    Default New Virus Warning

Passing this one on, because from the looks of it, the attachment might be tempting for some to open it...

Virus Purporting bin Laden Suicide Hits Web

SEATTLE (July 24) - A virus purporting to show images of Osama bin Laden's suicide popped up on the Internet on Friday, designed to entice recipients to open a file that unleashes malicious software code, security experts said.

The virus was attached to a message that was posted on over 30,000 usenet newsgroups and is not being spread via e-mail, said Web security vendor Sophos.

Virus writers are using Osama bin Laden to entice computer users to open infected e-mails.

The U.S. government has been hunting for bin Laden since 2001, holding him responsible for masterminding the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon on Sept. 11, 2001, but he has not yet been found.

Chris Kraft, senior security analyst at Sophos, said the message and virus was designed to lure unsuspecting readers into opening a file, similar to the Anna Kournikova virus that enticed readers to open a file that unleashed malicious software code.

"If you don't know the person or the origin of a message, you shouldn't be opening it," Kraft said.

The fake bin Laden suicide file, when opened, unleashes a program called a Trojan horse that makes it possible for attackers to take over infected personal computers running Microsoft Corp.'s Windows operating system.

Kraft said the virus itself had already appeared on the Internet before, but the virus writer had apparently repackaged it by saying it contained bin Laden's suicide photos.

Previous versions of the virus have included subject lines such as "Bin Laden toilette paper!!", "Sadam Hussein & BinLaden IN LOVE" or "Is Osama Bin Laden BAD-LOVED?"

Some infected e-mails have contained an attachment titled "BINLADEN_BRASIL.EXE."

    Holy Penicillin Batman!
I suspect most of you already know all this - but I'm going to post it, anyway.
    HOW TO PROTECT YOUR COMPUTER
    1. Don't turn it on. (okay, that one's a joke...albeit effective.)
    2. Don't EVER open emails with attachments from anyone you do not know. Ever. EVER!
    3. Get a virus scanning program, and set it up to automatically download the updates.
    4. Ever get those emails from friends that say "There's a virus...search for blah blah blah file and delte it!" DO NOT DO THIS. There are several of these bullshit virus emails that float around, and for some reason people believe them...then forward them to a friend. You believe it because a friend sent it. They are crap, and you'll end up deleting something from your system that is supposed to be there.
    5. If you do not already have a virus scanner, then after getting one you should immediately have it scan your entire hard drive. You can also set up your computer to scan the entire drive on a regular basis. I have mine run in the middle of the night twice a week.

LOL ah yes.. One of the most famous ones is the Jdbgmgr where they tell you to do a search for a file with a bear icon. Then they tell you to delete it because it's a virus. It's a pretty vital file, so I know quite a few who fell for it.. lol Doh!
