Nope. But for the past two years, I've gone up to the Sterling Festival in upstate NY. It's small, but local. I like it (even though they do the same stuff every year and it kind of gets stale after the first time). I just LOVE Renaissance stuff. I used to be a huge Shakespeare buff when I was younger. Started in on it when I was in fifth grade--reading it, performing it--I just loved it!

Me too. I just love anything historic, was an huge fan of World/Art history in college.

I like the Ren Fairs because it celebrates the Age of Reason. A lot of exploration and science and art came out of that period. People refused to be ruled by superstition or fear of the unknown - they embraced the unknown and explored even the planets with gadgets like the telescope.
This sets the ren fests apart from the civil war enactments, westerns, and other such festivals.
I just like the outfits! LOL

Me too SC. If only I could afford, I love to buy a chain mail, or peasant girl. I usually braid my hair, make a garland crown, (got many compliments on my homemade creation from fresh flowers/herbs). I don't have a gauze skirt yet, but will try to find a cheapie. I've taken 2 classes in Fashion History...fascinating.

I used to sew corsets and those little pouches they wore on their belts. The Ren faire was pretty big in my hometown. Surprising, since it was a conservative town, and our local chapter couldn't have been more than 100 people, but Howard Amon Park was packed to the gills for three days straight every summer. Biggest draw all summer except for the county fair.

Speaking of which, has anyone heard of the SCA? They're kind of like RenFaire, only.... more. Bigger. Everything. They also cover several centuries.

Another way way alternative festival is Burning Man. There seem to be some burning man festivals popping up here and there, though I think a lot of "normie" people are a bit intimidated by them.

Hmm, know @ least 1 man i'd like to burn...oops. No, I've heard of this somewhere, AZ? Is there a site/info for that one? I'm intrigued.

I went to an SCA meeting once, there i met (i swear to god) some of the biggest dorks i have ever met in my entire life. This is really saying something, considering the fact that i work in the IT field.
Not everyone there was like that, but some were amazingly nerdy.
This is the big one in nevada just north of Reno...Originally Posted by whirlerz link=board=1;threadid=10712;start=msg133094#msg133 094 date=1088967526
