Default Home semi-permanent color

I know there must be a thread on this somewhere, but I thought I would try to get info anyway.

I love my hair dresser. She is not the cheapest, but she knows my hair like no one ever has and I get the most compliments after my visits to her.

For color, she uses partial highlights that fall into the dark blonde/reddish catagory. Then she puts a temporary Redken product over it that makes my hair a dark brunette w/ really subtle highlights. She mixes several colors so I am not sure which ones and she does it slightly different every time.

I am not interested in doing my own highlights, but if there are dark haired dancers out there that know of temporary washes w/ color that condition and shine, that would be so great!

I have only ever used henna and once when I was up for a part in a Latin touring company and had really blond highlights. One of the producers said I would have a better chance of getting cast if my hair was darker, so I would look more typically "Latin."

Well, bought a dark brown mousse, and all my blond highlights turned mossy green and I didn't get the part :'(

So, you can see how reluctant I am to try home coloring

Feedback would be great.

Cheers,

Corey

Awww, green hair, how awful! What is your natural hair color and texture?
My recommended home semi-permanent brands are Garnier Nutrisse (the Fruit Oil one) and Clairol/ Revlon brand products. (<Old School but well-formulated.)
I just highlighted my hair at home and lucked out big time- if the lift had gone further than it did, I would have tasty ORANGE highlights instead of copper-gold lights on dark brown hair. When altering hair at home, you need to give the dye/highlighting a couple days to see the finished product (Additional tint/color washes out, your natural hair oils can affect the appearance of the color, sun can lighten it up....etc....) I din't see all my highlights until 3 days after.
Best wishes!

I do not recommend coloring your hair alone. A few years ago, I decided that I wanted some beautiful "gold" highlights during the winter time (I am a natural redhead, and in the summer, I get these naturally with the sun).. so I picked up the darkest blonde I could find to "streak" my hair.. what I ended up with and what I wanted to end up with were two completely different things... I ended up spending $80 to my hairstylist to fix the problem and get the crap out of my hair and to put in the highlights that I wanted, plus, my hair was dry in the areas that I had messed with.

At home color kits may be cheaper, but there is a reason why...

I suggest just going to your stylist.

Thanks for the suggestions. I didn't want to highlight my hair, just put a temp rinse color over what has slightly faded.

I see my hair-dresser colorist about every three weeks for the temp color. It's like a real sheer color wash. Sort of imagine a conditioning water color. I have medium brown hair which I have tinted a darker color of brunette. I pay about $50-$60 per visit plus tip.

So, if anyone knows of a product like this, you let me know.

Cheers,

Corey

If you have a sally beauty store near you, look for a no lift color. Don't use stronger than a 10 volume developer. Pay attention to the base color and stay away from ash colors. They will make your highlights green. sally beauty also has a website - sallybeauty.com

I've done the semi-permanent make your hair a little darker routine...
DON'T DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO IT
for the LOVE OF GOD, DON'T DO IT PLEASE.

My hair looked great, for a week. I eventually had to cut out the remnants of the colour it was a huge mess...this is just "semi-permanent, gentle, deep conditioning" at home box colour. My hair turned green because I have "ash" type colour in my hair...if you have any remnants of "ash" in your hair and 9 times out of 10 you do....your hair will turn a certain type of green. Just get semi-permanent put in at your stylist's! Tell her what you want and stick with it that way...NO GOOD can come of at home products.

Try Fanci-full. It's old-lady hair dye, in a tall grey bottle with a pink lid. It's usually on the bottom shelf of the hairdye section in drugstores.
I use the chocolate kiss color in the summer when the sun starts to turn my hair red...it's not the easiest to apply, but once you learn it's pretty quick, and it lasts only until your next shampoo. No peroxide or ammonia, no damage.

There are also little packages called 'hint 'o tint', in single-serving sizes hanging hapazardly in most drugstores...they have a dark brown color, it works quite well and adds shine. Also lasts only one shampoo.

Feature costumes for sale!
