Default When Irish Eyes Aren't Smiling...

    er: er:
Please help me!! I have the worst sunburn of my entire life! And its from a tanning bed.
I don't tan alot compared to some, but alot more than others, my goal isnt to get dark, only to NOT BURN in the summer and not glow bright white in the dark. I usually go around 3 times a week, around 15 minutes per session in the low pressure beds.
    NOW HERE'S THE MYSTERY:
I only went for 10 minutes yesterday, due to time constrictions. The bulbs are not new, I was not exposed to any additional sun, am not taking medication, used my usual lotion at my usual facility AND it's the same bed I use almost everytime. But yet, I am burned almost to the point of blistering, all over my entire body... AND IT FREAKING HURTS!!
Anyone know why?? I've been tanning for years and never burned at all, so whats the deal? Aaaargggh!

I have had that happen too and I don't know why. Now I pay close attention and if my skin starts to feel tight or burning AT ALL, I get out of there even if the session isn't done. I think coconut oil helps sooth a sun burn and it is good for your skin. Take care.

The best thing I know for a sunburn (tried & tested) is, don't laugh, plain yogurt. Very soothing & healing. The protein in it is good for skin. You can leave it on for a while, & wash it off. I don't think you have to use too much of it at one time. It's been a while since I've been burned. Don't use tanning beds/sun anymore. Just mystic/bottle tan. Aloe is good too, but if you're really sensitive, even that can sting. Test a little bit, always use from plant or pure stuff from health store. Maybe try a little from tester, so your sure it dosen't irritate. If I were you, (i'm also part Irish/English) I'd reconsider the tan bed/sun. We're highly susceptable to skin cancer. Actually, my mom had some things removed a couple yrs. ago. She has never sunned, too fair, but it was from everyday exposure. Hope you feel better, take care.

I've heard Noxema cream is good for sunburns, also, lots of sunscreen companies sell sunburn lotions. Other home remedies are wet tea bags and soaking in cold cold bathwater with ice cubes.
There are some spray-on antiseptics with lidocaine....uh, "Solarcaine" actually...

are you close to your period or ovulation? hormone shifts can make you super sensitive to uv radiation. i can't tan in beds b/c of my birth control because of my body's extreme sensitivity to hormonal changes.

solarcain should take the sting out of the burn, I'm sure.

Girl, I understand. I made a thread about this because the same thing happened to me. I am hispanic and have the tendency to tan very nicely. (But I am light skinned)

Well I did a ten min session once and was like a lobster.
I dont know why it happened either. It does suck.

If you can get to a store, get some aloe vera, or buy those tanning products that say "Cooling gels". You can use them after you tan/burn. They cool your skin, and moisturize.

    Lobsters unite!!!!

    HEY!!! that's not nice, lol

Anyways... to help the tanning situation... I've never burned in my life, but I have heard from many friends that doctors recommend (ready for this?) Preparation H for bad burns. Don't worry, they sell it in a gel form that doesnt smell like ass-cream. (I use it on undereye circles and bags). Good Luck!

Oh yea... DON'T USE ANYTHING THAT HAS MINERAL OIL IN IT!!! The mineral oil breaks down the top layer of skin if it has been exposed to uv rays. (if you used anything with mineral oil in it after a shower or anytime before you went tanning it could be your culprit)

Off the subject but AinNy are you serious about keeping your tan long is the only good thing about being italian. My boyfriend is italian and let me tell you there are a million good things about being italian including the food , he is such a good cook. mmmmmmmmmm .anyways NikkiD I am sorry to hear about your tanning catastrophe I am part Irish too but i am way to fair to even think about the sun but i heard that a little vinegar in your bath water takes out the sting . but i am sure that a store bought remedy wouldn't smell as bad. Hope you feel better.

I don't want to come off as preachy, but - I'm shocked at the number of dancers, and people in general, who continue to tan - be it under the sun or tanning beds. Ladies, there is NO SUCH THING as a "safe" tan. With the quality of self-tanners on the market, and Mystic-tan booths and such, there is no need to expose your skin to sun damage. Take a look at pictures of Brigitte Bardot if you'd like to see a textbook example of what a life of exposure to UVA and UVB rays does to your skin.

I am predominantly English and 1/4 Italian - so I can tan, but I burn first. When I was a little girl nobody used sunblock, so I'd be brown as a nut in the summer. Then as a teenager I began to avoid the sun like the plague - first because I wanted to look pale and goth - then because of vanity and wanting to protect my skin from sun damage. The result is that my skin looks better than that of friends my age or younger. I don't have lines on my forehead, deep laugh lines, or crow's feet. None. I attribute this to staying out of the sun, and wearing SPF 45 every time I do go in the sun.

Longevity in this business, or any other job where your appearance is crucial, depends on looking young. Tanning will not help you achieve that objective. Use self-tanners. Your skin will thank you for it later.

Some medications can make you sensitive to UV rays... if you are taking any meds, or even some herbal-type stuff.. check the label.
I feel your pain- except mine is from white-water rafting and sun.

    hope it fades fast!
