Default Thinking about moving out of state

    Hi everybody,

I've been thinking a lot lately about moving to a different state. I don't like to stay in the same place for long, Wisconsin is boring, and there isn't much money to be made here. Plus I have no significant other or children, so it's easier for me to move than it is for a lot of people. I'm still not sure if I'm going to move or not. I have a lot of thinking to do.

I know most apartments require you to put a job down on the application, so I would need to find a job before I get an apartment. Should I get hired at a club first so that I have something to put down on the apartment application, and tell them I can't start right away because I am moving? I'm not sure how to really go about this-I could always look for an apartment first, but then I would have to say to the landlord, "I don't have a job right now, but I'm a dancer and I will have a job in a couple of days." I don't think that would fly with most landlords.

I know I could find a job and stay in a hotel until I am approved for an apartment, but then the problem is what to do with all my stuff(furniture, TV, dishes, clothing, etc.) I could rent a U-Haul, but I don't want to. The idea of driving one of those scares me, and I don't like driving long distances anyway. Should I find a job, stay in a hotel room until I find an apartment, and then once my apartment is ready to move into, tell my job that I need a couple days off to go back to Wisconsin to move my stuff? I'm thinking about hiring a moving company. I know they're expensive, but I think it will be worth it for me. I don't want to drive a U-Haul, and I have no one to help me move the heavy furniture anyway.

I thought about selling all my furniture and ordering all new furniture after I get settled in, but I just bought a new couch, chair, and lamp less than a year ago, and I really don't want to get rid of them.

I hope this post makes sense. I'm having a hard time explaining this, and I've only moved a couple of times in my life, so I don't really know what to do. Plus the last time I moved, I wasn't even dancing yet. I lived with my parents until I found a job, and then I moved out.

For anyone who has moved out of state while dancing, did you find a job first or an apartment first? How did you move all your stuff? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

How far are you thinking of moving? Across the state, across the country, out of the country? It might help in the answers you get here to expand on that. I moved across county myself (also from Wisconsin BTW), packed everything I could in my car and left, anything that was left was fair game for family and/or friends. I moved to someplace I knew people though so finding a place wasn't a problem for me. Good luck whatever you decide.

    Richard_Head,

You were smart to get out of Wisconsin. LOL

If I move, I'm planning on moving to Ohio (about a 7 hour drive from me.) I thought about doing what you did, fitting everything I can in my car and selling the rest or giving it away to friends and family. However, there's no way my furniture will fit in my car, and I really don't want to sell it. It's less than a year old and I'd probably end up taking a loss on it if I sold it.

Any more advice would be appreciated!

If Ohio, then try Dublin right outside of Columbus. Good economy and cheap housing. But be prepared for a 2% payroll tax and a state income tax. Nice People, Grey skys, Big College town, it's like Des Moines, Ia without the shopping. haha.

If Florida, then Tampa. close to sea breezes, no state income tax, decent diversified economy. No Mickey Mouse. Live close to Ybor City.

Miami, you could try Cocoanut Grove , be prepared to drive around the dead bodies and talk about how many times your house was broken into.

Wherever you end up, have fun....

I'm also thinking about moving out of state with my boyfriend so I can find a job dancing., we havent' decided where we want to go yet,all we know right now is that were going to the West Coast someplace. Alabama is not the most fun of places to be and from what i've seen the clubs are not all that hot looking.

Sapphire, a storage unit is a great idea! Silly me, I didn't even think of that. I still have the problem of how the heck I would move my stuff from the storage unit to my apartment, but I could figure something out. I have guy friends who have trucks, maybe I could bribe one of them to help me out.

LOL StripperTips, sure! I'll bring some beer too.

What should I do about getting an apartment once I'm down there (if I do move)? Should I find a job first and stay in a hotel while I look for an apartment, or should I find an apartment first and make up some job for the application? ??? I have friends who could lie for me and say that they're my boss if the landlord calls them. I know, I'm sneaky.

I encourage traveling. I did in my youth, and I don't regret a single move I made. At some point, I got to a place that said "home," and I stuck. And that was at a good age where I still had plenty of business life left to get myself established.

It's a big world out there, full of beauty to see, full of experiences to have. And we only have so much time.

Wow Sapphire, you moved from Maine to Cali? No wonder it cost 2 grand for the moving company! :o I'm just going 7 hours away if I do move, from Wisconsin to Ohio, so I don't think it will cost as much for the moving company. I'm sure it will still be at least a grand though. When you hired the moving company, did they load the truck for you and help you move all the furniture into your apartment, or did you have to do that yourself?

I think I will make up a job so that I can find an apartment right away, since a lot of landlords frown upon dancers anyway. Some landlords think all dancers are irresponsible and we're going to party all night long and not pay the rent. It's really none of their business what my job is as long as I pay the rent on time anyway.

I agree with you, Jay Zeno. I love to travel and I'm the type of person who doesn't like to stay in one place for very long.

As far as the apartment goes, I've been hired through email. Scout out some clubs, make a few phone calls (make sure you're talking to the one who does the hiring) and offer to send a resume, letter from your current management and pictures. You should have a job before you get there, or at least a few firm offers with possible schedules.

I've yet to see an apartment manager whose worry about a job (the specific job or lack thereof) wasn't dismissed by two month's rent, in cash, in advance plus first month and deposit. Call a few up and see if they have openings, and send in your applications. Again, you should arrive to your destination with at least a few waiting for just your cash and signatures.

If you do some homework in advance, then when you get there it's just a matter of driving around for a day or so to determine which club/apartment suits you best and making it final.

    Good luck on your move!

Thanks so much for the info everyone. I'm still undecided if I'm going to move or not, but it's nice to have some research done ahead of time. If I do move, it won't be for at least a couple of months yet. I'll let you know when I decide.

I'm with Lilith as far as renting goes. They won't care about what your actual job is if you tell them that when you're ready to sign the lease you'll also provide them with the deposit and two month's worth of rent. They won't argue with you

What I'd do in your situation is line up a few apartment possibilities .... find one the suits you... sign the lease.. pay the amount you promised and move in. Stay in your current apartment until you have found another one (if at all possible) ??

Once you know what you are moving into.. then you will know what furniture (etc) you can and cannot take with you. Hire a professional moving company (but don't go for the deluxe deal just go with the basics: boxes (you pack them), loading and unloading).

Find the club once you have moved in. You'll have two month's rent covered hence you don't have to rush into finding a club.

I must be used to it...I dont think Ohio's all that bad a place to live. Cincinnati doesnt have shit for strip clubs, Dayton (where I live) has a few nice ones. I imagine the Cleveland area has a bunch although Ive never checked it out.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

Have you considered putting everything in storage, getting a maildrop for your mail near the storage facility, packing 30 days worth of stuff in your car, and going to different states/cities to dance?

By doing it that way you can experiment with different places until you find one that offers the best earnings potential and lifestyle before you commit to moving all your belongings.

Just wondering...why Ohio? I mean for me it's great. I've been in the Cleveland area all my life. Out of towners like to make fun of us so I'm just wondering what the draw here is for you. If you are considering Cleveland PM me. I can tell you pretty much everything you want to know, clubs, other jobs, apartments, good areas, bad areas etc.

Too bad that Madison, Wisconsin has the worst strip club in the US and only has that one strip club. For Madison is a great place to live. I like it here. It's been regularly voted the best city in the US. Just recently by Forbes Magazine.

Then again, I have known a few strippers here in Madison that have lived here and commuted to a strip club elsewhere in the state ... usually Wisconsin Dells. One of the nice things they've said about doing that practically no one in the city where they live then know what they do for a living.

However, I can understand the desire to get away from the old and try something new. But wherever you go, I do suggest you not quickly jump into a lease if you can get by without doing so. Live in a long-term hotel for at least a month or until the newness of the location wears off ... whichever is longer. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fense ... until you're standing in it.

Blondhottie- Ohio and Wisc. are very similar. You are so close to Illinois, why don't you try some of the clubs here. Also there is supposed to be a great club in Wisc. that a friend worked at. Send me a private message and I will give you details. Also can let you know about an industry magazine where you can get info. on the clubs before hand. Am going out of town but will be back 7/27

you can always do good old UHaul. That's how we moved from Cali to Vegas. We packed it all up in a truck, with a trailer on the back for my car. Then hubby drove his car and followed me who was driving the truck. It only cost a couple hundred bucks.
