Default I'm scared. Should I quit?

As a college student looking to go into the entertainment industry (Celeb. PR) I am very, very worried that my dancing will somehow get out to the public. I don't do modeling or porn, mostly private parties, but I do also dance at a club frequented by many B, and some A list celebrities. I'm scared that when, in 4-5 years when I'm done with school and go to work at a firm in LA, my clients will find out about my past, and not want me (since my past image goes along with me) to represent them.
Do you think that this is a legitimate fear -- considering the career I want? Does anyone know what or how my future celebrity clients would react to having a publist that has worked as a stripper? Do you think that there is a possibilty that this kind of info could be found out? That I could be reconized? Especially if I dance in LA throughout college?
PLEASE HELP ME. I have to decide if I should stop dancing because of this. I don't want to risk my future, but I also don't want to stop dancing. Do you think that my profession now could affect my reputation in the future?

That is a valid concern, Paige, and I wish I had some solid advice for you. I think that it is possible to keep your dancing career under wraps if with a little effort. Things such as advertising for the club, pictures on the net and such can certainly come back to haunt you in the future, but if you don't do any of these, there is not as great a possibility that you'd be 'found out'. There is also the possibility that having been a stripper in the past won't affect your career as negatively as you think it will.

I think that your fear about your future career is valid - if they found out, it could be a problem. But I also think that you have taken the rights steps to mitigate that possibility. By keeping any "proof" from being a concern, you are left with the outside chance that someone will recognize you - which is a lot harder because most of us just don't look the same on the floor as we do in real life.

One other thing to consider: if at any point, someone wants to do an in-depth background check, your tax statements could cause a problem and be proof of your past jobs. Short of that, I don't see it coming out.
If you can't get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you'd best teach it to dance.

    Hey Paige!

I am in the entertainment industry and dance part-time. When I first moved here, I met a female filmmaker while snowboarding. Her advice to me was to work in the Valley because people live there, but nobody of any importance in the industry goes to the clubs.

If celebs are going to your clubs, I would switch. I live in a nice hood in the west side, yet I commute to a club in kind of a crummy part of the Valley. I have met no one IMPORTANT. ( Ok, Lou Diamond Phillips came into a club where I used to work. But what the fuck has he done since "La Bamba" back in the 80's. He was nice and gave me some good advice. He was interested in another dancer, so he probably won't remember me )

Also, my husband has been invited to pitch his TV pilot to a major network. I absolutley cannot let anyone within our entertainment circle know I dance. If his pilot gets turned into a series, I will probably have to quit. Shit, the club I work at only offers air dances and they are not enclosed!!

However, to outsiders, stripping is stripping unfortunately. I actually lost a printwork gig because I mentiioned that I played a go-go dancer in a feature film. A frickin' high school movie.!!! I think it may be out, it's called "Sleepover". Shit, I was fully dressed and we were not allowed to "dirty dance" on the platforms.

The stupid casting people were from Missouri (sp?). No offense to our mid western dancers but some of the corporate people from there are frigidly conservative.

Anyway, back to the subject, get the hell out of Hollywood or whereever your celeb frequented club is located and hide in the Valley. It's safer

    Hmmm sounds like....

You were doing an undercover expose' to feret out the mafia influence in the sex industry..and keep an eye on any potential homeland security threats. Oh, Plus, reseaching for the part of Demi Moore's daughter in the Sequel ---Striptease II.

The mission was successful, but your identity must be kept secret. You are now under the witness protection program...

Thanks for making the sacrifice for our country.

thanks for all the advice, and I agree with eveyrhting you've all said.. but when celeb cliental comes in that means $$$$$! It sucks that I would have to give up those big spenders..
Also, I'm in the process of starting an agency, devoted to mostly prestigious/celeb. cliental. I am doing this with another dancer, I was thinking that I could still do this if I just stayed as a silent partner. And had her buy me out when I'm done with school. It would be a very upscale agency with prices, well, up there. check out the site.. we still need to get graphics etc. up, but I guess my question is, if people in the entertainment industry, knew that in the past I had been the co-owner of an agency, and that they had hired my strippers before (not me, but my dancers) would that help me make "contacts" when in PR, or would I just be known as the woman who owned a "stripper agency"?

    Paige

PS: Pls. lemme know what you think of the site.. any suggestions?

    Paige,

My husband works with several A list celebs, as he is a stock broker. He and I are planning on doing some business ideas together; such as opening a couple of clubs (nightclubs and maybe one stripclub).

I'm not worried about my job popping up later because first, it's a job - not a career- which is getting me through now. Second, if you keep your class and are professional, anyone in the entertainment industry knows how important it is to be sociable with many different kinds of people, get them to like you, and know how to advertise yourself; everything you would have learned from the club.

Plus, it's quite evident that not just some dumb stripper, but only someone with as true talent and as success driven as yourself, could begin the career you wish to pursue.

Having worked in a stripclub has opened you to honing buisness skills and having a keen sense of what the PUBLIC wants. I don't know how that could "ruin" you if anyone- especially celebs- found out.

Remember, it's all about your presence and attitude!

Take life one day at a time.

Just continue going to school and dancing.

If you have an entrepreneurial mind which you obviously have if you are doing parties and dancing you will always be able to make money.

Any place concerned about your past dancing isn't worth working with anyway.

Just wanted to say good work on your web site. The site and the agency both look very well done and professional! I really don't think that your current profession would be looked down upon when doing celebrity PR. Remember, the celebrities are the ones being scrutinized, not their reps, for the most part. I doubt anyone would really care, if it were to ever be found out, as long as you're good at what you do.

I know someone that is dealing with the exact opposite scenario (previously a semi-celebrity, but now a dancer and doesnt want her former fame/name to be recognized in the club..).

A complete 180 change in your look is a good way to manage this. In her case, a wig and false birthmark on her neck that she applies daily, along with a totally opposite makeup job compared to her 'celebrity' self. This along with complete denial of any photos for websites or the like.

When you're stripping days are over, you can toss the wig (or let the color grow out), throw the marking pencil away, start doing your eye/cheek makeup and foundation the way you're accustomed and back to the 'new' you. Even ex-regulars will be hard pressed to identify you if your face becomes public this way.

If you have any tattoo's, this may not be realistic.. but if you don't, this might be the way to handle this if you wish to continue dancing without worries of it catching up to you some day.
It doesn't matter if you're somebody in this world, it rather matters you mean the whole world to somebody.

I danced with a women in Atlanta who also worked in PR. And, like Polecat suggested, wore a wig because she would have been recognized to easily. We became friends and I had the opportunity to see her without her wig and it was a dramatic difference. I think that this along with Corey's suggestion would work well if it's a big concern. If not, I think that the wig and make-up change should suffice.

best of luck to you and your edeavors, they sound excellent!

Kylie - I feel that you have to make some choices, and you may not be able to have it all. I think the agency thing is perhaps the riskiest endeavor. At least with dancing at a club you can leave your work-life behind. As an agency owner it's not like that. Why not dance and in your free-time start doing a PR internship or free PR work for somebody out there whose talent you believe in, like a band or something. This could pay off down the road. Keep your dancing as discreet as possible, and remember, once you're not a dancer anymore, you can say it is a part of your past. People have various things in their past and various careers in their past as well. That isn't such a big deal. I admire your business sense in what you're doing with the agency, but if you want to separate yourself from the adult entertainment business, I don't think this is the way to go.

Oh, one other thing: I think you are much more likely to be remembered working at a private party where the lights are brighter and you are one of just a few girls, versus at a dark club with a million distractions.

You're worrying way too much over something that first, is unlikely to happen and, second, won't matter one damned bit if you're really good at what you're do in your anticipated second career. Trust me - when you get into the "professional" world, "IT'S THE MONEY, STUPID," as J. Carville would say. If you're good, and can make the firm/company/client money, they could care less what you've done to get there.

I think you should be much less worried about going into the PR biz, as opposed to something like acting (where if you became well known people would actively be searching for dirt on you).

That said, I can definitely understand your fears about being found out. The blonde hair thing is a great idea--when I changed my hair once from brunette to blond, people I had known for years didn't even recognize me at first when I ran into them out in public.

sooo... the conclusion being that while it's not the BEST thing in the world to be known for doing, it's not a career destroyer? I'm going to invest in an $$$ blonde wig, and do the beauty mark. I would use color contacts also, but I have blue eyes, and I really don't want to change them...
Thanks for all the great imput!
