Default vegetarian with a soy allergy!

I cut down on dairy a while ago, and because Im a vegetarian, my diet would be mainly soy, except sometimes I'll eat vegetarian cheese, and since I've found out Im pregnant Ive been eating natural yoghurt too.
But just the other day I found out Im allergic to soy products!!! I was shocked and wondering what will I eat now!? I know there is rice milk I can have instead of soy milk, but most bread, baking etc all has soy in it! I dont really want to increase my dairy intake but I have to maintain a healthy diet since Im pregnant.

Does anyone else have a problem like this, or know what I can eat to stay healthy?

How did you find out you were allergic to soy? I'm also a vegetarian and i've noticed I sometimes feel qeasy after eating soy fake chicken burgers. I do still eat eggs,I'm not a Vegan but avoid dairy as I just don't like it.

and Ryan, I thought you were anti-meat... that whole article seems to be a huge "eat more meat" campain. even when they said 'aisans eat tofu' they followed it up with 'in fish broth before eating meat'..... wtf?

personally I am not buying it.... I have eaten soy all my life and I dont have the "symptoms" they refer to. and the length seems to me to just be trying to reenforce thier thoughts and not really inform. "tell the people something enough times and they will belive it"....

milk makes me sick though, but I still eat it.....

Any person can have a reaction to any one food. I LOVE soy, and continue to drink this. Soy beans are very good for you. Many many people live on a diet that is mainly made up of a variety of beans, and soy beans are one of them. I also read up on soy, and found the benefits far out weigh harm. Eat in moderation, and yes i agree anyone can be allergic or just sensitive to any food. There is a difference.

If i eat something and feel ill after, i wont eat it again if this has happened to me a few times with that particular food. I hate MEAT and MILK, other than that i do fine. But i pretty much have learned to listen to my body after eating. MY weakness...Dark chocolate, but good for you!

I rarely ate soy products when I was vegetarian / vegan. It's not hard, just a matter of getting used to the change. I agree with Ryan on the soy thing, it's really not good for you. The vegan or vegetarian societys would probably have the info you need.

I have a bad sensitivity to soy and alternate between being a vegetarian and pescatarian (eat fish) so I've had to look for ways to get around soy. It really isn't *that* hard... you just mostly have to avoid the vegetarian convenience products. I alternate almond and rice milk and reintroduced yoghurt (which is easier on the bod than milk if you do dairy). I sub yoghurt for milk in a lot of recipes. Also, if you make Sietan (a meat substitute made from wheat) you can make it with no soy - a lot of the commercially available ones are made with soy.

For bread, the local bakeries often have hydrogenated oil free recipes and taste better anyway. I get mine at Great Harvest which is a small chain. Hydrogenated vegetable oil will prove to be the great bane of your existence as it is in everything: cookies, cakes... etc, and is usually soybean based. If you do have a special occasion, go to the good bakeries and request your cakes or baked goods with real butter and eggs.

Strangely, for variety, I've found a lot of the raw vegan cookbooks have great soy free options to spice up your meal. They don't seem to be big soy proponents. Oh! check out Indian and Middle Eastern cookbooks... lots of vegetarian recipes and no soy. Plus they keep well so you can pack them when you go out.

    Good luck!

I go to a doctor who specialises in natural remedies as well as pharmecutical, and one of the nurses there does allergy tests called Bicon Treatment. I went there expecting to be allergic to dairy and wheat as most of my family is, but turned up being allergic to soy instead. I think I could have handled being allergic to dairy better!

    thanks....

but it doesnt make me that sick, as long as thats not the only thing I eat. and I dont drink milk. I only eat things that contain dairy products. I sometimes eat yogert, but I prefer soygert. I eat things with dairy in them, like tortolini, pesto, certain sobes (although I try to drink more of the ones without dairy), cheese sandwhiches, and occasinally icecream. although I purpously dont buy icecream anymore to have at the house. sometimes my husband does though. and he positivly hates vegi cheese. at least I got him to quit bringing meat into the house, dont think Ill ever get him to quit with the cheese, or the chips for that matter which I also wouldnt eat if he didnt buy.

I would say something about your jumping on me for my little comment on your article... but I can see this turning into some big debate, and I have other things to work on right now....
