    Default moving

Okay, so in maybe 1 or 2 years I want to move out of NYS...preferably somewhere south (I've heard many good things about NC) anyways...Im honestly very inexperienced when it comes to bills and the "reality" of what things cost. (Usually my mom would pay 1/2 for me or something along those lines so I payed some but not all) So anyways...how much do you think would be enough money to pick up and move to another state without having to really worry about most expenses for the first 2-3 months? I would guess maybe around $8,000 or so....what do you all think? I'm assuming that y'all would think of the 'little things' that I might be overlooking...

    thanks in advance

I'd say that you're in the right ballpark, considering that you don't have any established credit in your own name. Here's some guesswork.

Apartment - to move in, first and last month's rent plus security deposit, then second and third month's rent payment. At $600 a month, this would total around $3000

Electric company - this varies a lot but probably a security deposit plus three months worth of electric bills would run around $500

Phone company - similar deal, security deposit plus installation charges plus three months worth of phone bills would run around $400.

Cable TV etc are much easier to work with and will probably not ask for a deposit nor charge you for installation. Three months worth of cable with goodies might run $200.

Of course, you're going to need to equip yourself for living in an apartment - if the apartment is unfurnished you're going to need a stove and fridge and furniture which might chew up another $2,000. A furnished apartment will avoid the need for appliances, but is generally considerably more expensive.

There's also the actual cost of moving, which can vary greatly depending on if you do a one way truck rental yourself versus use a commercial mover. My own last move with a one way truck rental cost about $500 between Ryder and gasoline.

Another $1000 for the "little things", and you're right in the 8 grand window.

I was not aware of the need to provide appliances for an apartment! In my experience, those were always provided (bare minimum stove and refrigerator and usually a dishwasher too! )

My last move with a commerical mover ran about $2,500. Commercial movers charge based on weight and distance.

camryn, what exactly are you planning? To fly to NC with the clothes on your back? Drive with a few things in the car? Tow a trailer or rent a u-haul? Sometimes taking your things (depending what they are and where you are going) can work out to be more expensive.
