I have dark chocolate brown hair and am tempted to lighten it, or do highlights. Any suggestions on drugstore/ beauty supply store highlighting kits? I don't want to fry my hair, but I can't afford a salon visit right now.

hi I have the same yellow-olive skin tone and my hair is naturally dark brown. I've done the highlites before and even bleached my hair blonde ONCE (hurl. I looked so cheap)

I really don't care too much for highlites on me I just don't like the way it looks. So last time I got my hair done my stylist and I opted for low-lights. She knows I like the darker colors (I wanted her to dye my hair black but didn't want to look goth) Anyhow she put in soft black low-lites I think it looks super cool, totally natural, lots of depth and dimension. Something to think about. OR you could opt for the highlite/lowlite combo.

I would find a picture of the hair colour you want, and hit a salon. My roomie just had hers done, dark brown hair with caramel strands all over the head. Looks nice. Kinda sounds like Saphs hair but maybe lighter, since she has no black streaks. The depth is nice. I LOVE a rich brown hair, with multi-coloured strands, i just can't wear it. I look very very white.

I've been thinking about getting low-lights but I don't know anyone who has ever had them. I want low-lights because my hair is naturally medium brown but my eyebrows are black. It looks like I dye my hair lighter or my eyebrows darker but I don't! I'm not sure how it will look but I want to try. Just have to get the courage.

Let me tell you, if you do get a kit, be sure and do a test 1st!!! I bought one, & on the advice of a friend, (fmr beautician) cut a little snip of my hair, dipped in the dye, it turned BLACK. If you can't afford highlights in salon, maybe try a couple around face to "get started". Be honest, say you can't afford a lot now, I did this also, built up visits & my beautcian gave me a great price. I also get regular color done, she helped me pick out a home product to use (on roots) in between visits. Or maybe you could try one of the gradual "wash out" semipermant dyes. No drastic change, but can brighten hair.

Well chicas, I bought a highlighter kit today. I'll let you know if I end up looking like a black alley cat that's been in the sun too long ;p

I don't remember the name of the one I use, I think it's by Clairol (not sure, though). Don't get the one where you have to put the cap on, it's too easy for a beginner to mess up. Get the ones(that are becoming more popular lately) that look like they come with a comb to comb it through your hair. It's so easy to use and you can see exactly where you put the highlights and can control how dramatic they are based on how much you comb through. The comb sort of has a handle like a man's razor with prongs on the end.

How do you touch up the highlights if you are doing it yourself once the roots grow out? I would love to do it myself, but don't know if I could do it.

I would be careful trying to do any kind of highlight or blonde, I would just save your money and go to a salon.
I'm here to make money. NOT make friends, if I make a friend then it's a bonus.

I'd rather be absolutely ridiculous that absolutely boring

Well, my cousin and I did the cap highlighter deal before I saw jenna's post...it turned out allright, too subtle, not as golden as I hoped for. But I'm glad it looks natural.
