    Default Hair Cuts

I'm not sure if this has been discussed before but how often are you supposed to get you hair trimmed? I color and straighten my hair so I always think my hair is in horrible condition but maybe I don't realize it because I see it everyday. But I've heard anywhere from every 3 to 10 weeks. I'm trying to get my hair back into shape and I was just wandering.

    Thanks!

I do mine every 6-8 weeks. 3 is too short, I think.

My hair is super healthy now, and I flat iron it a lot. I just make sure to get the trim in that time span (sometimes more like 8 weeks) and I ALWAYS put leave in conditioner it in.

    Good luck

Lexi is right, the norm is 6 weeks. Look at your ends good, nothing beats a nce trim. I look at my ends in the sun, i don't see split ends, so i don't trim. Dunno, just me i guess.

About every 8 weeks is good, you can get an 1/8 to 1/4 inch cut off. You wont notice any length gone, but the most important thing is deep conditioning treatments. EVERY head of hair needs them. Since your hair is chemically treated and you use a lot of heat, you should be getting a protein treatment at the salon once a month, use olive oil as a hairdressing and some type of heat protectant before you flat iron.

i get my ends trimmed every 5-6 weeks. i dye it semi perm every other month. i only use eupopean products and i deeply condition once a week with "terrax" a product fromn italy. try it. it's the best. i also use MOP, Kertase, Klorane, Biolements. I'm into organic products. My hairdresseer also puts organic masks on my hair and sits me under a dryer for 20 min. and it really softens your hair, i hate it when strippers never cut there hair.

Okay - I'm just full of all kinds of questions this week!

How much does a new and good brush play a factor in healthy hair. I replace my brush frequently but I always wondered if I was just weird or if an old brush can ed up causing more breakage....

Any comments? What's the best type of brush to have? I really like the expensive fancy ones but I always end up using the regular vent brushes because I use so much heating tools on my hair...

I do five weeks... my hair grows fast in certain areas- I swear by a good brush, I do olive oil treatments, very easy- you just put it in your hair like you would a conditioner, and I leave it in for about 30 minutes.

I used to do mayonnaise, but I gag because I hate it and the smell is horrible, but if you can deal with it, that by far is the best- all the natural oils absorb right into your hair...

I don't use cheap products on my hair- EVER- I know that this sounds picky, but this is the one area I do not skimp on. I use TIGI products and I also use Paul Mitchell products (I alternate). My hair has a natural wave to it- not curly enough to wear curly and if dried naturally, I've got hair going every which way, so I straighten with a blowdryer and a flat iron if needed. I swear by leave in conditioners and I take extra care of it.

I had a horrible haircut a few months back (the girl cut my ends too thin) and the result was breakage, I had to cut my hair shorter, but in two months (thanks to those walmart hair pills) and some TLC my hair is now back to where it was before the bad haircut.

This is probably not necessary for you, but just an example of the fact that people's hair DOES vary...

I have to get several inches cut off my hair every 4 weeks, no longer. This does still allow my hair to grow long, it just grows that fast. I do a deep conditioning 2x a week, and NEVER use any heat, color, or chemicals on my hair.

Like I said, this is usually not necessary for most people, but my hair tends to grow faster than most, plus tight curls make it harder for the oils that are produced at your scalp to travel all the way to the ends of your hair.

Thanks everyone - I'll probably go get my hair colored this weekend and get it cut then - which will be about 5 weeks. If I go in there and ask the salon lady if I need a trim should I trust she's being honest or just trying to also get me to pay for a haircut?

8 weeks is fine, just get regular protein treatments to build strength to the cuticle, you'll notice less breakage and hair will be shiner because the cuticle is sealed. As for the olive oil, you could do hot oil treatments before shampooing and put a few drops in your hand and distribute through your hair, dont worry it wont weigh your hair down it will bring your hair back to life and cut down on dry ends. You could do the hot oil once or bi weekly. hope that helps

I told my fiance about the olive oil treatments and he looked at me funny... but he raised a good question - does it matter what kind of olive oil (ie. extra virgin)? I doubt that it does but maybe one is better than another....

No hun. I have been doing hot oil treatments for 16 years! If i am out of Extra virgin Olive oil (because i eat it too) i use any oil i have in my cabinet, sunflower, safflower etc. Always heat it up to warm on dry hair. Our hair does not know the difference in cooking oils. All i know is i LOVE olive oil on my hair!
It's a thicker oil, but does the job.

A quick tip: Put a tad of oil in the palm of your hand along with your shampoo in your hand! Lather, rinse with cool water, condition. Your hair will not be greasy, just soft and sexy!!! My hair today, totally blonde, and very long. I thank my hair care treatments.

    Lotsa luck,

    Pamela

Wow! So much stuff I never knew!

*smacking myself in the head* I only got trims whenever I got my hair colored....sometimes only every other time....that means once every 3 to 6 months! I could never figure out why it wasn't longer. It must be because of all the breakage! Boy do I feel like an idiot!

so you just put some olive oil in with your shampoo, then rinse and condition? I always have a MAJOR problem with my roots being greasy (even though I try to only condition the ends)....will doing this help or hurt? I have to wash my hair at LEAST every other day because it just gets so greasy and nasty!

My hair is super-dry. What leave-in conditioners do you recommend if I want to use a flat-iron?

I try to only flat-iron/curl my hair for work and do single-process color on it (damn gray hairs sneaking up on me!)

I've gone as long as 6 months without a trim, but at that point the breakage is getting pretty bad and my hair just looks bad. I try to go every 3 months now which keeps damage at bay but still maintains the length.

Terax is good stuff, but super-pricey. I like Redken's AllSoft shampoo and conditioner, which have avocado oil, an ingredient that is great for hair. You could also try mashing up a large avocado with a tablespoon of olive oil and leaving the paste in your hair under a shower cap for an hour or two. It looks goofy, but leaves your hair really soft.

Trimming needs vary based upon damage inflicted on hair (ex. double process is more harmful and single process color) and people's hair grows at different rates.

When you see huge split ends and the hair's breaking off, you're way overdue.

Hey Pamela - what about vegetable oil? I don't cook with it so i probably don't want to put it in my hair, but does that have any value for your hair too?
