Default OPINION: Entertainers Please Read

I work in the Gentlemen's Club Industry, from both the Entertainment side (in the past) to the (current) Management side. You're knowledge and input would help benefit Entertainers by letting people like me make subtle changes where everyone is happy.

I would really LOVE your opinion on:

1) What you would like to see changed, improved, added, etc. in Gentlemen's Clubs. Obviously we would all like to do away with the dreaded house fees, so aside from that 'thorn'... could you give me your thoughts?

2) How do you feel about 'themed' events? What ideas would you like to see happen in a Gentlemen's Club?

3) Thoughts on "Lingerie Night"?

Thank you for your time! Hopefully, if you work in the NYC area, you'll see some improvement!

I would like to see more clubs actually treat their dancers as independent contractors. Usually the case is they claim dancers are I.C's ,but then treat them as employees.

I LOVE theme events. I would like to see the industry go back to more of a "show" rather than a "service"

Lingerie night is ok- a little uncreative but works well enough with customers. But seriously there are so many other themes..... Disco night-- Goth night -- Country Night-- Hawaiian Luau, Asian FantasyNight- just to name a few !

My favorite club did parties like this every few months and it was a blast ! A special theme night is best if done every 8 weeks otherwise it's over played.

Aside from paying us, (great call Leigh) maybe you could talk to the girl that work for you and see what they think. Pull each girl aside and simply ask her. Most of the girls dancing that I have worked with, don't do it forever(ie, make it their career), but a few do. Ask around see what the girls want in a club. Some of the best places I have worked have been the ones where a dancer has managed before.
Maybe you could write special invites to a private party, where the girls pass them out to high rollers at your club, so they would feel more special and they could spent more money there. Or maybe have themed nights where all the girls are dressed in simaliar costumes.
I really don't know your laws up there or anything so I don't know what you guys can do and can't do.

Oh, you could also have an incentive plan, to where the girl who sells the top VIP's could recoup some of her payout. We did that at a club where I used to work and man, the back was always full with girls actually hustling to be top-dawg. Whoever sold the most would get her house money back that night. I'm sure paying that little back to a girl back every night wouldn't kill you. especially if you have over 50+ girls.

I'd have to agree with whomever stated treat us like Independent Contractors instead of employees.

Theme nights are great, but again, don't want to do them except for every 8-10 weeks or so

Lingerie night.. ah, how about Fetish night?

Communication is also something that is non exsistent anymore in the clubs... girls, like me, who only work two or three nights a week, come in after say a week or so, to find out that they have changed something but no one tells anyone- no notices anywhere, we're just expected to have ESP... it gets frustrating. (Combine this with a dancer who might travel)

I think that all in all, the clubs would have a great rapport if the dancers felt that they could talk to management (and I'm not talking the high drama, I'm talking the serious issues, concerns ideas etc) and vice versa. Somehow, communication got lost in the shuffle.

THAT really annoys me as well!!!!!!!!

I think there should be like more ex dancers who are mangers because they know the business from the dancers point of view and all the excuse we will use!

I worked in a club where they didn't have dj's they got this music system thing, sometimes the music got boring, but at least you didn't have to tip the dj! and when any of the girls did a special costume act, they got paid for it!

you know it's hard to say because what one club doesn't have another club will.

For improving a Gentlemen's Club...I've always felt that if you are a customer in a club you should buy at least one private dance (or pay a dancer that amount of money for her company), tip some of the girls, and buy atleast one drink. On the average I would say this is about a $50 investment. Perhaps, to encourage spending customers rather than those "I just came to look" guys, there could be a required prepayment for one private dance with admission (nonrefundable of course). Just a thought...I get tired of those that come in for a free peek and get to stay for a couple of beer sales.
Definately use the theme nights, girls can wear lingerie on any given night, so spice it up a little. A club in my area does a fetish night every couple months and the place is always packed.

All of these suggestions are great. Group medical is my favorite. The club doesn't have to do anything but set up times with a sales man to sign up the dancers and staff, and they take care of their own preimiums but cheaper than an individule can.

Another thought I had was how about dancer training? My training consisted of: "there's the stage, get up there and take all of your clothes off by the end of the second song. The rules are posted in the back, be sure to read them thouroughly."

Maybe arrange "required" dancer training for new hires. Cover things like basic floor and pole moves. How to do nice hair and makeup, where to get costumes in town, music selections, as well as hustling and sales techniques. Also a basic coverage of legal lap dances in your area. I wish that more clubs would at least cover the legalaities with the new dancers. I got in trouble before doing what I understood the rules to be, but was informend that the club had changed since they last posted said rules, and I couldn't do (XYZ) there any more.

Just a thought.

Yes...bringing someone in like DancerWealth to teach the girls in your club how to effectively hustle. It would make your club and girls more money. The biggest problem is that girls think that they have to resort to "extra" tactics to make any sales. Training the girls how to effectively sell their products (without using sexual favors as an incentive) would probably help curb any "extras" going on in the club...just MHO.

How so very true! All the club where I am about to work my arse off for the next week needs is a renovation. Once it has a renovation.. it is easy to "class up" the girls or turn it into a gown club. The reason why it doesn't attract alot of people is because if you had a choice (which you do of 3 clubs on the same small street)... would you choose the club that desparately needs a renovation or a club that seems well maintained ?? Duh.. you'd choose the one that looks well-maintained.

Also.. I would like to say a big HELL YEAH with treating the dancers as INDEPENDANT contractors. We can come and go as we damn well please... we are INDEPENDANT not employees... don't get them mixed up.

Plus the optional training (with incentives of course like discounted door/stage fees for those who take the training compared to those who do not) would do the club well. Train the dancers in make-up, dancing, sales and money management. You don't have to do all this in one go.. do separate smaller sessions.

Also.. offer the dancers something like $400 per week if they fulfill the requirements such as working 3 full shifts each week. Or if dancing on stage is not a requirement (some places I have worked it isn't) give dancers an incentive to get up there and give continual shows.. say.. pay the dancer $5 if this is the 4th time she is up there.. and $5 each time thereafter.

Granted, the stage one will only work if it is a small club same with the $400 per week. Otherwise, if you have a larger club which has 30+ dancers working each night... just offer incentives such as discounted door/stage fees if they work a certain no. of nights or do actual stage shows.

As for theme nights.. great idea if not over done.

Eliminate amateur nights. They only attract the young party crowd who don't spend money on dances.

Focus on promotions and advertising that will attract 35-65 year old guys.

I've always thought that college ID night was ridiculous. They should change it to Senior Citizen night! LOL!

I've always thought that people working the shifts that needed to be covered shouldn't pay tip out, or if they want you to work a double or whatever they shouldn't pay house fees at all. I also think that tipping out a set amount to everyone that works there shouldn't be mandatory. The bouncers obviously deserve our tip out, but a lot of times the djs are rude, arrogant, annoying and don't do that much for us. I think that the house should pay these people more and depend less on the dancers for money. Everyone says that they're helping us out, which is true, but it's a GENTLEMANS CLUB, if we weren't there it wouldn't be open. We're the ones that keep the men there for hours longer than they would if it were just a bar, therefore generating more tips for the bar/hosts/servers. I'm not saying these people don't deserve our money, I just think that when they say we have to tip them out 10.00+ in addition to house fees, percentage of funny money, etc. etc. it can get kind of ridiculous. The club I'm going to start working at does this and I'm not looking forward to it. I think you even have to tip out the valet parking. *sigh*

Also.. I would like to say a big HELL YEAH with treating the dancers as INDEPENDANT contractors. We can come and go as we damn well please... we are INDEPENDANT not employees... don't get them mixed up

This is really the fundamental choice which the dancers and clubowner have to make up front and stick to. From Chaos' point of view as club management, allowing girls to act as true independent contractors involves financial risk to the club itself - risk that there won't be enough dancers on a given night to keep customers happy if girls decide not to show up - risk that when too many girls show up on a given night that some girls may resort to 'illegal' enticements under highly competitive conditions. The tradeoff to the club for accepting this risk is that the club does not have an ongoing 'investment' (i.e. out of pocket costs) in any of the dancers. The tradeoff to the dancers is that they do indeed have independent contractor freedom to come and go as they please (within reason) and that the majority of money they earn remains in their own pocket.

When you start to talk about a club providing benefits i.e. health insurance, 401k, all of a sudden you're asking for the club to make a financial "investment" (i.e. out of pocket costs) in dancers covered under these programs. All of a sudden it matters a great deal how many dancers are allowed to "work" at the club because of the cost of providing these benefits, leading to firm schedules allowing the club to be covered with a minimum number of girls. With the club making financial commitments to contribute to health insurance and 401k programs it also then matters that the club have a sufficient revenue stream to cover these costs, which translates into the club keeping a big piece of dancer earnings to apply towards these costs. And with official records now being created for insurance and 401k's it is also necessary to create a payroll system - which in turn brings with it income tax withholding etc.

Independent Contractor status versus employee status with benefits form very different risk vs. reward equations for both the club and for the dancers. Neither the club nor the dancers should expect to have things "both ways" - although in practice many clubs do try to impose employee attendance controls and employee "commission" splits of dancer earnings without providing any employee type benefits in return.
