    Default Generalizations and dancing experience

Before everyone here got into doing exotic dancing, how much of a background in "legitimate" dance? I have been taking dance lessons since I was a child, and have been on both high school and college dance teams. I don't work clubs (just private parties) so I don't spend too much time around other dancers, but I've had more than a few clients ask if I smoked (which they seemed to percieve as a negative) and I said no, because I have to keep in shape and my steady workout regimen.

From reading through a lot of this, and talking with clients over the past year and a half, I seem to get the feeling there is a different type of background used for people who become club dancers than for party dancers, though thre is so overlap as well. Does anyone agree or disagree?

Absolutely no formal training in dancing here. Before I became an exotic dancer my training and experience were in Respiratory Therapy and Creative Writing.

I've met a lot of dancers in the clubs that have extensive legitimate dance background. I think I've met more that have some dance background than ones that have never danced before.

I may have many faults, but being wrong ain't one of them.

I'd say that dancers with a professional dance background are the minority in clubs and parties.

I wouldn't say that I have an EXTENSIVE background in other dance forms, but before I started stripping I did take a few years of ballet, tap, jazz, and ballroom dancing lessons. I also took part in several of my high school and community theatre shows. It's actually why I started exotic dancing in the first place. I had wanted to do professional ballet, but was told by most of my teachers that my bone structure was too large, poor arches in my feet, etc. So exotic dancing was a way for me to still be able to perform onstage and make good money doing it. The stage, lights, costumes, makeup, these were the things I missed the most so exotic dancing makes me very happy.

Waaaaayyyyy long ago I took all sorts of dance lessons. Then I was a cheerleader in H.S. *robotic dancing* but NONE of it came into play when I started stripping. I'd say that my GYMNASTICS background has helped me out more then anything else. HANDS DOWN!

When I was a pre-teen and throughout some of my teens... I did (in order) ballet, jazz, tap, funk, ballroom, labada. Since then (last year) I took one term in Latin American dancing at a local school here (Rio Rhythmics).

I would also like to do lessons in belly dancing too. Ultimately, i would love to do weekly classes in belly dancing and latin american... as I feel they both will be able to help me out with my dancing.

So.. not an extensive background.. but a background.

I took Ballet, Tap, and Gymnastics when I was younger.

    But that's about it.

I have some legit dance experience. Mostly in Middle and High School. I was in a lot of musicals and got chosen for the dance lines mostly. I was also in marching band, in the percussion section. Not dance but I definitly had to know rhythm. I still unconsciously walk (and dance) with any music I hear.

I took swing lessons a couple years ago. Lots of fun. I would also love to take belly dance lessons.

The only dancing I had before stripping was being a cheerleader for 8 years, but as playboycnterfold mentioned, it was robotic....lol everything was choreographed. (And that didnt come into play with stripping because ya dont go on stage and do toe-touches and cheer.)
I also know how to dance merengue and salsa, but again, that doesnt go with the kind of dancing I do on stage. I know a few girls who can incorporate it into their routines, like a girl I know from my other club, but I cant do it. It looks good on some people.

Anyway, technically, I had no idea how to strip on stage, or shall I say I had no idea how to strip on stage gracefully until I finally did it.

Honey, I was practically BORN dancing! I have lots of childhood dancing and performing expierence. I also was a cheerleader in H.S. I still take dance classes and audition for all types of regular dance jobs to date (I'm too short for most of the big shows here in Vegas). I consider myself a dancer. I like stripping because it keeps me current with performing and in shape. It's also alot more steady than production work.
To me, it's all the same... you get out of it what you put into it.

I took ballet lessons as a kid which has no current influence on my dance style, but it did teach me that I really liked being on stage in front of a live audience. The other thing is some theater stuff -- and THAT definitely is good training for dancing.

(ha! I always wanted to be a baton twirler, Mercedez!)

the only experience i have with dance is behind-the-scenes work (lighting, costumes, etc) for some productions.

None. Drill Team and a cheer leader, that's it.. and I was flexible from doing those things.. but other than that, no dance training.
