Default Body Fat Percentage

We're constantly talking about all our dieting and exercise and how you may weigh in comparision to a time when you weighed less but wore bigger clothes, had more fat/less muscle etc. I was wondering if anyone actually knew their body fat percentage, that's what I tend to go by. Mine's at 15%, which is about 3 or 4% above my norm, but it's a much better way for me to tell.

I haven't checked mine recently but last time I checked (and my eating habits and weight are still the same) I was 30%. In fact, the last time I check was the same time my avi pic to the left was taken.

Last time I checked I was at 22% (thats when I was a littttle thicker than I am now) So I would say 19% or 20% which is still "lean"...

15% is pretty low dont ya think? (for a woman anyway?)

Yes, mine is very low, sometimes it hits as low as 12%, but I have medical problems and conditions that affect it severely.

Pisces: a lot of gyms will do body fat testing for you, and I think possibly even some doctors.

And dont get hung up on this %....its just a number....and it is highly innacurate when done by people in gyms...the onyl real way to do it is with body tissue samples...not somethign most people want to do.

So do not get hung up on the number as its not a very precise measurement anyway.

Just some info for you.

Does this apply to a BMI calculation as well? Two weeks ago at the gym, the trainer told me my BMI was 23, but that if I gained 20 lbs. I'd be considered obese....methinks he's wrong....he got fired before finishing my scheduled sessions....

I think the BMI calculation is a poor indicator of actual composition. Technically, the BMI calculation is a measurement of "body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women".

Here are the established ranges for the index:
Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5-24.9
Overweight = 25-29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

It is strictly based off of both height and weight - does not take into muscle mass (which weighs heavier than fat) or bone composition/density. If I was 5'10" and 180 lbs. (which I'm not - for hypothetical purposes only ) my BMI would be 25.8, which is considered overweight - even if I had 6% body fat. To be considered "underweight", I would have to weigh 128 lbs.

Here's a link if you want to try it out:

BMI is solely a calculation based on height and weight. Body Fat Percentage is done with height, weight, age, plus the measurements of several body parts with forceps.

Right - I think Body Fat percentage test done by a trained professional with the correct tools is a much more accurate representation of your actual composition rather than the BMI calculation.

BMI's are just glorified height/weight charts and are VERY unreliable. Body Fat % done with calipers (sp?) are cheap and easy. However, what few people know, is that, to be accurate, you need it done by a certified professional. In order to become certified, you have to have measured over 1000 people under certain supervision. My nutrition teacher at college was certified and we covered this whole topic in class. The only true way to REALLY know your body fat % is to do an underwater mass test. These are VERY expensive and not widely done. Another more reliable but still expensive (when done correctly) test is one where they hook you up and shock you. A machine measures how fast the electricity moves through your body and can therefore determine what % is water, fat, muscle, etc. Ones that only do the upperbody (hand to hand) are the cheapest and most widely available but are also the least reliable. Try to get one done through the whole body (hand to foot). It's probably the wisest choice in terms of cost vs reliability.

My sister has this same condition, which affects her cycles and is believed to be responsible for her inability to conceive.

If I was 5'10" and 180 lbs. (which I'm not - for hypothetical purposes only ) my BMI would be 25.8, which is considered overweight - even if I had 6% body fat.
My height and weight exactly--and there's no way in hell anyone would consider me overweight. This is why BMI is really a useless measure if you're at all healthy and especially if you're into any weight-bearing exercise at all.

Two cents.

I have been watching my body fat percentage pretty closely, lately. If you have a qualified person testing you, and that person acknowleges that the testing is only acurate to 3% in either direction, you have a good chance at getting close to your real body fat percent.

I have also been to the gym to get a new membership and had the "trainer" test me at 31%. That is clinicly obese for women, and I am 5'7" tall 134 and wear a size 4-6. Give me a break .

I now own a body fat caliper and test myself, then have someone else test me. I come out somewhere between 15-17% right now, and I am training to get down to 10-12% (compition levels of body fat for women), just to see if I can do it, and if it looks okay on me.

I think in this business most of the top money making girls are somewhere between 15-21%. That looks nice and isn't too hard looking and also not to soft looking.

Mine is sitting right now at around 18%-20%, but for my BMI I am overweight. I'm 5'4" and 127lbs. and I wear a size 3 waist. When he told me that I was like WTF?! How in the world can a woman be overweight if she wears a size 3? But then he did the caliper test and said well for this test, your normal and actually a little on the low side. So go figure.
Paris I too am trying to get into "body comp shape" but my BFI would be around 12%-14% for that. I have to make allowances for my breast tissue too and they check that. And since mine are real, it always brings the number up a little.
