Although pretty gross tasting, it's KILLER on throat pain relief- perform salt water gargles. Mix like 1/8 teaspoon (or more) salt into a small quantity of water, gargle and spit.
I had my tonsils yanked when I was a teen. It was nothing special. I have friends that have had theirs yanked in adulthood and also no big deal by today's medical standards. A little tender for a day or two, and you cant drink any orange juice or higher acidulous drinks for a while, but no big deal at all.
Even without tonsils, you can get strep or other sore throat ailments. Tonsils are usually removed for tonsilitis or other such cases.. not so much for strep.
Try those salt-water gargles.. my doctor had me do them to alleviate strep a time or two and those should help you until you can get on medication/treatment.
Take care and hope you're feeling better soon!
It doesn't matter if you're somebody in this world, it rather matters you mean the whole world to somebody.
I used to get this all of the time.
You do NOT want to have your tonsils removed. In fact, most docs will not remove the tonsils unless you have contracted strep throat MORE than 5 times in one year.
The tonsils are a part of the body's filter system. So, keeping them in place is ideal. Only in "worse case scenarios" will they remove the tonsils.

So this is why you didnt come hang out with us?
If you have strep throat get to your doctor ASAP....its not something you want to let go on for long....i dont know about that ear thing...that never happened to me, but i havent had strep in years.
Its probably not your tonsils unless this is something that has happened frequently.
Hope you feel better....but get your butt to a doctor ASAP.

Lexi, I have this kinda thing every now and then. Drink hot tea... as hot as you can stand. It helps.

When you gargle with salt water, try to use sea salts. They are not as processed and better in aiding the body's healing. Also, drinking hot thera-flu helps.

Mega doses of Ascorbic Acid or Sodium Ascorbate (vitamin C.) Powder is best but tablets will do. The first couple of doses may give you dioreah, but it's not too terrible, not like gastric or anything and you can't over-dose on it. If it were me I'd take 5 grammes, (a heaped teaspoon) every hour and expect it to be improving almost imediatly and probably gone by the next day.
Colloidal Silver if you can find it. Gargle, even snort it. Vitamin C drops up the nose are good too.
I found info here, but you can't cut and paste it.
Oops - almost forgot - I agree with Venusgoddess fully about the tonsils. They are there to protect other parts of your body and an important part of your immune system. If theyre not there in future then your more open to other possible more severe infections elsewhere, (lungs, stomache etc). It's not something that's always obvious to start with, but it has been documented.
Forgot to add...usually the "ear aches" from strep come because the tonsils are swollen and the eusation (sp?) tubes become blocked or backed up, causing a little extra fluid in the ears. It's not comfortable, so the sooner you get rid of the strep, the better off you'll be. Also, don't worry about being around other people (for contagions)...your most contagious moment was the day before you saw the white spots on your tonsils. After the white spots appear, you are no where near as contagious as you were prior.
If you elect to take amox/penicillian; make sure that you take 1 acidophilous pill with each dose. The antibiotics can lead to yeast infection, and the acidophilous will keep that from happening.![]()
I have to be very careful, i have a heart condition and don't want strep. I have gottne it about 7 times in my life. I know when i have it, i look in the mirror and see white puss on the sides of my throat. Also (not saying you do) Mono mimics Strep ALOT, the pain is awful, but mono is viral, and has to run it's course with rest, as it nails the spleen too. Strep is bacterial, and will respond with antibiotics less than 24 hours upon your first pill, but finish them all, strep in known to come right back at times.
Warm salt water gargle does wonders, as does a prescribed numbing drink for the throat to help along with antibiotics.
Also strep is usually on one side of the throat much worse, and comes on quick. Mono, is all over the throat and burns too.
See a doc, for a throat swab.
EDIT: i still have my tonsils, my doctors never wanted to remove them. We DO need them, they help in many ways. Also, you can still get strep without them in your throat. Used to be an "old" method of helping children not get strep throat, now that kinda has changed over the years.

Lexi,
I still have my tonsils and I get strep throat in the summer at least once a year- I have horrible allergies to hay, pollen and cotton- all very common in my area.
My doctor's will not remove my tonsils as they say that it is very hard once you reach adulthood and you actually have more side affects than having it done when you are a child.
When I get the same symptoms as you, I gargle with salt water, and I drink hot hot hot water with lemon juice and honey, I do this for a day or so and if its not better then I go to the doctor and I usually get a prescription.
It sucks and it hurts.
Hope you feel better soon Love!

Just go to the doctor. I had an awful case once and the doctor gave me this pink medicine. I took it, went to sleep for the rest of the day, and the next morning I was perfectly fine like nothing had ever happened. It's worth it to just go and get better.

Funny u mention this A-eyez, I just came down w/it myself recently, due to a Bee-otch drinking off my drink, next day wakin up w/swollen thoat. Myself, I take Kyolic garlic tablets (everyday, tho I been skippin, no good). They are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal. Also, yogurt helps immune system. I agree w/sea salt gargle/Vit. C. Take care, hope u feel better.

MAKE THIS DRINK!
3 table spoons RAW honey
1 small piece of ginger (1 inch)
juice of 3 lemons
1/2 cup ice
1 cup water
BLEND in blender till smooth
Drink this drink as much as possible till healed
ALSO - and this works AMAZING
go out and get some losenges with a lot of ZINC in them. This helps the throat so much.
And take lots of vitamin C. 1 500 mg vitamin every hour. crush it and add it to your drink.
Using this approach you should be able to cure yourself in 1 day ,maybe 2.
Aww, Feel better!

If you are having trouble taking in fluids I'd advise you to go see your family practioner or your ears, nose, throat doctor.
I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

It is hard to tell whether you have strep or your throat is just iratated. However I would advise you to get a strep test ASAp. If strep throat is left untreated for a long period, you can do a lot of damage to yourself and immune system. If it is strep, the Dr. will prescribe an antibiotic. One I find works quick is the Z-pack ( Zithromax). You take 2 pills the first day and take 1 pill the following 3 days. It helps b/c you only take 5 pills instead of a longer antibiotic treatment. Feel better!!!

It's weird...I had this a few months ago. Went to the doc for a throat culture...no strep. Had to have a mono test done, too...negative. It infected one tonsil and then moved to the other the day after I started my meds...Weird.
Hope you feel better soon!!!

Did they test for epstein barr???
I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.
Well, if this is the virus that causes extreme fatigue, then although I was tired, I was not lethargic. I know that there are some "new" viruses and bacterias floating around, so I think it was that. Hmmm...I will keep this in mind for next time, though. Thanks.

Glad you're feeling better Lex

I used to have this problem too. Roughly about every two months I'd get horrible pain in my throat, my tonsils would swell up (they wer naturally about 3 times the size or other peoples'and I wouldn't be able to eat for about 5 days (soup and juices only). Finally my doctor referred me to an ENT (ear, nose, throat) and he took one look at me and decided it would be in my best interst to take them out. (If you have severe sore throats more than 3x a year, they recommend it).
So, I decided to do the surgery, not really worried because I've had oral surgery before and it was no big deal. I waited until I was on winter vacation from school and went for it. It was the shittiest time of my entire life. The first day I slept all day. The second day, the Percocet kicked in and ruined my stomach. I couldn't keep ANYthing down, I was vomitting every hour on the hour, making the pain in my throat a million times worse. My goal was to keep down about 3 tablespoons of water per day. I honestly thought I was going to die. The vomitting went on for about 4 days or so, but I didn't start eating until two weeks after the procedure. It took me a full two months to recover and be able to breathe through my nose and taste again (lost sense of taste). Not to mention the fact when the scabs came off, I started bleeding and I had to go back under to recauterize.
Long story short, I think your body likes to keep the damn things and anybody should really think twice about removing their tonsils.

I've had strep throat four times since easter. SUCKS ASS. Finally figured out that a gf of mine was a carrier and we shared drinks at work most of the time. She got on meds and both of us had been fine. I thought I was going to die though....I hate being sick. I'm going to save Ryan's recipe for the future though!
