I always tell my mother this. She feeds her three dogs people food. Her chihuahua is about 13 lbs. Maybe even 15. Shes is the fattest chihuahua and I would joke that she looked like a penguin. I feel bad for the dog, and my mother does too but its her fault. The dog can not feed herself. I told her to try and start weening her back to dog food, but my mom can be silly like that, and I agree. It IS a form of neglect. Why do parents with obese kids get into trouble?

I think my mom needs a scare like that. Poor dog is gonna die of a heart attack.
Wow Lexi.. The Chihuahua that we adopted from the shelter was fed only table food from his previous family. He weighed in at a whopping 11 lbs. It took us a long time to break him of that and get on regular dog food, but it was well worth it. Little doggies like that are just not meant to be heavy.

I completely agree with you that it's a form of neglect. Although people may mean well, and want to spoil their doggies with people food, it's just extremely unhealthy for them to have it.

I agree with those who said also that raw food is a NO NO for dogs. Just like we can get sick from it, so can animals. There's worms, salmonella, and other health risks. Please, NEVER give your dogs raw meat.

sorry, didn't mean to give you all a bad idea with the raw meat.I heard it on the radio. Some dog trainer guy i think. He was talking about feeding dogs raw meat and that is was better for them.Makes their stool firmer or something. He was talking about free range stuff.Dogs eat raw meat in the wild don't they?I've also thought that they, dogs, would have cast iron guts too, from eating rotten carcusses,lol....

    Hi Everyone!

Thank you so much for your kind words about Choogie.

She is back to her old sassy self! She still has trouble seeing, but the "eye doctor" vet was the first vet to give her a blood pressure test and found that she had detached retinas due to high blood pressure. She's now on blood pressure meds and her vision has dramatically improved in just 3 days!

As for the ass that made the comment about it just being a dog...he just wants attention and doesn't even get a comment from me!

    Love ya guys!

MissShelby, I'm glad to hear Choogie's doing better! I tried store bought stuff on my dog once....never again! I ALWAYS go through my vet now. I don't care how much it costs--meds are no place to skimp on money--you wouldn't do it to yourself or your loved ones, don't do it to your pets!

Audiense--The raw food diet CAN work wonders. HOWEVER it can only be administered by people who really know what they are doing. Raw Food does not mean "people food". You can't just give your dog "table scraps"--they aren't designed for it. Actually, salmonella, e coli, and other food bourne diseases do not effect dogs the same as humans. Dogs DO have a very different digestive system and can handle raw meats unlike us. However, they can't handle just anything. Their food needs to be properly prepared just like ours. I always get nervous when people mention raw food diets for their pets because the majority of people are misinformed, not because it doesn't work. As long as you stick to a high quality, low fat/sugar food, your pet should be fine.

    Hi Y'all,
The sick thing about all of this Hartz mess is that Choogie didn't even have fleas! I was in a hurry, on the way to take her to my mom's house, who lives by the woods. I wanted to make sure she didn't get fleas there. I normally use the stuff from the vet!

My dog only gets holistic remedies. So far they work just fine and we've had no problems. Plus she doesn't even know she's taking it. We just slip it in her food (wet not crunchy) and don't have to worry about her not getting the full dose.
No offense to you but holisic healing in animlas is a crock and is inhumane. My uncles dog had cancer and he only took it to the holistic doctor for 6 months. Within this six months he got worse and had puss coming from his eye. The holistic doctor said the puss is the cancer coming out of his body and the dog never got any real medicine. Well he finally took it to the real vet and the vet said the dog has been suffering severly for months from not getting any real medicine and 'shockingly' the puss was a an infection. He had to put the dog to sleep right there. The dog was forced to suffer for months because some quack thougnt the cancer would go away with herbs.

Hopefully I can add a little light on this topic as Im familliar with the science behind these things. For those who didn't know, I work with a greyhound adoption and rescue here in Las Vegas (www.greytrescue.org) and one thing I learned years ago was that many of the flea and tick drops and collars can be very bad for some breeds of dogs. With some sighthounds, specifically greyhounds, it can kill them. You wouldn't think this would be the case with a product that's readily available, and you would think that they would have a disclaimer about certain breeds, but no. We're very clear with our adoptors that a flea & tick collar can kill your dog.

The reason is because the chemicals that prevent the parasites from nesting in your dog or cat accumulates and resides in the animal's liver. There it sits as it is processed into the blood stream which, in turn, deters the ticks and fleas. The problem is, some dogs, such as greyhounds, have livers that do not process these chemicals properly and hence it becomes highly toxic causing a variety of medical problems or even death.

Believe it or not, we have actually been having a big tick issue here in Vegas lately and for a while, my wife and I were pulling about 2 or 3 of them off of each of our hounds every week. It was getting pretty gross after a while. We have a really awesome vet here in Vegas and he suggested a medicine called Advantix. It's prescription only, but it is much more effective to prevent fleas and ticks than any of the collars or over the counter drops. The only catch is, it's a little pricey. I think it's $15 - $20 or so a dose and it only lasts about a month. It comes in a tube and you rub it down yoru dog's back. We've been using it on our hounds for about 4 months now and haven't seen one tick on them since. Talk to your vet and see if it's right for your dog. It certainly is a good alternative and I can tell you it works great.

DW,what you and your wife do with the greyhound rescue is admirable. Were these hounds previously bred for the race track? These hounds can live fully normal lives after their racing career is over.I love people that love animals!

All of the dogs we place are retired racing dogs. We work with tracks out of Colorado and Arizona are affiliated with two national greyhound rescue organizations. We work through a pony express style sytem to get the dogs in to Vegas. One of the women in our organization even air-lifts the dogs to new homes in our area on occasion. Her name is Maggie McGurry and evidently she's decended from some sort of Brittish royalty oddly enough. She is a young retired millionaire pilot who used to own her own small airline years ago. Now all she does is fly greyhounds around the country in her private plane. It's an amazing animal rescue system to be honest.

Anyway, of the five tracks we get our greyhounds from, only one of them is really bad on the dogs and it's in Colorado. It's normal to see dogs come off of that track with lots of injuries that haven't been taken care of well and often the dogs have different psychological issues too as a result of mistreatment. The real horror stories we've seen come out of the tracks in Florida and Tijuana, Mexico. I think the last one I heard was the owner of one of the kennels in Tijuana didn't believe in adopting the dogs out and insisted on euthenizing the dogs (often at 4 years old or younger). His meathod of killing the dogs wasn't shooting them in the head like other tracks. His method was starving the dogs to death. His reason when interviewed was, and I quote, "the bullets cost to much." No joke.

So, we get these dogs into new homes and they adapt very quickly. Greyhounds are extremely smart dogs and learn quickly. Most of their early adoptive issues are involved with them dealing with things we take for granted. Mirrored closet doors, sliding glass doors, stairs, television and radios, etc. can all be challenging for the first few weeks. Mostly because the dogs, as adults, have never seen them before and it takes them a little while to figure out what they are. It's kind of a funny learning process to watch actuall. They are as affectionate as they are smart and the best part is when you see your pet greyhound run. One of my three greyhounds, Tyler, was a championship racing dog and was retired at the mandatory retirement age of 5. When we take him to the dog runs, he actually gets other dogs to chase him so he can leave them in his dust. It's hysterical to watch and I'm aways amazed to see my dog run at 45 mph.

DW...we have several families by us who are involved with Greyhound adoptions. We were out walking with our daughter one night and this guy was walking two beautiful greyhounds...and our daughter (who is almost 2) fell in love with them. They were soooo gentle with her and Scorpio--who pretty much doesn't like any dog--actually really liked the greyhounds. We've pretty much decided when we move out of our condo into a house, that we'll get one or two greyhounds to add to the menagerie (2 cats and several fish). I think it would also be better to get these dogs when Makayla is older...right now, they are just like a horse for her and I would hate to have them deal with her trying to ride them all of the time. But, either way...I can't wait!!
