I also work at an upscale club in Atlanta and I do think that race (sadly) does matter. Many clubs in Atlanta are divided into ethnic groups. There are white clubs and black clubs. Many of the white clubs do employ black dancers, but seem careful not to hire more than a select few. But as long as you are well spoken, pretty, and have experience I do not think you will have a problem. And if it takes looking and auditioning at a few clubs before you find a good fit for you so what>!? You don't want to work somewhere where people are too immature and ignorant to see you for you and not a "black" dancer. Good luck!!!

aussie....out of curiousity...and you don't have to answer if you don't want to? are you half black, half white?

When someone asks you what race you are, do you say black?

And from your pictures, I thought you were white with a funky punk style, but now that you say it, I definitely see how you're black too. It's weird how that is.
Yes - my Mum is English and my Dad Afro-Carribean, from Barbados. I am very proud of my English ansestory but I identify as black or mixed race if applicable. (-:
you shouldn't have to just choose one or the other. it's an arguement i have with my mother about my future children. my biologial kids will be german, irish, cherokee (my fiance), black and whatever else i have in me.

and for everyone, i think you should just find your niche no matter what your ethnic background is.

Wel I have to say that you sound fine as far a body build to me, but I think women with meat on their bones is much sexier than stick figures. But I have to disagree with you when you say that most women of color are thicker naturally. We have 2 black dancers at my club and one is a size 3 at 5'7" and the other one is a size 6 at 5'5". Neither one of them are bigger. We alos have around 4 mixed girls there too and they are all on the smaller side. but that just might be this area too. Whatever you decide to do, make sure your heart agrees with it. If you ate doing something that you don't or wouldn't normally do then everyone will see it and you won't make as much. If I have to dance to R&B or rap at my club, I never make as much money on stage, no matter what the crowd is like. But if I dance to my favs(alt, rock, techno, goth, ect...) then I always bank. Even if the crowd is nothing but younger ghetto thugs. People just know when something is you or it isn't.

Isn't it ever so lovely that the original poster has never responded?

hey this is for anakSuNamun69, the one who started this topic, first of all 180 pounds on a 5"5 frame is a lot of weight and any woman black or white is less likely to be hired. Although thre is no need to be skinny, lower body fat is the name of the game for all women. Honestly I'd recommend you consider losing body fat and gaining some muscle tone. As for your race, we all experience problems form time to time but thats no reason to feel like youre going to make less because your black in any business, thats a bunch of bullshit. Just focus on making your curvy shape even better and you'll be just fine. Feel free to PM me for some advice and encouragement.Good Luck!

someone here took the time to honestly tell me that my natural hair (styled in a very short 'sister ceaser' cut) probably wouldn't cut it in this business...it offended me at first...but i thought about it...and...unfortunate for me...it makes sence...since most men prefer long and straight...

forgive me if i offended anyone...
I'm sorry...but, you have got it wrong about the hair. You have to do something that makes you stand out. I have very naturally curly hair (you'd never tell looking at my avatar). If I feel more confident with my hair straight, I wear it straight. If I feel more confident with my hair curly, then I wear it curly. It's not the CUT or style that attracts the men (long/straight, etc) but the confidence that exudes from underneath. Of course, that does go to say that if you BELIEVE that you will make more money with a certain style, then you WILL. But, don't think that you have to make yourself "look like everyone else", because, in doing that, you are taking away a part of yourself. Individuality actually does go a long way in the clubs. Okie??

the black girls at my club arent treated any diferently than anyone else. They make their money and at times even more money than other ethnicities. It all depends on their attitudes and personalities.

tribal like dances???? WTF
I get what she was saying. I once had another dancer suggest that I do an African theme for my stage set since I also do West African Dance and I did also have a few customers who were obsessed with all things African. Yes, it could be interesting, but I can't speak for the original poster. Where I normally dance in the UK, there is little racism. If anything, people are intrigued by many black girls because there aren't too any of us where I live. But I guess it would take a lot of preparation and personality to pull it off in a way that the customers would appreciate. After all, it's an SC, not a Performing Arts Show.

I think instead, if you wanted to play up your ethnicity, you could do it in a more subtle way e.g. wear some tribal jewellery to compliment what you wear. I have many compliments on some of the tribal jewellery I wear though I admit i do it rarely.

To get ideas, I normally watch people such as Erykah Badu and Angie Stone - they wear very trendy tribal wear which match a lot of outfits. Just experiment and relax. I believe it will get you noticed if anything!
