    Default "AMISH IN THE CITY".

Did any one watch this last Wed.?When the Amish girl went to the beach for the very first time and cried,It kind of made me cry also and think how much we take things for granted. The show comes on Wed.,UPN at 8PM pacific time,I think.

For those who don't know the show's premise,it's five Amish twenty somethings going to live in L.A. with six "regular" twenty somethings.

I didn't see it and I don't think I want to. I think it's kinda disrepectful of the network to expliot their religion like that, even if the participants are willing. They really don't know what they're getting themselves in to. That's like taking a devout catholic and making them join a satanic cult all for the sake of television ratings. To me that's wrong. What has this world come to?!?!?!

Personally, I hate TV. Read a book instead.......

I think i'm with the Hottie on this one. it seems pretty careless to expose these kids to such immoral situations (well, immoral according to the religion they were raised in, that is).

But then again, surely UPN isn't holding a gun to these kids' heads making them do it... and they should be old enough to call their own shots...

I think I would watch it though, just out of morbid curiosity. If only UPN came in on DirectTV. :

Wait... Are any of the Amish peeps hot?

Actually, although I've never seen it, the program probably follows Amish teenagers when they turn 16. When they turn 16 teenagers are free to explore the outside "modern" society, independent of the rules and restrictions of their religion - free to drink, do drugs, have sex, drive cars, etc. This time period is called "rumspringa", Dutch word for "running around". All Amish teenagers partake in this "event".

The purpose is to truly determine if the Amish way of life is something they can follow, without question. If they commit after the rumspringa, they are committed for life, only to be shunned by the community if they later decide to have a moment of weakness (they are treated literally as if they were dead by friends, family, etc.).

According to the movie "Devil's Playground" - which is a fairly good documentary on the rumspringa - "85 to 90 percent of the teens do decide to return to the Amish ways and join the church".

So again, I'm not sure what this UPN show is like, but it sounds like a documentary.... Nonetheless, I also do agree - sounds like exploitation.

With the exception of Mose, they're all hot. Mose is still high on my list of people I'd invite to dinner, though.

I met an Amish girl when I stayed a summer in Michigan with my mom, and my mother was engaged to a man whose family is Mennonite. The Amish religion is quite complex, but what it boils down to is that they don't view this as in any way wrong. Essentially, these young people are not Amish any more than you or I are. They are the children of Amish, but they aren't Amish themselves.

The Amish believe that one cannot accept God or religion until one has reached the age of accountability (a decision made when you didn't know any better is not a real decision). Young people go through a period called "Rammspringe" or "Rummsprenge" (can't spell it, it's a German dialect) during which they are allowed and even encouraged to do many things which are not allowed in their ordnung (sect/denomination/congregation); things such as makeup and fancy hair and modern clothes and all sorts of otherwise not allowed stuff. Once they have had a taste of the world, as well as a taste of their Amish heritage, they can then freely choose which life they want.

None of this stuff is considered a sin until they have taken the baptism to become Amish. Once they reject worldly things in favor of the Amish life, they can never go back to worldly things. But until they reject it, they are free to do basically as they please. Most go hog-wild for a year or so and then become Amish without many misgivings. Some become Mennonite instead, which is a little less restrictive. Only those who have become fully Amish after baptism and vows are subject to punishment if they then do something not allowed.

I liked the show, though I wanted to slap most of those spoiled city kids. I think the producers are skewing the footage to make it seem more hostile than it is, but that guy from Boston is just an arse end.

No, but I've seen "Witness". I learned all I know about the Amish and Mennonites from Ed's parents and Ruth. I met her during her hog-wild period and, let me tell you, that girl was a freak. Loads of fun. She's making some Amish farmboy very happy right now.

I never did get all her family straight, though. By god, it seems like every other Amish woman is named Esther or Ruth, and the whole lot of them are surnamed Yoder. She had a brother and sister doing the rammspringe thing at the same time, and I doubt her mother slept a wink.

I'm envious of Mennonite and Amish women sometimes. I could be a happy farmwife, but my life won't allow that kind of choice. I saw one of the "Amish in the City" guys on "Regis and Kelly". A righteous man is so hot!
