Oh yeah, and I do believe in evolution... the genetic mutation of an organism not due to a need, but rather due to a genetic malfunction in replication during birth or growth. Mutations can come in three different categories:
(a) bad
(b) neutral
(c) good
obviously.
In terms of the evidence of evolution, yes, it is not as apparent in humans, dogs, cats, or other complex organisms during our relatively short life spans. However, what about on the microscopic level (i.e. bacterial, viruses). How often have we heard of bacteria becoming immune to antibiotics, and the need to develop more powerful counter agents? The bacteria didn't evolve out of a need, rather the bacteria with the genetic mutation that allowed them to possess a resistance to the antibiotic will live on and proliferate.

I believe Evolution because i actually read the science.
But most importantly.....
Check those links out.

It's great the animals continue to evolve. It's too bad that man hasn't . Oh wait, I feel the wings sprouting off my back as I speak. That is my picture in the Avatar.
Not a lot of time to debate, but I think we did this topic recently. We continue to argue in terms of physical body to discuss creationism or evolution. But there is only one thing that we are worried about and that is our Soul. That is 21 grams of something. See below.
Again, I have seen no evidence that Souls evolve from amino acids to single cell souls, to photosynthesizing souls, to .......(wo)man soul.
It all depends on if you believe you have a soul or not. If you believe you do, than you believe in a higher being. If you don't, then you can do it like they do it on the Discovery Channel..
Religion is a different issue. To say that you believe in Evolution because you don't like Religion is not logical.
Just my humble opinion.
But, make up your own mind. Here is my recommendation for a site that seems to approach the topic well.
21 Grams. the weight of the soul.
Most of those of a religious bent believe in life everlasting for the faithful, a continuation of the life force that reaches far beyond the limitations of mortal flesh. In such belief systems, death is not an end but a transformation: though people shed their corporeal selves at the moment of demise, that which made them unique beings lives on to rejoin the Creator. We call this intrinsic personness "the soul," an entity described in the dictionary as "The immaterial essence, animating principle, or actuating cause of an individual life."
Yet as much as we believe in the concept of "soul," this life spark remains strictly an article of faith. As central as it is to our perception of ourselves, it can't be seen or heard or smelled or touched or tasted, a state of affairs that leaves some of us uneasy. Without the soul, dead is dead. But if it could be proved to exist, a great deal of anxiety over what happens to us when we die would be vanquished.
Enter Dr. Duncan MacDougall of Haverhill, Massachusetts. The doctor postulated the soul was material and therefore had mass, ergo a measurable drop in the weight of the deceased would be noted at the moment this essence parted ways with the physical remains. The belief that human beings are possessed of souls which depart their bodies after death and that these souls have detectable physical presences were around well before the 20th century, but claims that souls have measurable mass which falls within a specific range of weights can be traced to experiments conducted by Dr. MacDougall in 1907.
Dr. MacDougall, seeking to determine "if the psychic functions continue to exist as a separate individuality or personality after the death of brain and body," constructed a special bed in his office "arranged on a light framework built upon very delicately balanced platform beam scales" sensitive to two-tenths of an ounce. He installed upon this bed a succession of six patients in the end stages of terminal illnesses (four from tuberculosis, one from diabetes, and one from unspecified causes); observed them before, during, and after the process of death; and measured any corresponding changes in weight. He then attempted to eliminate as many physiological explanations for the observed results as he could conceive:
According to the Mayan Calendar, the earth is 16.5 BILLION years old. Also according to the calendar, the earth was uninhabitable back then...only with the crashing of meteors into the earth and the aftershock/effects of that happening was water and "atomosphere" created. Organisms began to live and grow...creating more and more life forms...as time went on life forms "changed" to adapt to the changes in the environment. The life forms that could not change were eradicated (by natural means). Humans have lasted for so long because we have the ability to change with our environment.
This is so much more involved, and I am still learning about it all, but it makes much more sense to me than any of the other theories out there. I, personally, am more willing to believe the Mayans than any other source.![]()

its amazing how advanced some ancient cultures(like the mayans) were....its too bad so much of their advances were lost
You really need to read this book:

It's very scientifc, but absolutely, positively amazing.

Thanks V....ill check it out...i dont read too many books...but stuff like that really intrigues meOriginally Posted by VenusGoddess link=board=1;threadid=11146;start=msg140197#msg140 197 date=1090248940
I believe in creation, because this world did not just happen. BUT, i also support evolution, because we (man) are forever changing things on this planet, and i see not for the better.
I believe in a "supreme" being, whatever that may be. Also i think nature has it's ways of getting back at man for destroying what was created long long ago! i.e. forest disease, etc.
We get what we deserve. I don't go to church, but i pray anyplace, my car, shower etc. That's all it takes for me. And what is the MOST i pray for....Our planet.

Evolution!
Eukaryotic cells (stuff that makes us) originated from prokaryotes (bacterial cells which can live independantly). prokaryotes are the oldest (3.5 billion yrs ago) living organisms found on this earth.
Through membrane infolding and endosymbiosis(<- includes the mitiochandria which evolved from small prokaryotes..think cell within a cell) the Eukaryote was formed.
I think the biggest mystery is how the first organic compounds were formed.
Who the hell knows...this life is one big mystery.
What started the big explosion that eventually formed earth?
Was it the atmosphere and heat which formed the first organic compound?
Is it true that there is only a 2% difference (genetic homology) between us and apes?
Why exactly did Constatine chose Catholicism as the official religion of Rome? Was is his stong belief that Jesus was really the message from God or was it opportunistic because the Catholics were more organized and had bishop representation?
Which country is going to take over as the world leader in the next couple of hundred years.... China or India?
If some scientist finds a way to prove String Theory will our perceptions of reality change?
What the hell is going on with the earth and its constant change in magnetic field?
What the hell I'm i going to eat today?
I got it....mc donalds

Creation, Evolution, nobody brought up the possibility of us being "placed" here?
anyone ever thought we might not be native to this planet and that maybe we "de"evolved (lost our knowledge) and are now "re" evolving?
there are a lot of things, stonehenge, piramids, even glyphs that can only be seen from the air. theres even folk lore thats simular around the world. it just makes me go "hmmmmm"
i believe in a supreme being, and a afterlife. but i think if we think we are alone in the universe then were back in the dark ages beliving the sun revolves around the earth and we are the center of the universe.
just my 2 cents for whats it worth........

That would be from the scientific works of Erich von Daniken, which I believe he penned from his prison cell.Originally Posted by wasfatboy link=board=1;threadid=11146;start=msg140256#msg140 256 date=1090257593
Erich von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods is a work of monumental importance--the first book to introduce the shocking theory that ancient Earth had been visited by aliens. This world-famous bestseller has withstood the test of time, inspiring countless books and films, including the author's own popular sequel, The Eyes of the Sphinx. But here is where it all began--von Daniken's startling theories of our earliest encounters with alien worlds, based upon his lifelong studies of ancient ruins, lost cities, potential spaceports, and a myriad of hard scientific facts that point to extraterrestrial intervention in human history. Most incredible of all, however, is von Daniken's theory that we ourselves are the descendants of these galactic pioneers--and the archeological discoveries that prove it... * An alien astronaut preserved in a pyramid
* Thousand-year-old spaceflight navigation charts
* Computer astronomy from Incan and Egyptian ruins
* A map of the land beneath the ice cap of Antarctica
* A giant spaceport discovered in the Andes
Includes remarkable photos that document mankind's first contact with aliens at the dawn of civilization.
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"
