is friends with my favorite author, whom I am totally obsessed with, Daniel Handler, a.k.a. Lemony Snicket.

    Sorry to be off- topic.

Um, never mind. I liked the plot. I liked it enough to pick up DaVinci Code next.

book one "The Earth Will Shake" is at

An Amazon review states "an elegantly written, richly articulated and sweeping novel more akin to Umberto Eco than Dan Brown (making The Da Vinci Code look like Dr. Seuss).", and I tend to concur.

Book two "The Widow's Son" is the heaviest on conspiracy theory/historical speculation

IMHO book three "Nature's God" is the best of the three books because of its depth of speculation and expansion into other areas such as early Wicca and native American shamanism, but they MUST be read in order to avoid missing a ton of nuances.

I haven't read this book yet, but now I will be sure to.

I did read "Holy Blood, Holy Grail"-- by Michael Baigent, Henry Lincoln, and Richard Leigh, about two years ago, which as far as I can tell has the same basic premise, including the formation of a secret inner organization inside the Knights Templar--the Order of Sion. There were some very strange 'Grand Masters' in the list, some of whom were way wierder than DaVinci.

This reminds me of one of my best friends from college, a preacher's son who was very quiet but very serious about his deep faith. A few years after graduating, he began a private research effort into the origins of Christianity, concentrating on the events around the death of Christ and just after. He was trained very well for this research, at one of the ten best universities in the country.

    He lost his faith.

The single most compelling bit of evidence for the notion that Christ didn't die on the cross was the part about his being taken down after a few hours of crucifixion. This form of execution generally took at least a day, and armed guards were typically stationed at the scene to prevent the executed parties from being prematurely taken down.

Though it could be argued that previous torture a la Mel Gibson, and the spikes being used--instead of the usual ropes--might hasten death, no way would the Romans allowed him to be taken down so quickly. Especially with the primitive means available for determining death in those days.

Thanks Melonie. I will put it on my list for next book. I like a little action with the fiction.
Umberto Eco is waaayyyy to deep for me. I tried Foucault’s Pendulum and got lost. I will share a birthday with him, but not much more.. for now....

Oh, for historical fiction a book I recommend would be The Children of First Man by James Alexander Thom.

REVIEW-A highly imaginative novel that combines an old legend with historical fact to create an epic tale of America starting some 300 years before Columbus arrived. Thom uses a long-discussed legend of Welshmen who traveled to the far-off land of Iarghal (the North American continent) during the twelfth century A.D. Here, despite overwhelming odds, Welsh chieftain Madoc builds a society by interbreeding his people with the local native tribes. The book then skips ahead in 70- to 80-year increments.
Read it 10 years ago and still have it.

I havent read the DaVinci Code yet but I fully intend to. Ive been wanting to get it for months now however I am currently wrapped in another book at the moment. I hate stopping to read a different book when I havent finished the one I started with. I too heard they were making a movie but I forbid myself to go see it until Ive read the book first! Thank you for the recommendation for Angels & Demons! Had no idea that was apart of the DaVinci Code.

The Romans tortured all the unlucky bastards due to be Crucified. Some way worse that Jesus got in that flick. It usually took between 1 and 3 days just for the poor victim to die, much less rot up there...

And with that happy note, on to my other point...

Crucifixion victims were never taken down. The whole point behind Crucifixion was that it was supposed to be shameful, Humiliating, and an example to others. It was basically Rome saying, "Piss us off and this will happen to you." The victim would be pinned up there naked, with his heels used as a sort of seat for his ass. After death, the bodies would just hang there until they either broke apart or were drug down by animals. The Idea of Jesus being taken down from the cross would have been very odd indeed (And would NOT have happened without Pilate's ok, something he wasn't likely to have given lightly). It's not totally out of the question, but it would have been like Jesus winning the lottery.

Hell, they recently found a Crucified guy who was STILL stuck on his cross after the better part of 21 centuries!

OK guys I have been very intrested in reading this book but I'm not sure what it's totally about any help? I read a ton of spiritual/religious books all the time so is it more of a Catholic thing and the start of that orignazation? I do read alot (mostly Stephen King and Dean Koontz; gotta love the horror!), but I do have many good tomes in my collection.
Or is it more of a book aobut ancient religion? Such as "The Hermatic Order of the Golden Dawn"?
    Or the King Solomon's texts?
Or kinda like the book about the true freemasons?
Or kinda like the Knights Templar?
I know a few of you guys have read if not own these books so if you have please let me know how this one compares.
    Thanks,

The Davinci Code is about a buried secret that the Cathilic Church had hidden for 2,000 years. A secret that strikes right at the heart of Christianity.

    It's a good book.

Angels & Demons is about church and antichurch forces battling, with a lot of decent background concerning church history and the repression of science teaching.

(They've learned a little better - I was taught about evolution in my Catholic grade school.)

The battle in the book takes place with lots of contrived dialogue about pro/anti-church views, pro/anti-science views, some bad science, over-the-top emotive renderings, and an overwrought denouement. Still, really, I liked the plot.

I liked "Holy Blood, Holy Grail" a lot, although I didn't follow them in many of their leaps of logic. As simple historical research, it fell a bit short. As interpretive sensational historical research, it was pretty good.

Actually this "buried secret", otherwise known as the Mergovingian heresy, has been addressed by many authors for many years and would indeed attack the very foundation of Christian religions if it were ever proven to be true. It also has political overtones in regard to pre-democratic governments of western europe, and reputedly serves as a cornerstone for the upper echelon of 'shadowy' organizations from the Knights Templar to todays Masonic lodges.

Ok guys after I read this thread Thursday afternoon, I went and got my nails done, then went and got both Angels and Deamons, and DaVinci Code. I rea them both in a day and a half and they are the best. While I wasen't actually expecting fiction; they hold a lot of truths in the pages. It's a good set of starter books for someone who wants to learn more about religious history. After that though you need to read some of the non-fiction books about the subject. But thanks again stripperweb.com!!!!!!!!! You guys directed me to a get set of reads!

I went out and got Angels and Demons. Done in one day. You can't put it down..

If you have any papers that carry Dave Barry this ran today.

    `The DaVinci Code,' cracked

I have written a blockbuster novel. My inspiration was The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown, which has sold 253 trillion copies in hardcover because it's such a compelling page-turner. NOBODY can put this book down:

MOTHER ON BEACH: Help! My child is being attacked by a shark!

LIFEGUARD (looking up from The DaVinci Code: Not now! I just got to page 243, where it turns out that one of the men depicted in ''The Last Supper'' is actually a woman!

MOTHER: I know! Isn't that incredible? And it turns out that she's . . .

SHARK (spitting out the child): Don't give it away! I'm only on page 187!

The key to The DaVinci Code is that it's filled with startling plot twists, and almost every chapter ends with a ''cliffhanger,'' so you have to keep reading to see what will happen. Using this formula, I wrote the following blockbuster novel, titled The Constitution Conundrum. It's fairly short now, but when I get a huge publishing contract, I'll flesh it out to 100,000 words by adding sentences.

CHAPTER ONE: Handsome yet unmarried historian Hugh Heckman stood in the National Archives Building in Washington, D.C., squinting through the bulletproof glass at the U.S. Constitution. Suddenly, he made an amazing discovery.

''My God!'' he said, out loud. ``This is incredible! Soon I will say what it is.''

CHAPTER TWO: ''What is it?'' said a woman Heckman had never seen before who happened to be standing next to him. She was extremely beautiful, but wore glasses as a sign of intelligence.

''My name is Desiree Legume,'' she said.

Heckman felt he could trust her.

''Look at this!'' he said, pointing to the Constitution.

''My God, that's incredible!'' said Desiree. ``It's going to be very surprising when we finally reveal what we're talking about!''

CHAPTER THREE: ''Yes,'' said Hugh, ``incredible as it seems, there are extra words written in the margin of the U.S. Constitution, and nobody ever noticed them until now! They appear to be in some kind of code.''

''Let me look,'' said Desiree. ``In addition to being gorgeous, I am a trained codebreaker. Oh my God!''

''What is it?'' asked Hugh in an excited yet concerned tone of voice. ''The message,'' said Desiree, ``is . . . ''

But just then, the chapter ended.

CHAPTER FOUR: ''It's a fiendishly clever code,'' explained Desiree. 'As you can see, the words say: `White House White House Bo Bite House, Banana Fana Fo Fite House, Fe Fi Mo Mite House, White House.' ''

''Yes,'' said Hugh, frowning in bafflement. ``But what can it possibly mean?''

''If I am correct,'' said Desiree, ``it is referring to . . . the White House!''

''My God!'' said Hugh. ``That's where the president lives! Do you think . . . ''

'&#039o I think what?'' said Desiree.

''I don't know,'' said Hugh. ``But we're about to find out.''

CHAPTER FIVE: Hugh and Desiree crouched in some bushes next to the Oval Office.

''We'd better hurry up and solve this mystery,'' remarked Desiree anxiously. ''It's only a matter of time before somebody notices that the Constitution is missing.'' She had slipped it into her purse at the National Archives while the guard wasn't looking.

''The answer must be here somewhere,'' said Hugh, studying the ancient document, which was brown from age and the fact that he had spilled Diet Peach Snapple on it.

''Wait a minute!'' he said. ``I've got it!''

''What?'' said Desiree, her breasts heaving into view.

    ''The answer!'' said Hugh. ``It's . . .

But just then, shots rang out.

CHAPTER SIX: ''That was close!'' remarked Desiree. ``Fortunately, those shots had nothing to do with the plot of this book.''

''Yes,'' said Hugh. ``Anyway, as I was saying, the answer is to hold the Constitution up so that it is aligned with the White House and the Washington Monument. . . . There, do you see what I mean?''

''My God!'' said Desiree, seeing what he meant. ``It's . . . ''

''Hold it right there,'' said the president of the United States.

CHAPTER SEVEN: '' . . . and so you see,'' concluded the president, ``you two uncovered a shocking and fascinating secret that, if it should ever get out, could change the course of history.''

''Mr. President,'' said Desiree, ``thank you for that riveting and satisfying explanation, which will be fleshed out into much greater detail once there is a publishing contract.''

''Also,'' noted Hugh, ``we may use some beverage other than Snapple, depending on what kind of product-placement deals can be worked out.''

''Good,'' said the president. ``Now can I have the Constitution back?''

They all enjoyed a hearty laugh, for they knew that the movie rights were also available
